I've got shoulder length more or less one length hair (one layer slightly shorter than the rest so the lower layer flicks out) which I have coloured professionally a medium brown colour. I am crap at fitting hair appointments in and my re-growth is really really grey - I'd say maybe about 80% grey. I've been considering for a while just letting the grey grow through but I'd need some sort of interim colour on the remaining coloured hair as the line is so stark between the natural grey and the coloured brown. Anybody got any good tips on what to ask the stylist to do - what has worked for you? Any thoughts very welcome.

It's always best to ask the stylist. I went blonde for quite a while to hide the grey. Now I have found a new hairdresser who uses organic colours and she mixes three colours together to make a nice coppery shade. So I am not giving into grey just yet.

Not much help, but I mine chopped off! Hairdresser is trying to convince me to get light highlights, maybe even some blonde, but honestly, I can't be bothered now I've made the decision. My friend who has longer hair uses non permanent dyes to reduce the two tone effect. I think they wash out after about 4 weeks.

Shoulder length bob here, not much grey really I suppose, maybe 10-15% but mostly underneath. I am 47 and have always vowed not to colour it.

I would ask your hairdresser and reckon non-permanent is the way to go.

I have a fiend who is managing this really well (or even a friend, she's not that bad) she has reddish brown dyed hair, but is as grey as a badger really. She has had grey/blonde big streak at front done, with similar highlights through the rest and when she goes to the salon she just gets more added. (It's not me btw-luckily pale blonde so just stopped dying altogether)

I've been umming and ahhing about this for the longest time. I'm 41 and am v dark brunette so my grey showing through is pretty drastic.

Recently it's obvious that I need to get things done more frequently as within 3/4 weeks it's showing again. I've been wanting to go grey but I'm not brave enough. Should I?

I work in a professional capacity and do wear clothes that are pretty structured although on days off I am in casual jeans, hoodies, jeggings what have yous.

I'm going to watch this thread and see if I'm brave enough to do this!!

My hairdresser thought I could but when I didn't get it done for 3 months and happened to bump into her on the street, she looked shocked. I don't think I'm mentally ready!! Blush

I'm pretty grey it's threaded through out my hair and is very noticeable.
I had a good 1.5"-2" of regrowth showing that showed the grey in its glory. I was planning on having a chin length bob (up from shoulder) and just stop colouring it (permanent at home box kit) and have a cut every 8 weeks, but I got a bit ansty and have put off the cut and got some semi permanent 28 wash stuff in a similar colour instead.
I wacked it on on Wednesday and have found it hasn't covered my grey like the permanent box does, but it has given me lots of unintentional highlights/made it very tonal - which is not the end of the world for me and I'll keep doing it for now.

I'm with you. I got my long hair chopped into a short very choppy style just a few weeks back - I can literally brush and run some mousse through and it looks great again. My roots are about 3 inches down but you don't notice them because of the choppy style. I love it!

Cocolepew · 04/04/2015 09:35

I had short hair and cut it even shorter, literally a few inches all over. But I wasn't as grey as I thought.
At the front sides it was pure white, the back and crown was still dark brown (my natural colour) and the sides and front top were a mixture.
It looked ridiculous and now I'm blonde.
It might have worked better if my hair was long but it looked far too patchy.

cuddybridge · 04/04/2015 11:34

I have switched to having the hairdresser put on a wash out toner, it covers the greys and fades over 6 weeks, at the moment I have a fetching purply plum shade on my grey hair. But it means when the grey gets too much hopefully I can let it go naturally.

Can you do anything fancy with your hair to disguise the "join"? Pin it up, or give yourself a zig-zag parting to confuse the eye?

nameuschangeus · 04/04/2015 19:25

Thanks everyone, there are a few ideas to go with here. I'm too fat to cope with a crop but I think the gradual lightening via semi permanents might be the way to go. Wish me luck!

Lowlights?? Dark brown/grey/ white/ash/ slate etc ... My hairdresser suggested these. I had very dark brown hair and very pale skin. Light brown/blonde would definitely not have looked good on me.

But I went grey rather young and I bit the bullet in my 40s and went bright white. A bit of a shock but now I identify with it.
