Wedding outfit for a mum tum!

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 10:09

It's my sister's wedding in 6 weeks' time and I'm feeling completely desperate about what I'm going to wear! I have 2 DC - 2yo and 5mo - and my body hasn't recovered yet. I have no idea what suits me, I have been shopping a couple of times and ended up in tears at how dreadful I look.

I'm 5 foot 6, broad shoulders, not a very big bust, large mum tum, wide hips.

Any advice as to where to start?!

I'm sure you don't look awful!

Right, what colouring are you, and what size? You don't like your tummy but could you cope with your calves being out? Can you do heels?

Other people on here are brilliant at this, often help me and will do for you too im sure.

I'd definitely recommend having your hair cut before the wedding if you can afford it and a spray tan and manicure if you're treating yourself, if not do it at home. All that will make you look and feel much more groomed and not so mummish!

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 16:03

Thanks Jenda. I was a 12 pre pregnancy but am probably a large 14 now, possibly even 16 in the tummy/hip area. I don't have a size 16 bust though which means I don't 'fill' dresses very well in the chest.

Blue/green eyes and mid brown hair. Cut is a great idea and I am definitely going to get a tan of some kind.

My calves are actually ok, I can cope with my legs! I can do heels as long as they are not skyscrapers!

How about a top & skirt combo? Something like this www.tedbaker.com/uk/Womens/Clothing/Skirts/SEAMER-Crystal-droplets-skirt-Nude-Pink/p/115706-57-NUDE-PINK
The skirt is pricey but the cami's range between £30-£40 & you could get a skirt much cheaper elsewhere.

BackforGood · 09/04/2015 16:09

Also give some idea of budget.
There are folks on here who are BRILLIANT at finding clothes for people, but there is a massive range in what we can all afford. Smile

What about one of those personal shoppers in somewhere like John Lewis or Debenhams? I've never been myself, but am trying to pluck up the courage to see what they can come up with to sort me out....

Pippin8 · 09/04/2015 16:15

Or topshop have some nice skirts & camis.
m.topshop.com/h5/product?productId=18822911
m.topshop.com/h5/product?productId=19262683
The Camis come in all different colours.

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 16:59

Thanks for advice so far. I'd be willing to pay up to about £250 excluding accessories.

I love that ted baker skirt. But I don't know if I could pull off a cami with broad shoulders and bingo wings??

I will check out the dress links now.

I had to do a reading at my best friend's wedding when my DS was 6 months old and I was terrified. I booked a slot with a personal shopper at JL and got something really good. It's free and they have lots of good concessions if you have a big store near you. I then got a lovely hat / large fascinator which I hope detracted from the tum and giant boobs!

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 17:08

I like the first dress the most. Not too keen on fabric of second and the third is a lovely colour but it looks a bit like it's a dress over a top? Didn't know of that website though, will take a proper look.

Have been toying with idea of personal shopper but I have always been worried that they will be a bit pushy? And to be honest also embarrassed that they will see how awful I look in some of these clothes, I usual don't venture out of the dressing room!

I'd go to John Lewis and try on lots of things - even if you don't see the personal shopper, the changing room assistants are often really helpful

Start with things like this to hold in your tummy; this with some movement and flattering neck line; this might be a good shape bodice for you, with a jacket or wrap; great colour and detailing

Any of these look like the sort of thing you'd feel comfortable in?

Lardylassnomore · 09/04/2015 17:20

I like this. www.marksandspencer.com/sleeveless-duster-dress/p/p60068037

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 17:27

I like that first JL dress but it feels a little bit 'worky' for a spring wedding? I'm not too keen on the second but will definitely try the other two on if they are in stock.

I think part of the problem is that I have a disconnect in my head between what I want to wear and what I can wear. I also feel a bit of an awkward age, I am early thirties and lots of outfits seem lovely for my mum and lots for my mid twenties sister but I either feel frumpy or try hard!

You could always wear a jacket in the day & remove during the evening when the lights go down m.topshop.com/h5/product?productId=17659158 I've just bought this, but in a blush/nude colour.
Otherwise how about a capped sleeved top with an embellished neck.

Pippin8 · 09/04/2015 17:34

I'm mid thirties & am über conscious about what is age appropriate. I really don't know why we care!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 09/04/2015 18:09

I agree it's a tricky age for non- work smart dressing!

Taking a different tack, how about Anglomania; Erdem; Raoul; or Chloe?

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 18:39

I really like those Anglomania, Erdem and Chloe dresses. I have never ordered from that site before - is it just online? Can you return? Would be a bit dubious about sizing?

Pippin that topshop jacket is lovely. I had been fixed on a dress but maybe a skirt/top/jacket combo could be the way to go?

Yes, you can return to the Outnet and down in the details underneath the pictures they have the measurements for each item

Pippin8 · 09/04/2015 20:20

Love the erdem dress!

VamonosPest · 09/04/2015 21:54

Yes, me too Pippin, it's lovely. But only available in size 6!
