hair toner for use at home?

My highlighted hair is too warm and brassy, is there such a thing as toner for use at home to make it more ashy? I'm feeling a bit like I have a proper yellow hair and I hate it although I'm sure I'm being dramatic. My hairdresser said that getting an ashy brown or blond is very difficult but I'm wondering if this is true, I know many people with dyed ash blonde hair. Tia

Oh no, is my hairdresser right? Is there nothing I can do to take the yellow ness from my hair?

There is 'silver' shampoo and conditioner and toners that are violet coloured. Its violet pigments that tone the yellowness down. Did your hairdresser not tell you about this? there are various brands out there to choose from.

Sorry yes I should have said that I've tried this to no avail sadly. I wonder if there's any sort of stronger purple thing than shampoo like a toner. I looked in my local boots but it's a very small one so nothing there. I've seen the tomato ketchup thing recommended on here for warming colour up but nothing for cooling it down. Does anyone know what would happen if I put an ash blonde dye over it? It's mid warm brown with yellow highlights at the mo, eek!

Hi janfebmarch,
Have you tried toning shampoo? You can get it from Boots, Superdrug and big supermarkets.
John Frieda does a shampoo and conditioner to remove brassy tones, you can also try Touch of Silver. Touch of Silver worked well for me in terms of colour but didn't leave my hair very soft.
Fudge Clean Violet shampoo for sale on Amazon has good reviews.
I have heard of people making their own toning shampoo by mixing purple dye in their normal product but maybe that's a bit too fussy for you at this stage.

Sorry, cross-posted.
Try the one from Amazon, it seems a very strong and effective product. You leave it on for 20 minutes so it will probably have more of a result than just shampoo.

You could try Revlon colour bomb in White Platinum? It's a conditioner with colour

I'll try those, thanks very much
