PMLE: please come and tell me how you deal

So last summer I finally realised that I probably have polymorphic light erruption, rather than just a minus burn time and/or the world's only allergy to hypo-allergenic sun cream. In the brief intervals of light between snow showers I'm beginning to worry about how to deal with it this year. Dr Google suggests:

  • beta-carotene supplements
  • polypodium leucotomas (seems to be marketed as Heliocare)
  • a Canadian lotion called Shirudo AGR+E
  • Eucerin sun cream
Do any of these hold out any hope? Or should I just stay inside and take vit d supplements, accepting that I'm too Scottish for the sun? Any words of help or advice appreciated, thanks.

Grin at the thought of sun in Scotland (looking out at the snow this morning)

The only thing that helps me is taking anti-histamine orally and using piz buin anti allergy.

Another vote for Piz Buin anti-allergy here

Morning Fingerbobs - As spring is approaching I was thinking about my PMLE last night. The GP prescribed me some suncream, can't remember what it was called & said that I could go & get treatment (skin hardening?) - but this was after a serious outbreak last year.

Piz Buin made mine 100 times worse.

I find ultrasun sunscreen (I get mine from QVC)has really helped mine along with a daily antihistamine

I have PMLE and Heliocare has been a tremendous help. I start taking it in March then until about October. Take two on days I am exposed to lots of sun. I don't sunbathe or anything but live sailing and water sports.
Piz buin allergy is pretty good too.
No substitute for clothing though!

I get this! Yet another mystery cleared up by MN. Thank you. I've been calling it uva allergy for years because if I use sunscreen with v good uva rating I don't get it. Basically, I figured it was telling me to stay out of the sun (Celtic skin, etc) but how nice to have a name.
Will also look into vit d deficiency as just read it can be a side effect of staying out of the sun and using heavy sunscreen (which is obvious but I hadn't thought much about it...).

Thank you all. I'll try Heliocare, I think, and see if that helps

Hi not sure if this helps but I have red hair and crazy pale skin and I use p20 and take lycopene supplements and they have both helped massively. I can tell the difference when I don't take the tablets x
