£500 to spend on new wardrobe

I am planning to spend about £500 on a new capsule wardrobe. I rarely buy myself things and if I do it tends "not to go" with other things I have. So, style queens, please tell me what I should buy. Im 5'3" and "sexually plump" I suit winter colours

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 23:03

jampots · 02/11/2006 23:04

well im obviously a little bit round but not quite Jabba the Hut. An old work friend used to use the phrase to make her feel better about being not stick thin

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 23:07

aaah. i see.
how old are you?
are you a casual / smart sort?
are you more trousers or skirt type?
what sort of personality do you have?
what word describes the "look" you are after?

jampots · 02/11/2006 23:07

Where do you normally shop jampots? I'm same height as you ... still not got rid of baby-weight (after two years ))

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 23:12

well?

jampots · 02/11/2006 23:12

i tend to do the boring M&S, John Lewis, Principles etc. I need to "up" my style though.

sorry controlfreeeeeeky

Im 38, I do wear jeans quite a bit but realise that I should in reality wear skirts. I guess I prefer a smartish (stylish) look but feel quite frumpy right now.

In RL Im quite shy and prefer to blend in although many people think im very confident.

sorry, still new to this ... have you looked in Primark? Have to look really well but the clothes are sooo cheap you can afford to experiment. I always look at what the (in my eyes) stylish women are choosing and then try those things to see how they look.

pointydog · 02/11/2006 23:21

someone soon is gonna mention monsoon. This is mumsnet.

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 23:23

would suggest monsoon for a change... they have a decent website if no store near you.
try knee length a line skirts staight or wide leg trousers and v neck tops (jersey / fine knits and quite fitted)
also suggest ballet pumps / round toed knee length boots / something with a heel
basics in strong neutrals: black / grey / white / navy (if you are a winter) not brown
tops / jewellry / accessories in strong colours fo a bit of fun: clear red / pink / emerald green.
have fun. enjoy

songbirdforever · 02/11/2006 23:23

Point taken.

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 23:24

pointydog!! you are truly telepathic. sorry to be so predictable! are you knew or name changer?? cant remember the thread but one of your posts really made me laugh earlier this pm.

pointydog · 02/11/2006 23:26

uncanny.

i am new. don't agree with name changing.

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 02/11/2006 23:27

well hello pointy.
are you a whippet or a lurcher or some other sort of pointy?

pointydog · 02/11/2006 23:27

songbirdforever - you were a breath of fresh air.

songbirdforever · 02/11/2006 23:29

M&S are doing some great stuff now ... though if I had £500 to spare right now I might think about buying 3-4 really great pieces ...

pointydog · 02/11/2006 23:29

Hello control. Yes a whippety thing. Those ugly sort of pointy dogs that seem to pop up in art through the ages.

songbirdforever · 02/11/2006 23:33

Thanks pointydog ... where d'ya get your name?

Blondilocks · 02/11/2006 23:33

Monsoon is lovely, also Jigsaw. If you're near one of their outlet shops you can get loads of bargains.

I'd just go to the high street & look in everywhere. Go with friends & try things on that they suggest even if you wouldn't normally look twice at things like that - you may be surprised!
