I am v ashamed of my bitten nails. They're awful. It's kind of a habit. I've tried all sorts previously. And some of them are bitten to the quick. Anyway I am absolutely desperate to sort them out. How long a nail do I need to get false ones? And if I do get false ones will the nail underneath grow nicely? And what's the best to go for? Can anyone advise?

Falsies absolutely ruined my nails. I had them for my wedding day and will never have them again. Could you treat yourself to a nice manicure instead?

False nails ruin your own even if you only have them for a few weeks. Even shellac isn't great. I would get yourself some solar oil and massage in a few times a day and you will see an improvement within a week which will hopefully stop you wanting to bite them...worked for me anyway :-)

Ok -I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I used to have horrid nails that were really short. I got shellac on them 2 years ago and have been every 3 weeks to have to removed and reapplied since. My nails are now beautiful, really strong and have grown really long.

Shellac will not ruin your nails if it is applied and removed properly by a good nail technician.

I've had shellac done 3 times at 3 different salons and removed professionally each time. Each time my nails were destroyed. Sil gets on great with it so I went to the lady who does hers but it was the same story again. Some nails just can't take shellac.

Sorry to hijack but I have horrible bitten nails too. I have had false nails lots of times, I usually now just use shop bought glue on ones which are fine, but they don't last very long and not really appropriate for my very hands on job. How does shellac work?

Allie82 · 06/04/2015 16:25

Shellac is a long lasting polish -about 2weeks ish. The trouble is they file the 'shine' from the top of your natural nail before applying ( I assume for added grip) but this thins the nail bed. Ok once but I wouldnt do it regularly.

Snowberry86 · 06/04/2015 17:06

Allie82- a good nail technician will not file the top from your nails first!

Mine doesn't even buff them before applying shellac.

It's just a gel nail varnish, paint on, 1 minute under a uv light and it dries. Chip proof and will last 2-3 weeks.

Lj8893 · 06/04/2015 17:27

So would it work on awfully short bitten (bad condition) nails?

DragonRojo · 06/04/2015 17:56

I used to buy my nails, although not really badly. Now I have Shellac done every three weeks and my nails are in very good condition. Every few months I will go without polish for a week and you can see them that there is no damage. A good technician will not file the nail down at all. So, in answer to your question, I would recommend it. You can choose a very light colour which will go well with shorter nails and while the polish is on, your nail will have the chance to grow and recover. Nail biting is an addiction so you will have to keep on top of your manicures until you have definitely bitten it.

DragonRojo · 06/04/2015 17:56

*bite

Snowberry86 · 06/04/2015 17:58

It will work on any nail type.

Obviously it won't make them look longer, or grow any quicker. But it will stop you biting them and will stop them snapping and breaking so it doesn't take long to get them to a good length.

ProudForMe · 06/04/2015 18:01

My trick to stop biting my nails is to have my nails with varnish on all the time. When they have varnish on I dont bite them its a bit of a pain to keep doing my nails so often but they do look nice when they have had chance to grow

burnishedsilver · 06/04/2015 18:14

Mine weren't filed over the top and shellac still destroyed them. Try it but be aware that while it looks lovely on it really isn't for everyone. About half the people that I know who've had it have got on well with it. The other half have had the same experience as me. Its not necessarily the technicians fault.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/04/2015 18:16

I have gelish done and my nails are fine. Solar oil is great, if you do it daily it will really improve the condition.
