Too old for mini skirts???

mummypoo · 02/11/2006 15:20

I always used to wear mini skirts when I was working before having dc but haven't had much confidence to since, particularly because I don't like the short skirts that barely cover your bum!
I've seen a really nice tartan mini skirt in Next and was tempted to buy it thinking it would look nice with thick black tights and black boots but a voice in my head kept saying "mutton dressed as lamb!" so I put it back and left the shop in shame .
Now I think maybe I should have gone for it. I'm 36 by the way and size 10-12.
Just wondered what other MNers think about this.

a classy one would be fine

ie not denim, tartan is borderline

docket · 02/11/2006 15:27

I think wintery short skirts (i.e. with thick tights) are more forgiving (that's what I tell myself anyway, I'm 34 and will wear short skirts in winter but not with bare legs). If you liked it then go for it!

mummypoo · 02/11/2006 15:29

Its not short short IYSWIM. Just above the knee and with pleats - not tight.
i did like it but I can't afford to buy it and not have the guts to wear it.

Doesn't sound remotely muttony! Buy it and make sure you wear it!

Tinker · 02/11/2006 16:34

Oh, I saw same skirt and had same thoughts. But I'm 42 and size 10/12.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2006 16:39

I'm 35 and a size 10-12.

I would NOT wear a mini skirt.

Sorry, they're not for me.

northerner · 02/11/2006 16:41

There is a rule about women over 30 mot wearing mini's, but it depends on the skirt and you imo.

NP I bough a denim mini skirt at the weekend to wear with black opaques and my flat bown sued pochaontas boots. Am I a trollop?

nailpolish · 02/11/2006 16:44

black tights and brown boots?

tsk tsk

i just dont like denim minis

not for me but then thats just my opinion!

i love tartan minis and black opaques actually, but that fashion ahs been around about 4 times in my lifetime so im bored of it

northerner · 02/11/2006 16:45

Well beigey boots, more light beige than brown.

I agree about tartan and black tights. A bit over done.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2006 16:46

Men look great in tartan kilts and scarves.

Wee boys in tartan kilts for laddies.

Wee lassies in tartan dresses.

Old ladies in tartan shawls.

Brides w/their husband's tartan wraps round them.

On everyone else: NAFF.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2006 16:46

Oh, I forgot school girls.

nailpolish · 02/11/2006 16:46

why not try chocolate tights?

next have some great browny colours

ps northerner you and i have the same rl name

northerner · 02/11/2006 16:49

Oh yeah, hadn't thought of chocolate tights

Will look this weekend. Will wear on bonfire night.

The same first name you mean?

expatinscotland · 02/11/2006 16:51

a skirt and tights on bonfire night?

is it supposed to be cold, though?

how come i never see big bonfire night celebrations in scotland, outside of neds looking for yet another excuse to fire raise and set off fireworks.

marymillington · 02/11/2006 16:51

Its not just dress size that counts - spectacular legs are what's required.

And IMO though miniskirts (even tartan ones) can look edgy and cool on the young and nubile but a bit twee on anyone over 25. and with the black tights slightly clompy boots thing, one can risk looking like a golf club

nailpolish · 02/11/2006 16:51

yes same first name

although my full name is the shortened version

iyswim

irrelevant fact no. 235345346

nailpolish · 02/11/2006 16:53

cosy tights can be warmer that trousers imo

exp didnt you have beltane festival?

we are having a bonfire and fireworks night on the beach hosted by hunky lifeboat crew

pointydog · 02/11/2006 17:57

Hell yeah!

northerner · 02/11/2006 18:47

Expat we saw fantastic fireworks in Edinurgh at the end of the festival!

We are off to the stray, I will have skirt, tights and boots on but also huge puffa jacket and hat, scarf and gloves

I love bonfire night.

PennyForTheGuy · 02/11/2006 20:50

My Sister is 44. Admittedly has fab figure, size 8, with good boobs. i.e. not eggs in socks like mine. She wears minis all the time and low cut tops etc.

However.....

She does look like mutton, and sometimes, looks bloody ridiculous.

Depends how you wear those sort of clothes, though. Sister would probably deem thick tights as being 'too covered up'

mummypoo · 02/11/2006 21:30

Well I bought it, tried it on and it looks ok. Dp was only disappointed that I won't wear it with stockings and suspenders (WTF!!)
Will wear it to firework party tomorrow night (with long coat on over top in case I lose my bottle!)
Thanks for all the advice.
