Makeup brushes

Hello all, I'm looking for some recommendations for makeup brushes. I want a decent set of face brushes (have loads of eye ones), there are that many I don't know where to start. I know real techniques brushes are popular but I'm not really sold on them after buying their eyeshadow brushes . Tia

I wash them exactly the same, and then they either fall apart or go clumpy and/or scratchy. I have tried proper brush shampoo, baby shampoo and Dove hand wash.

The scratchiness was getting to me too, last time I did them I conditioned them afterwards as well with some conditioner for dry hair that was knocking about the bathroom. Seemed to work but I felt a bit ridiculous doing it.

Try using baby oil first to get the makeup out, then wash the oil out? I literally just use herbal essences and condition them maybe once a month when I can be bothered. It does help keep them nice.

Or maybe just get mac brush spot cleanser and use that after every use to stop them getting so clogged up with makeup they're unusable? It's a bit gross, but they're only going on your own clean face so not so badGrin

StayDry maybe the rough drying on a towel is too rough? I have lots of makeup brushes, including most of the Real Techniques ones, and have never had one go scratchy.

I wash them gently with a bit of baby shampoo and then squeeze the excess water out of the bristles (I don't let the water get into the ferrule) and let them dry lying flat with the bristle end lying off the edge of the shelf.

I think you might be a bit too thorough with your cleaning technique.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 16/04/2015 22:18

I'm not the one with the scratchy brushes!Grin I am really thorough though, I have very fussy skin, think a whole new colony of spots if I leave my makeup on overnight, and I break out if my foundation brush isn't kept squeaky clean every other use.

I wondered if the change in texture others are experiencing could be down to the PPs brushes not being cleaned thoroughly enough...

Yeah it's more a squeeze into a towel I do, rather than a scrub, maybe that's your issue Dame?

It's a mystery!Grin

I tend to wash my brushes with cetaphil as I know it doesn't irritate my skin, it removes make up and leaves them soft!

Washing my brushes has been on my todo list for a lonnnnnggg time. Blush .

ELF studio vv g for cheaper brushes, bought some as a stopgap and still using them three years later!

I'm very gently, and just sort of blot the excess water out of the brush. I think I might try a spray on cleanser and see how I get on with that.

Micellar water is amazing for cleaning brushes.
Drying dense brushes is hard work, I gently squeeze them dry and then usually leave them outdoors if the weather is sunny. I use kabukis a lot and wash them every week. I use a shallow plastic yogurt/ dessert container and soak them for 5-15 mins (not wetting the ferrule). I fluff them up when they are dry.

Oh I have tons of micelar water! I just washed my sponge, it was mega grim!BlushGrin
