My lovely blonde hair has gradually darkened over the years so now I'm mousey with quite a few grey highlights. My new hair dresser suggested a half head of blonde foil highlights. However I'm not keen on the idea, plus I'm reluctant to go down the regular highlights route (cost & time).

I fancied maybe going more brown / copper, as I think it looks lovely and shiny if your hair is in good condition. Are there any good wash in colours that I could try at home, that would fade, just in case I don't like it. Im looking for something like the shaders / toners that we used buy in the 80's, that's the only colour I have ever been brave enough to use.

If you are a colour novice, I would try the hairdresser route! You can get semi permanent colours there that fade out. It would then be easier to do a shade yourself on top. I haven't had my natural colour for 26 yrs, and currently have peroxide hair, and have used home colourants and hairdresser hair colour.

There is a shampoo with colour in it that washes out in up to three washes by Superdrug. It is messy though and doesn't deposit much colour. It comes off on pillow cases too.

If you like the look of your hair warmed up than Loreal Casting in Amber would make your hair copper-toned. It is a semi so will fade although not entirely due to the developer part of the dye.

Lush Henna might be worth a shot. It makes hair super glossy, but again fades with time. On the plus side it never trashes the hair.

what about something like this?

Thanks for the suggestions - does the Lush Henna make hair very red or is it subtle ?
