I've been on many an acid toner thread in the past and I'm all about the good skincare regime but I feel it's just not enough anymore. I'm having monthly breakouts around my chin area and I finally went to the doctor and told her I couldn't have anymore anti biotics and I wanted a topical retinoid. I now am the proud owner of a tube of Differin gel. Woo hoo!!!

Is anyone else battling the curse of shit skin. I have no bloody wrinkles at 34 but a chin like Mount Vesuvius. So what has worked for everyone?what hasn't worked? Mainly just a support for those who are battling "the spots" bastards

When I used Sudo it made my spots into whiteheads overnight which just had to be squeezed - there was no way I could leave the house with them! It also seemed to make my T Zone more greasy. I had a crap routine then though.

I'm finding that since stepping up my routine any spots I do get seem to go much more quickly.

All skin issues start in the gut, so it's important to get the diet right (whole foods, sufficient protein, fat and carbs, lots of veggies), take fish oils, probiotics, balance blood sugar. These are long term approaches.

Short term I'm a fan of the oil cleansing method and moisturizing with natural face oils like camellia, moringa and tamanu

gingerfluffball · 02/04/2015 11:55

Bakeoff depends on how I'm feeling each night, might stick to just on the spots though as putting it everywhere feels a bit greasy. Good to know other people were in the same boat though!

Ava I agree that a healthy diet is a good thing, but for some people with a genetic/hormonal basis for bad skin dietary changes just aren't going to cut it!

I am going to make an appointment at the GP's to get some differin, I think I've tried everything else.

The texture of my skin is pretty good, it's just either spotty or scarred and discoloured from spots.

I've suffered for about 20yrs and I've become somewhat obsessed with trying to find a cure.

I came across the low carb diet and how it helped acne, if you google it you will find out about how the insulin spikes are connected to acne, people also don't realise how much sugar they are eating and its not just the sweets etc, things promoted as healthy are packed full of sugar, anyway I saw a definite improvement cutting the carbs, had already cut biscuits, cakes, sweets etc with no effect. However still suffered breakouts, I cut dairy for a few weeks with no change, I now have cut gluten, Ive been suspect of an intolerance for a while and been tested for coeliac with negative results etc, I've not eaten it for a while but was never very strict with it, so would still eat it while out or not worry about the hidden stuff in jars etc. I had quite a lot of it over a 3 day period and had a very bad reaction, I had runny nose, cough, 2 ulcers in mouth and sensitive sore tongue, I'm convinced now that my body doesn't like it.

I've now cut it out strictly for two weeks now and my skin have really improved, I'm currently clear apart from the massive eruption that appeared on my nose yesterday! But I'm going to persist with low sugar and gluten free and if this doesn't work I don't know what I will do next, its really getting me down and is ruining my life :-(

At the moment my skincare routine is very simple and maybe that's helping too, putting all these lotions and potions has never worked for me and in fact I believe makes things worse as your skin reacts to it, over producing oil etc, I stopped moisturising at night a while ago and have recently stopped using anything to wash my face in the morning, I just splash with warm water and pat dry and I'm seeing a reduction in the oilyness, so at the moment what's working is:
Morning, wash face with warm water only and pat dry, moisturise with lavera balancing cream, apply mineral makeup.
Evening, wash face gently with a small amount of Dr Organic Manuka Honey face Scrub, no moisturiser, apply duac to any active spots and any I can feel under skin.
If I can afford it I sometimes use Suki Lemongrass exfoliant, its brilliant but quite expensive, skin feels lovely after using it.
I do use sudocream but I would not use this on spots you can feel under the skin as it will help them come through and turn them into a whitehead, I would use my duac cream for this and have prevented them coming to the surface this way, I will use sudocream on a spot that is already forming a whitehead to help it come through without squeezing the skin or on a healing spot to help with the redness.

mrsPnut, good for you! I'm getting on well with it. My spots have cleared up for the moment and no new ones have appeared so far. It takes a good few months to see a proper difference. I've taken a few nights off . I've been alternating nights as I didn't want to end up with a burnt/purge face.

I have prescription pills (Spiro and Doryx) plus prescription topical, but I also use a Clarisonic. For scarring, red areas and pitting I do dermafillers and Micropen treatments. I'm in my 50s.

CremeDeSudo · 05/04/2015 07:57

No one fancying the wee on the face that's in the papers recently?!

You know the little black dots from blocked pores you get on your nose? mine had gone but they've come back! Sad how do I get rid?

gingerfluffball · 05/04/2015 08:25

Don't know cremedesudo BUT apparently those pore strips you can buy that stick on and rip them all out are very bad according to most beauty editors!

Minnie11 · 05/04/2015 09:44

Wrapdress, that's useful info. Which one in particular do you use for pitted scars?

Wrapdress · 05/04/2015 16:40

Minnie - I had one really deep pit on one check and I had that filled with dermafiller. I had dermafiller injected in both checks though and it helped partly, but I need the micro-needling as well. The micro-needling will be 6 treatments, a month apart and it will smooth out more of the scarring. She also injects collagen during the mirco-needling. Generally, the dermafiller is for deeper scarring. The micro-needling covers 98% of my face, but the dermafiller is more focused. This is all still a work in progress - still working through the 6 micro-needling appointments. It appears to be helping the situation.

I'm at the other end of the scale to most posters here. Very dry, no spots.

I've had eczema since early childhood. And I have scars on my hands from it. I wear fingerless gloves a lot.

At the moment I'm having a depression related flare up and have a weeping patch on my neck which I've got fucidin for. I usually use dream cream from lush or aveeno when it's good, eumovate when it's bad.
Can anyone recommend a cleanser and toner suitable for dry, sensitive skin?

Lovewearingjeans · 05/04/2015 17:16

Joining! I have had flare ups on the right side of my chin. I have been using a Nip+Fab deep cleanser left on top of my spots overnight (it suggests this on the tub) really bringing them down. I am on holiday and using Body Shop vit E cleanser and Simple moisturiser, with Clinique City Skin as sun protection. At home I use Vichy serum and Pixi Glow, which I love. It's night cream I'm a bit stuck on. I find if I go out drinking, that rewards me with a nice spot too. I think I need to subscribe to a better diet, as I know I eat far too much sugar, and diet coke. Also a carb addict, especially in Winter! Hoping the warmer weather encourages a love of salad Confused

Minnie11 · 05/04/2015 17:56

Thanks for the detail Wrapdress. I'm going to have an assessment of my atrophic scar at a clinic tomorrow and wondering about dermaroller but only want the scar treated. I was wondering what the chances of any change are as I'm 40 but you've given me hope if you're seeing improvement.
