Sore eye lid...

I have noticed one eye lid this week looking dry and flaky. I don't know why, surely it's not make up or creams that have reacted badly as it's only one eye. Anyway , eye creams and normal moisturiser wasn't helping so I put some blue Nivea cream on it. The next day, it's itchy, pink, slightly swollen and shiny. Help me, what have I done and what on earth do I put on it now? Vaseline? Nothing? Tia

Nothing, and if it's still like it on Mon get to the Dr, if it worsens in any way over the weekend (especially pain) get yourself to out of hours dr. I ignored an eyelid like this for a few days till a colleague told me to get to the GP, the nurse warned me that there is a very serious condition that can develop and put me on antibiotics with warnings to get back to a Dr if it worsened over the weekend.

It's eczema. Go to pharmacy and get weakest hydrocortisone. Don't tell them it's for your eye as they won't sell it. Put on eye once. Maybe twice. Prob solved.

I had this suddenly start. No idea why. It comes and goes.

bonzo77 · 28/03/2015 07:32

improb that's terrible advice. How can you diagnose?

whoknows good advice. I've had similar and needed heavy duty antibiotics as was warned that if it deteriorated I would be admitted for iv antibiotics.

I've had this recently (too much crying :-() and tried Bepanthen nappy rash cream after seeing it recommended on here and it has worked a treat.

It's the medical section on mumsnet. Everyone's qualified on here.

janfebmarch · 28/03/2015 07:36

Sorry maybe I should have put it on the medical section, I was just thinking that some miraculous eye cream would be the answer. I'll get it checked out, thanks

I something similar regularly, for me it's stress related. It can be either a tiny patch or spread to cover my whole eye socket.

Even if I do nothing it goes in a week or two, I just moisturize it.

You could try simple eye ointment -not from the simple range, it's just the name of it, you can get it from all pharmacies.
Google blepharitis and see if your symptoms match up.
And as a pharmacist I'd strongly advise against buying hydrocortisone for the eyelid, it is only allowed on the face with a doctors prescription. The rules are there to protect so people lying to get items really makes me ??

DearTeddyRobinson · 28/03/2015 20:04

It could be blepharitis or a stye. Go to the pharmacist and they will tell you what you need, possibly Brolene. You will need to sterilise all your make up brushes etc ( you can use Milton) and get rid of your mascara, eye liner etc. sorry!

Wink

Sounds similar to eczema to me. I won't jump straight to steroids. I get eczema on my eyelids. Try a simple cream first - bit a cosmetic cream.
I like cetraben cream - you can get it from any pharmacy. If that doesn't help then a hydrocortizone ointment might help ( ointment is better than cream).

Bodicea · 28/03/2015 21:09
  • sorry not a cosmetic cream
southeastastra · 28/03/2015 21:09

i had this and baby shampoo was advised and bizarrely did work

Laquila · 28/03/2015 21:12

Do you use metal eyelash curlers? Just a couple of days use of them is enough for the nickel in them to bring my eyelids out in red, flaky skin. Weak hydrocortisone cream works for me, but used extremely sparingly. Disclaimer: if I were you, I'd go to the docs or speak to the pharmacist before trying steroids.

ElizabethHoover · 28/03/2015 21:15

Yes you one use the hydrocortisone once ime mines weirdly unpredictable

pudseypie · 28/03/2015 21:17

I have posterior blepharitis and what you described sounds a bit like my eyes when they're bad. I first tried the pharmacist who recommended some simple eye ointment and then tried both the optician and gp when it didn't heal. Optician spotted the cause in the end. Try the pharmacy first.

janfebmarch · 29/03/2015 08:40

Thanks for all the comments. Bizarrely the eye lid is completely better today but I'll buy some of the creams mentioned in case it flares up again and will see my gp
