I'm pregnant and went for a bra fitting today

I just wanted to share my experience today Smile
I'm 17 weeks and have been persevering with my current Bravissimo 28E bras by popping an extender in the back. I decided enough was enough though as every night I'm left with sore red marks so I went along to John Lewis at first. Not only did the assistant insist that my breasts will not grow any bigger during the pregnancy because they stop growing at 12 weeks Hmm (my breasts have definitely increased in the last week) but that I also HAVE to wear non-wired bras. She fitted me with some very unflattering 34D t shirt bras which looked horrendous under my clothes Sad

I then went to Bravissimo, was told I can wear under wired as long as I haven't been told otherwise by a medical professional and so therefore I could stick to my favourite Satine style. Hoorah! I have come away with two very comfortable and pretty 30FF bras.

I'm a bit gutted because the bravissimo bras are twice the price of john Lewis but I couldn't bring myself to live in those monstrosities for the next few months. Who decided that pregnant women have to keep away from attractive underwear?

It's a con, so they could sell us those horrible maternity bras. I agree, there's no need.
Bravissimo bras are expensive, but you can find the same styles and sizes cheaper on ebay or brastop.
As for not growing after 12 weeks, I bloody wish!

Willow33 · 13/04/2015 21:38

I was told by midwife and various websites which I can't remember that non wired are best because the wired ones don't allow the breast tissue grow as it needs to. Personally found the wired ones to dig on and pinch tbh.
You will grow beyond 12 weeks for sure. Smile

HazleNutt · 13/04/2015 21:55

wired ones are fine, as long as you buy new ones to fit your size - the wire should not be resting on the breast tissue in the first place.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/04/2015 21:55

If your wires dig in and pinch then they don't fit. Wires are fine in pregnancy so long as they do fit. The reason it's advised against is because so few women wear bras which fit well and know what a good fit looks like

bonzo77 · 13/04/2015 21:57

Wired is fine as long as they fit well or are a bit big rather than small. I'm also 17 weeks and have got 2 bras that are one back size and 2 cup sizes bigger than I started with. I'm sure that with extenders they'll see me through to the end.

Pregnancy and bras was a time of hell for me.

If you can afford to, keep buying wired, but check size regularly. I went 32F to 32H. Didn't really change on back size.

Feeding bra's are a total joke at that size though. The best I found were Elle Mc, which stop at E cup but they didn't restrict milk flow unlike Royce (Shit bras).

I love satine bras!

HoppityVoosh · 13/04/2015 22:04

OP, are you me?!

Also a 28E pre-pregnancy and will be heading to bravissimo soon for some more Satine bras!

Minshu · 13/04/2015 22:21

My back size went from 32 to 38 Shock when I was pregnant (went straight back down afterwards). Cup size continued to increase beyond 12 weeks. John Lewis refused to measure me for a nursing bra as I wasn't pregnant. DD was 8 months old. I still don't understand their logic Confused moral of the story is John Lewis know nothing about boobs.

BiddyPop · 14/04/2015 08:58

M&S are as bad. I ended up buying bras from a specialist shop that didn't sell much by way of nursing bras, but got in stock especially for me to get something that fitted, I ended up getting plain but well fitted - 1 black, 1 white and also buying 1 nice aqua lacy one from them as a pretty one.

I fed DD until 9 mo, and went through a few different sizes in that time. But I was able to go back to ordinary bras from about 7 mo as we were only feeding at home by then (I was back FT at work when she was 4mo).

I had hoped things would be better by now (DD is now 9 yrs!).

But friends are still complaining about M&S.

That makes sense statistically. With so many women wearing the wrong size I guess that's the most common scenario that bras fitters are faced with.

Thanks for the tip HazleNutt. If I need to get more bras I'll be sure to look on eBay and brastop.

I overheard a fitter telling a poor woman in Mothercare, that as she measures 31 and 39 (iirc), she should be in a 36C..

5YearsTime · 14/04/2015 22:41

You also have the option of getting fitted at bravissimo but then trying on bras yourself in other shops!

For nursing bras try hot milk. Best I've found so far!

Strawberrycheese, were you in Oxford Circus branch this morning per chance?
