Dry skin - any good body moisturisers or is is just water needed?

So, I'm getting really dry skin on my body, especially my arms and legs. Is it really just dehydration or are there some good products out there of any description worth using. I hate drinking water - I drink coffee!

Bugger it's gonna be water and exercise isn't it? My face is fine, btw, it is just my body.

So! I came home with some Aveeno to try, I liked the sound of the Burts bees sugar scrub, but I live in quite a pants town, so will have to wait until I'm back at work on mon (work in a different town).

I've discovered HoF do sell Kiehls, so will put that on a maybe list as I have my gift card.

Yy, Aveeno! It is really easily absorbed, which is great. Other thicker creams just seem to sit on the surface (not actual science, obvs) and not be that as moisturising as they first seem.

TheSpottedZebra · 14/04/2015 16:54

Oh, and my top tip of getting it in a pump bottle, which somehow means that you're more likely to use it.

Mbear · 14/04/2015 17:50

Bugger, I got a tubey one, however it it works (as in, I continue for than 2 days in a row) then I shall consider the pump version.

I think Neutrogena is comparable to Aveeno- big 400mls bottle for around a fiver- but both are good.
Also OP use a loofah or something to get rid of dry skin scales in the shower. You can't moisturise dead skin very well.

Lardylassnomore · 14/04/2015 18:12

I think Aveeno might me on offer at boots arm. I saw tubes of Aveeno in my local home bargains too. The bath/ shower wash is also good

Mbear · 14/04/2015 20:24

Yes, the aveeno was 20-30% off and I got it from super drug but Boots had the same offer, just less selection in my local store.

Good shout pinkfrocks - I don't have a loofah, but a brush thingy and I did use that in my shower.

Ha! Hope it works for you. If it helps to increase my water (don't like it plain) I use the breville active blender thingy? Chuck in an apple/pear and top up with water and blend! Healthy, delicious and you drink some water without noticing :-)

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 14/04/2015 22:34

Enough omega 3 in the diet and trilogy firming body lotion.

Bubble00 · 15/04/2015 15:34

Aveeno really helped my flaky dry sensitive skin. Also no fake fragrance -so thankful as in the throes of morning sickness. Bodywash good too. Highly recommended.Grin

+1 for Aveeno. Their Shower Oil is amazing and I find it non-greasy. Just soaks right in.

hanbods · 15/04/2015 20:37

I haven't used Aveeno on myself but after being prescribed three different creams for my babies dry skin and eczema and not making a jot of difference to his skin I tried Aveeno WOW amazing stuff he quickly like after only a couple of applications of it had much improved skin and now has the lovely soft baby skin we all expect our babies to have. He still has a mild steroid cream for the really bad eczema behind his knees but the Aveeno has really sorted his skin.

I've just discovered a neat trick for making lotion more effective - I apply it using a dry flannel... I know that sounds odd, but I've been using one of those ikea flannels each day with blobs of moisturiser, and the combined exfoliating / moisturising effect is the most effective thing I've used on my rough feet, bumpy arms, grey knees etc

Strawforest · 16/04/2015 03:41

Melrose is miraculous for dry skin. You can buy it from any good pharmacy and it's very inexpensive. It comes in a push up tube and is a very old remedy which was recommended by my great grandmother. It works well when applied at bedtime and is great for chapped hands, lips and sore noses when you have a cold. I took it into hospital recently and it worked wonders on my lips after major surgery lasting 7 hours. I carry it in my makeup bag and use it for all the family.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 16/04/2015 23:21

Some great ideas on this thread. Haven't heard of Melrose butI like a blast from the past so will give it a try - sounds good for splits in fingers < ouch > and < ew >. And Aveeno - I'm sure a gp recommended it as a bath emolient once, but body lotion sounds worth a try.

Skinheadmermaid · 17/04/2015 00:33

I use the yellow Vaseline one.

Mbear · 17/04/2015 07:11

Thanks Closer - will try the flannel trick.

Also to hanbods - when I had bad skin when I was pregnant I used to put porridge oats in some old tights, run the bath water through it and then tie it off (so the oats won't leak) and let it Bob around the bath and gently rub over my skin. Seems like it's greasy but it really is lovely and really helped to soothe my skin - just wondered if that was worth trying as well for your baby?

Aldi body lotion in the red bottle us brilliant

MairzyDoats · 17/04/2015 08:17

Dry body brushing pre shower is also very good for getting rid of dead skin (makes moisturising more effective) and improving circulation. Has got rid of my bumpy upper arms and thighs.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 17/04/2015 23:26

Do you use shower gels with sulfates? I changed to sulfate free and my skin is miles better. Sulfates are very harsh. I get mine in tk maxx usually.
