Can I dye my dark brown hair dark blonde??

My natural colour is medium brown. I have been putting an all over permanent dark brown on for a few years to cover the grey. The last time I did this was 5 months ago. I want to go a bit lighter so I have just bought a L'Oreal Excellence Dark Blond permanent dye. I am now a bit concerned that I am going to go very orange.
Any advice>

I won't make much difference to the colour it is now tbh, it's so hard to lighten dyed dark hair with just a box dye. I stripped mine using the colour remover stuff from Boots when mine was dark before I could go light, the other way is to bleach your hair first but I don't recommend this as it just ruins the hair.

I don't think it would go green, it may lighten your roots if you have any regrowth but I doubt it would actually lift your hair colour.

Love being auto corrected Confused I hope you get the gist of what I meant lol! I don't think it would go orange either, I dyed my hair dark brown for years but couldn't lighten it without stripping it out first .... I give up with this phone! I am having to re-type everything as it likes to make me sound like an utter baffoon!

Thanks TheFutureMrsB
I am walking past Boots on my way home from work. I might pop in and see if I can get a colour remover.

I'm struggling to lighten mine at home, but don't want to revert to the time (never mind the cost) that it would take to have it done at a salon,

I've had red in it in the past, so when I do the colour stripping I do go bright orange with inch long white roots.

I've just dyed out the grey roots with a mid-dark brown to eliminate the grey. Then, I'm trying a dye I bought via amazon from europe that is specifically made to lighten dark brown hair without making it orange.

It promises to make it '3 shades lighter'.

I shall report back!

I miss the L'oreal (or similar) lightest brown that actually lightened your hair a shade each time you used it. Unfortunately, after about 4 uses the condition of my hair was suffering.

It's called Colour B4 or there is a cheaper alternative in places like Savers with a similar name.

I died my milk-chocolate coloured hair progressively blonder over a period of a few years, dark blonde was fine but much lighter and it did start to go yellowy and very damaged.

It's nearly fully grown out now, thankfully!

My hair is currently darker than its original mousy brown. I'm hoping that the kit will lighten it closer to the natural colour so I can dye it a mid brown and not have it stay too dark.

Hi , I used colour be4 and although it did lighten you have to use a temp colour first as anything slse just 'grabs and goes really dark ! Uss a semi in dark blonde and went almost dark brown :( darker than bloody before ! Spent a week using washing powder to wash it out !! Did it again then left it a week ( in hiding with grey roots and brassy ends ) used a toner then gradually moved on to a semi , ended up a light brown then got highlights and put dark blonde over that ! Mm still prefer it darker but this does hide the grey a bit better ! Some days I want to shave it all off and start again !! God we arent ever happy with our hair ;)

Itsalldramarama · 09/04/2015 23:21

And yes the dark blonde will only change your roots it won't touch the dark dyed bits ... Did this once with a plum ( long time ago ) and had lovely purple roots and black ends ... I'm the queen of hair disasters ;)

I dyed my dark brown hair many years ago now. I used a extra lightening blond shade which went red/blond and the next day I did hand drawn highlights all over. I then had a warm blond colour. Have been blond ever since.

Hmmm.... my 'lightening' dye has made it a touch lighter, but only a touch.

I've been looking at YouTube video's for lightening your hair without bleach, found one I like the look of and am off to buy the ingredients tomorrow, though it will take a number of applications, I'm going to try three times a week and see how it does.

Recipe is :boil 500ml water in a pan with the juice of 2 lemons and 1tablespoon of coconut oil (optional, stops the lemon juice drying your hair out too much) for 10 mins. Then add 5-10 teabags (I'm going for 10) of chamomile tea and a teaspoon of honey, again allow to simmer for 10 mins. Cool, pour into a spray bottle through a strainer (and funnel) then spray all over hair, leave for 15 minutes (go out in the sun if possible) then wash out.

OP, I'm like you: been colouring my hair dark brown for years to cover grey. I think my hair (which used to be golden blonde) is naturally mousy/dishwater with grey.

It's not that I want to go blonde, but I am curious to know what my options are for going lighter as I have read that older women dying their hair dark starts to look odd and it ages them. I think I still look good but I may be delusional. At any rate, I'd like to know what my options are. My hair is very long and I would rather not cut it!
