Tell me about "Sleek" makeup range please

macnab · 26/03/2015 11:23

I live in Ireland and haven't seen Sleek makeup before, other than online uk stores. I prefer to buy when I can actually see the shades etc. A local chemist has started stocking Sleek makeup which I've heard mentioned on here before.

So, can you lovely ladies please advise me which products are worth getting? and any I should really avoid? I am 40, with reasonably ok skin (bit dull and some lines now Sad) I'm particularly interested in foundation, blush/contouring, lip gloss.

Thankyou!

A bit like Mac but more affordable imo. They do lots of bright colours, high pigment so suitable for darker skins. I have a couple of blushers and lipsticks. I would certainly recommend.

jjwhite · 26/03/2015 11:43

Their foundations all seem a bit heavy so I would avoid them (I had a foundation compact from them but it was really thick and looked dreadful on).

People rave about their blush/bronzer/highlighter compacts. I had a 'contour kit' which was good, and a bronzer/blush/highlighter kit which was also nice.

On the whole I would say their bronzers are decent for the lowish price, but the blushes I tried were all a bit obvious and unsubtle. Likewise with the highlighters - quite shimmery and not that subtle (although not everyone wants the 'natural' look so really depends what you're after!)

They have a great range of different lipstick colours - I got one called something like papaya punch which was a bright coral colour - bold and fun for summer evenings out. Colour was great but it was very drying and only looked good when my lips were in good condition.

I liked their lip pouts (pots of tinted lip gloss) although they had quite a strong synthetic smell - at first I liked it but it became a bit sickly. Nice as an alternative to lipgloss and possibly more conditioning for the lips?

All in all, I love that Sleek is a bit different to usual high-street ranges... It's affordable, great packaging, lots of different colours etc. I do think the quality is variable though - and ends up having quite a 'stage make-up' feel to it i.e. I'm not sure how wearable a lot of the range is for everyday (like I say, unless you wear quite bold looks on a day to day basis - which you might well do - I don't know!)

jjwhite · 26/03/2015 11:45

p.s. sorry for essay length reply (!) - and I completely agree with previous poster - they are basically like MAC but more affordable, and IMHO without the solid, decent basics (foundations, concealer etc.) that MAC also has in its arsenal...

I tried the highlighting trio and a blush and I didn't like them at all, poor pigment and full of glitter. I'm surprised to see good reviews here

daftyburd · 26/03/2015 12:00

My sister has the eyebrow kit. It's a dupe for my Benefit Brow Zing at a fraction of the price. Friend uses the contouring kit and looks great but I feel I am too pale to give it a go.

jjwhite · 26/03/2015 12:19

I didn't find the highlighting trio that i tried was poorly pigmented - the bronzer especially was decently pigmented - but I definitely agree it was full of glitter (especially the rose gold blush). I am quite pale though, so maybe on a darker skin the pigmentation wouldn't hold up...?

Enormouse · 26/03/2015 12:40

I like sleek. As said before, it's a MAC dupe. And I think it's tailored for darker skin (I'm Indian).

I like the blushers and the lipsticks.

CoconutAmericano · 26/03/2015 12:45

I like their eyeshadow palettes. I have 'naturel' and 'storm' and they have high pigmentation so last all day. Their bronzer is good too, if a little strong. I do think it was originally designed with dark skin in mind although I am very fair, my face can take strong colours. The only real negative for me is the quality of the packaging is poor. Both my palettes have broken and although they still close they aren't terribly secure now.

Carpaccio · 26/03/2015 12:48

I have only used their eye shadows and blushers.

They are generally very pigmented so you'll have to be quite light handed when applying.
The eye shadows can have some fallout when applying (which could be down to how pigmented they are). There are a few colours that aren't as good as others, but it is one colour in a 12 colour palette so it doesn't bother me massively.
I have nothing negative to say about the blushers, there are colours very similar to blushers from Mac and Nars and probably other brands, and the quality really does compare to higher end brands. Again, just be careful when applying as they are very pigmented.

jjwhite · 26/03/2015 12:53

Oh yeah, CoconutAmericano has reminded me - I also had two eye shadow palettes - I think possibly exactly the same ones as her (Storm and Au naturel). They were really pigmented and great range of colours (amazing for the price...) I personally didn't find a problem with the packaging - it certainly looks really luxe and after having them for well over a year they're still going strong. That said, admittedly I don't use them everyday, so maybe they don't stand up to more robust use...

UnderEstherMate · 26/03/2015 12:56

I like be their liquid eyeliner and their contouring kit. They also have some great eye shadows. Foundation is a bit on the heavy side for me though.

Lottapianos · 26/03/2015 12:57

I had two of their lipsticks. The lighter colours (Fuchsia) is fine and I'm happy with it. The dark colour (Cherry) used to bleed like hell every time I wore it, even after prepping lips with lipliner and using a lip brush to apply. I had to bin it.

swooosh · 26/03/2015 13:52

I really like them. The eyeshadow palettes are great, as is the highlighting/contour palette and the liquid eyeliner.

Lynne2015 · 26/03/2015 14:01

I have 2 blushers and they are fab, Lifes a Peach & Flushed.
I used to use Laura Mercia but someone told me about Sleek and I am glad they did, it is so cheap and worth every penny

Thanks everyone, good feedback there. I've blonde hair and fair-medium skin tone (more yellow-toned than pink-toned). I suppose I'll get a better idea when I call in and test some of the products. At my age I definitely don't want glitter settling into my age laughter lines!

I have to agree with Jackie0 that I'm surprised to see such good reviews. Unfortunately I haven't got on with any of the Sleek products other than their Brow Kit which seems to have lasted forever!
I know people do go crazy for their 'Matte Me' lip glosses though.
I have tried their concealer palette which I found greasy to apply and just sat on top of my skin and into the lines under my eyes (I'm 22 so you can't even see these 'lines' otherwise!). Have also tried their contour palette which I didn't think was great, and also the blusher didn't have much pigment in at all.
So all in all a thumbs down from me unfortunately!

RL20 · 26/03/2015 15:23

Oh and I also had one of their lip palettes but I found them poorly pigmented and very greasy.
Sorry to put a downer on the thread but just being honest as to how I found the brand
By the way I'll add that my skin type is combination but more on the dry side

caramal · 01/04/2015 16:44

I really like sleek and use several of their products.
As another person said I think sleek is great for darker skin tones.
I'm dark skinned, I love the blushers, the lipsticks are good (cherry and vamp)
The pallettes of eye shadows are highly pigmented, contain a good variety.
The contour kit too works really well too
I have tried their foundations, but prefer my usual brand.

MooMinCow · 01/04/2015 17:29

Another dark skinned fan here. The blushes might look garish in the pan but translate really well on my skin (apart from the Rose Gold 'Nars Orgasm dupe' which looked yellow gold on me)

The contour kit (the duo, not the one with blush) is a great contour shade for darker skin. I wouldn't use it as a bronzee as the undertones are wrong for that?

Eyeshadows are great, but do need a primer underneath. Didn't like the lipstick I tried (very patchy), and not tried any foundation etc. although their luminous pressed powder is lovely and might work as a bronzer for lighter skins?

macnab · 01/04/2015 21:10

Well it turned out to be a bit of a damp squid after all that, I high-tailed it to the chemist and all they have is a teeny tiny display at their till with the contour kits Confused

I bought the light one and I like it, the rosegold blush is lovely so I am pleased with that but utterly disappointed otherwise. Was looking forward to browsing, it was over in about 5 seconds Grin

I have 2 eye pallete (Naturel and Vintage) lovely colours for my eyes , last well
2 lip pallettes (Ballet and Tease)- I'm not a lippie fan but I like these. I can blend any shade from these
Blusher (Rose Gold - too sparkley)

Didn't like the mascara

DD has the concealer (2 shades+a setting powder) she likes it.

Most of the displays I've seen have Out of Stock in them

VillaVillekulla · 02/04/2015 10:12

I use the CC cream and the eyebrow palette.
