Where am I going wrong with hold ups?

Now the weather is warming I want to ditch the black tights for work and go for tan. I prefer holds up to tights in the summer however I find once I have worn a pair and washed them once they often no-longer stay up!

Where am I going wrong? The pair I put on this morning had just come out the wash- but only one leg stayed up while the other rolled down as soon as I moved!

ime any hint of fabric conditioner from the laundry, or moisturiser/talc/skin product then you are stuffed for keeping them up!

If you dampen the silicone grip strip that'll sometime restick them.

MadameJulienBaptiste · 15/04/2015 21:40

Are you using fabric conditioner as this can stop the top being grippy.
body lotion on the legs also stops the grip.
I hate holdups and have already started putting the stocking cream on after my shower.

Snowberry86 · 15/04/2015 21:49

I don't use fabric conditioner, other than what might be in my wash liquid already.

Would the tumble drier affect anything?

Yes, the tumble dryer would probably cause the hold up strips to degrade. Stockings dry really quickly, why do you tumble dry them?

ImpatientGriselda2 · 15/04/2015 22:33

Long-time holdups wearer here: yes, no body lotion, and dampen to restick. If out of the house all day I also sometimes dampened the sticky bit through the day, with wet hands, especially before heading out so I could be confident they wouldn't slide down, e.g. on public transport on the way home from work.

Might be a slight faff, but I got used to it as I can't tolerate tights.

I've never worn holdups in weather that was really hot and sticky though, where sweat itself might make them slide. Luckily I've never worked in an office that was formal enough to insist on hosiery in the summer.

Also make sure they're not too small.

I've always handwashed holdups (along with bras) - got some M&S opaque pairs over 5 years old and still going strong, probably thanks to this. I'd have thought tumble drying would destroy the sticky stuff very quickly.

not too big, that should have been

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 15/04/2015 22:44

Gosh, I've never posted in S&B before... Being neither stylish not beautiful myself! However, hold ups I do know about because I can't bear tights.

For me, M&S ones are the only ones that stay up (I have been known to have to nip behind a bush to whip other brands off Shock). I never ever put them in the washing machine. I always just rinse them out in the sink by hand and it seems to preserve them pretty well.

Muckymoo71 · 15/04/2015 23:02

Try some anti bac hand gel on the sticky bits, worked for me before, would never machine wash them, hand wash them and line dry. I have a roll on too for hold ups staying up, it's like a glue but dancers use it to keep bits stay in place!

ImpatientGriselda2 · 16/04/2015 01:56

pasbeaucoup Ha - I know what you mean! Pushing collapsing holdups down inside boots has been one of my favourite solutions to that.

The hand gel and dancers' glue - which I wish I'd known about before, thank you muckymoo71 - are a more genteel and recommendable alternative to spitting on one's hand to restick them whilst behind the proverbial bush or in an empty room, which I've done many a time.

All this sounds like hassle, but I tend to find it more amusing than anything.

ImpatientGriselda2 · 16/04/2015 02:32

However...These days there are solutions that weren't in shops back when I started wearing holdups. Haven't tried any of these personally, but if I was planning to wear holdups all day at work, I would.

"Suspender tights" - in some online shops, like UK Tights and Stockings HQ. There are sheer and opaque, but they can be a bit pricey.

And there's a much wider range of suspender belts, especially from vintage and retro sites: better quality, more straps, shorter straps. (A friend has long worn stockings for comfort, but my legs are too short for me to wear the typical long-strapped high street suspender belt without worrying about stocking top visibility in reasonable length skirts. )

lovelinz1 · 17/08/2019 22:54

Well, given the amount of hassle hold ups can cause, I'm happy to know that people haven't given up on them.
Thank you.

delahay · 17/08/2019 22:59

Where can I get the dancers glue for hold ups please?

IcedPurple · 18/08/2019 09:46

It's not you, it's them.

"Hold-ups" (usually they don't) are crap.

lovelinz1 · 18/08/2019 10:14

sounds that way...so tights or stockings (suspenders)?

PigeonofDoom · 18/08/2019 11:04

Search for sock glue on amazon!

Nylonlover · 20/11/2025 06:59

I wear hold ups every day and they usually stay up for a few days. When the so start to come down I always have a bottle of body flew on hand which always keep them up even after washing ppl a1
