So true.

I think I hate mine. It's in a bob. It's supposed to look like Sienna Miller's hair, but it doesn't. It looks like a hat.

I was trying to grow out my fringe, but it makes me look old/like my Nana. I think I need a fringe to cover my scowl lines.

I feel miserable and unglamourous.

I have loads of pins on Pinterest, and I'd like to try something new, but more than that, I just want something that suits me, rather than trying to style my hair in a way that just doesn't suit me.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you looked at trying on new hairstyles/colours on taaz? You upload a pic then see how different styles look. Can't link on phone but you can Google it.

You'd probably be best off talking to a good hairdresser though, taaz doesn't take lifestyle, hair types etc into account.

goshhhhhh · 24/03/2015 19:48

Ask your hairdresser.

I just got my Bob & most of my colour cut out (now more silver than anything else). Got lots of comments that it makes me look younger. My hairdresser made me brave.

Paintedpinksapphires · 24/03/2015 19:48

Step away from Pinterest. Sienna Miller's hair suits her. Unless you are her twin sister you need something that suits you.

Get yourself to a really good hairdresser and ask for a consultation. Generally speaking they know what they are doing and what looks good.

burnishedsilver · 24/03/2015 19:53

I could have written your post. I've gone from long hair to a bob and I feel like I've suddenly become a middle aged frump. I'm growing it back.

Stillill · 24/03/2015 19:59

Wise words from Morrissey!

I was thinking of a bob a la Caroline Flack but it won't suit my face. I did spend a painful 6/8 months growing out my fringe and am glad I persevered now.

If it's a bob that looks like a hat then maybe it's too neat? Sienna is a bit messy looking. Is it naturally straight/curly? Do you straighten?

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 24/03/2015 20:09

Stillill - I just know we'd get on seeing as we have a common thread in our names!

Yes - mine's more Caroline Flack than Sienna, really. Darker, straighter. Though it's not dead straight, and if I try to put any kind curl in it, it doesn't last long and looks messy but not in a good way.

I think Cat Deely also said about spending money on your hair, because you wear it every day! I had mine chopped from below shoulder length to a pixie cut two years ago, and had it bleached last year. For the first time in my life I felt that I had found 'my' hair. I have got so many more compliments, feel so confident. it also suits my hair type (straight/fine) and my features (small). But believe me I am definitely not a stunning gamine!

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 24/03/2015 22:05

Lovewearingjeans I'd love to have a pixie. Maybe I'll take the plunge when I've lost a bit of weight.

Yours sounds lovely. It must be good when you find 'your' hair.

I am a bit stunned that 3 weeks after having had the chop I now feel I have found my hair. Had a pixie to chop off the dye and let the grey come through. Has taken a few weeks to get used to it (had bob or long curly hair for 30 years) but now absolutely love it.

You do absolutely, totally completely need a good hair stylist. Someone who will look at your hair, how it grows, what is naturally wants to do, your hair line, your face shape, how much time you want to spend on it. These can be trickier to find than you think. I used to say to my (previous) hairdresser "I am bored/want a change/don't know what to do with it". She would come back with not much really. I may get a slight tweak on the old style - but no real suggestions. I took the plunge and went to a salon in London with a stylist recommended on here. (Though my pixie was supposed to be just short term and always planning on growing it out - so was always a bit of a "fuck-it-it-will-always-grow" risk.). I love, love, love it now. I have cut that 100% suits my face. You can see my cheekbones. My eyes. The cut is designed to suit what my hair does naturally (ie my cowlick enhances the style rather than me trying to fight it).

If your current hairdresser is not filling you with the confidence that they can take you on a new journey (sounds poncy but ykwim) then find someone else.

I would suggest you pluck up the courage to get recommendations. Anyone's who has hair that is a bit different but fab - ask them. Maybe classically cut but looks fantastic. Really suits their face. Not necessarily like your hair - but just an obviously good cut. Tbh non-frumpy pixies styles - look for them - and ask them.

OttiliaVonBCup · 24/03/2015 22:22

My hair is lovely.
My life however is currently a fucking nightmare.

OttiliaVonBCup · 24/03/2015 22:23

My point is, too bad is doesn't work the other way round.

Milllli · 24/03/2015 22:55

Can we see your hair.....please? I like Siennas cut.

cerealqueen · 24/03/2015 22:58

Well it certainly helps! I've just gone a shade blonder and feels its 'me'. The cut isn't quite right though, so need a trim so its wash and wear for summer, not wash and blow dry.

RonaldMcDonald · 24/03/2015 23:46

A hat. Glam school mum started rocking hats, we all perked up. Turned out it was just terrible hair. 4-6 weeks and you're done. She arsed about with scarves etc too

WilburIsSomePig · 25/03/2015 06:04

I've just had mine cut a bit like this, but a tiny bit shorter. Colour is light copper which is very different for m . Have never had so many compliments on may hair in my life, which is nice!

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 25/03/2015 14:06

I'm not sure I know how to upload a photo on MN. Or if I am brave enough.

Funny quote! My hair does give me some joy so I'm inclined to agree with it! I'd suggest you get some advice from a hairdresser. Mine have always confirmed that what I'm doing is the best thing, i.e. that I suit longer hair in a style that enhances the natural wave. I've tried pixie cuts and bobs and they really don't suit me at all and are much harder to style with my hair type.

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 25/03/2015 15:01

I've not really any problem with my hairdresser. I like and trust her. I just don't think this style works. When I had a bob (traditional) a couple of years ago, one side behaved, the other didn't and would kick out as it's not dead straight. I thought this current style would suit it as it likes to do its own thing, but I think it's just a bit too blunt. It's also a bit of a weird length: shorter or longer would probably be OK.

I also had it ombred last summer, which I liked to start with, but (and this might sound strange) it didn't suit me in winter with my winter clothes. And my Mum didn't like it either. I can tell she doesn't like my hair now because she hasn't commented on it. Not that I should let that bother me, being in my 40s. Grin

xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 15:17

I have a bob, which I love. I think it can suit anyone.

If your hair tends to misbehave, why not take the plunge and get a modern perm? I loved mine - doesn't need to be granny/80s at all. I used to wake up in the morning, run my fingers through that was it. No fuss - great waves. You can get digital perms these days, they sound pretty good. It did make my hair a bit dry, but with some deep conditioning it is fine.

Wavy bobs are so flattering.

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 25/03/2015 16:31

I posted on here a month or so ago about perms, but didn't get much of a response other than I should get a blue rinse, too Grin

OP posts:
xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 17:13

Haha, no way! Perms are fab - just make sure you look after it. I had mine done at Andrew Barton's salon, they're perm experts and did a really good job. It was just so much easier with a perm.

SuperFlyHigh · 25/03/2015 18:57

Whatever suits you suits you. I have long hair past bra straps layered at back and small side fringe. Amazing highlights due to good colorist. When I grew it back from shoulder/just below recently everyone commented as to how nice it was - it's been this length before. Won't let anyone chop it again!
