Blond hair dye that doesn't lighten, just covers grey??

I have blond highlights in my brown hair, which are growing out and being replaced with white streaks at the roots. I would like to dye the roots blond to hopefully match (or as near as dammit) the highlights. All the permanent blond dyes I've seen in the shops, have bleach in and will lighten my brown hair. Surely there's such a thing as blond dye that doesn't bleach? Surely those older ladies who have blond hair who are covering their grey, aren't bleaching their hair by putting blond dye on it? Can anyone please help?

Even more confused now, bought a light blond semi perm thi king that it definitely wouldn't lighten as it only lasts up to 24 washes but noticed that the packet shows brown hair becoming blond after using it, how can that be??

All permanent and semi dyes have peroxide to fix the dye which in turn lightens the hair. Grey hair is even more resistant to dye and usually needs higher percentage of peroxide to fix. What you are asking is very tricky to DIY.

I tried daniel field Monica but it didn't cover the grey at all I'm afraid.
Oh dear, sounds like this is all impossible. My colour is way too warm as well. I've only ever had highlights in the past 2 years and I cannot believe how hard it is to get the colour right. Hairdressers just seem to shake their heads at me when I talk about ash cool colours yet I know loads of people who have had successful dye jobs for years, including cool tones. I don't know where I'm going wrong but I am despairing a bit now. Drama queen I know.

I don't normally dye my blonde hair and it's becoming naturally lighter as the years go by, but the odd time I've tried a semi-permanent colour on it the results have always been darker than my own hair. Too yellowy as well, which is why I'm not much of a fan of dyes.

Like me, you'd probably be best asking a professional colourist. I'm too tightfisted and broke to go down that route. I think my hair is in better condition than that of my dye-happy contemporaries, which is a small consolation.

Well that's the problem with dyeing hair- it warms up as it fades because of the brassy colour the peroxide has turned the hair under the veneer of colour.

One thing that might work would be to go to a hairdressers and get them to tone your highlights silver and grow in your natural colour. Use 'touch of silver' shampoo to keep the yellow from showing a couple of times a week.

Personally, I love silver, salt and pepper etc hair.

Any dye that lasts "up to 24 washes" has peroxide in. The true semis are those that say "up to 8 washes", they just deposit color onto your hair without opening the hair shaft to put color inside it (this is what peroxide does)
I'm naturally light blonde, and I sometimes use this kind of dye to change my color a bit. There aren't very many of these true semis that do good blonde shades though.
There is a product I've tried called Wella Colour Fresh. It's a semi that lasts around 8 washes, and it might be worth a try (it won't damage your hair anyway!)
You can get it from various places online (and I suppose in some hairdressers too)
I haven't actually bought it from Look Fantastic myself, but here's a link that shows some of the colors you can get!

There's also a cheap one from Superdrug, but I don't know how it would work for gray hair, maybe it's not strong enough!

I know what you mean about going grey kissyboo. I read all the threads on here about it and think for so many reasons that it's a fab thing to do and I totally believe that one of the reasons grey hair is perceived as an old lady thing, is because hardly any women in their 30s and 40s let their natural grey hair come through. I want to do it but I just can't. I am a ashamed of myself for saying that but I just can't let myself go grey, I feel too young at 33 even though I know what I have written above.
