Brunettes - which off the shelf perm hair dye do you recommend?

Just that really! I have dark brown, thick hair with increasing quantities of coarse white hairs coming in. I occassionally treat myself to a salon colour, but inbetween rely on a £5 or £6 box of dye from Boots/supermarket.

Went today for a really good look and couldnt decide. Ive used Nice and Easy in the past, and see they have a new Age Defy range out that is supposed to be best for ageing hair. anyone tried this?

But generally, just looking for recommendations. I'm not ready to go naturally grey/white yet!

I tend to use whatever is on offer/cheapest! This usually ends up being Superdrug's own. I've used it loads of times and it does the job perfectly well.

PrimalLass · 26/03/2015 22:10

Nice and Easy Natural Medium Brown. It is the best for me, but you could use a darker one (the Medium Cool Brown is lovely).

RaisingSteam · 26/03/2015 22:38

Personally I use L'oreal Excellence 5 (natural med brown IIRC). I mix the tube and bottle in a plastic pot and paint on with a brush from Superdrug. TBH need to do my roots soon. they are often on 3 for 2 or similar.

ThinkingOutLouder · 27/03/2015 12:39

I've used the VS Salonist in Dark Neutral Brown twice & I love the colour. It's a bit of a faff with doing your roots first but doesn't that apply to all hair dyes? It does come out dark at first but will fade over time, it says on the instructions to use shampoo to wash the dye out but I think next time I may just rinse & use the conditioner so to preserve the colour a bit longer.

weaselwords · 27/03/2015 12:41

Ha! I am reading this whilst dyeing my hair! I quite like the perfect 10 one as it's quick, but have just nearly asphyxiated myself with ammonia fumes.

Lynne2015 · 27/03/2015 13:22

I use red henna, my dark brown is really shiny and the grey is a lovely reddish colour, it looks like I have got highlights, even my hairdresser loves it

Downside - it takes a long time and is messy, otherwise its perfect

chipsandpeas · 27/03/2015 13:42

schwarkov (sp) pallette 800 dark brown - 2.99 in home bargains
works great for me and its cheap which i need as i really need to do my greys every 3-4 weeks

StayGoldPonyBoy · 27/03/2015 13:45

Dark brown I like loreal preference Iced Chocolate, medium I like nice and easy Medium Brown.

My mum likes Garnier Nutrisse Chocolate Brown, but her previously grey roots go a bit orangey when it starts to fade. Don't tell her I said that Wink

HenriettaBarnet · 27/03/2015 13:45

I use Olio dark brown 4.0. I like it - it's quite dark.

I only have a few strands of grey at the moment seems to cover them

Sleepyfergus · 27/03/2015 16:05

I'm a Boots own brand girl. I just went to my wardrobe to check the shade I buy (usually warm medium brown, or something like that) and I've run out-was due to do it soon, but have been dithering because I'm thinking of growing it out!

yumyumpoppycat · 27/03/2015 16:38

In terms of lasting, cheapness and non irritating effect, I also like home bargains schwarkov. I preferred the previous shade I used but unfortunately I can't remember which one [not helpful emoticon]

ha
doesnt everyone use Nice and easy 118?!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/03/2015 18:08

I find the John Frieda foam one better than any other I've tried.

Sleepyfergus · 27/03/2015 20:23

I used a Clairol mousse one and it was horrific. Left big blackish patches on my scalp which did go after a few washes and I didn't feel it was the easiest to apply, it was a bit of a faff!

CheeseEater · 27/03/2015 23:23

John Frieda foam here too - medium choc brown at the mo but I would say choose a lighter colour than usual as they all seem to come out quite dark. Olia went really patchy on my hair, there didn't seem to be enough mixture.

RubyReins · 28/03/2015 10:06

I used to use the John Frieda foam in 5.3 but they changed the formula and it is now much wetter and I find it harder to apply than I used to. Olia is good but I now use the new VS one. I like that it has a brush to really get in at the roots. It is lasting well too.
