What do you wear on your feet in the summer if you don't like strappy sandals?

This seems to be a never ending problem since Dr Martens stopped making anything remotely attractive Sad

I am fairly active and really not particularly decorative, and therefore don't like wearing skinny little sandals with beads etc and very flat soles. Toe posts make my toes hurt too.

I like a thicker sole, comfortable for walking, a bit like a shoe but with some space for my feet to breathe Smile probably involving some buckles and so on.

Tried saltwater - too flat, though better than some, and didn't fit properly.

I can't find anything that's not either very decorative or very erm, not sure how to put this but those ones that monks wear.

Has anyone found a happy medium?

I have a foot phobia which includes my own feet in open shoes so I live in Skechers Gowalks in the summer, not the most stylish thing but breathable and comfy.

Birkies are too wide for me but I need a built up arch support.
I can't even look at the thin shiney flat soled sandles, my feet would wince.

the best ones I had were a wedge solem three buckle straps across the forefoot (which I had to punch more holes in) . I bought 2 pairs. Still looking for similar.

Last year I wore Converse .

I've had some really nice ones from FlyFlot (Italian brand so some come up narrow) or M&S

oh, those look nice Chewbacca

Pumpkinette · 22/03/2015 18:27

I've have these. 6 years on they are still going strong

nowitsenough · 22/03/2015 18:34

Have you tried the narrow Birkies? They do the Madrid style in narrow. I have quite narrow feet and find the regular size too wide. I buy them online from a german shop and they are cheaper than Amazon and free postage, arrived in 2-3 working days. They had a lot more stock too, as not many stock the narrow sizes. I'll try and find the website ..

I love Josef Seibel shoes.

Bought something similar to this a few years ago and they are still going strong. I hate open toed sandals also.

Also, have a pair of flowery canvas ballerina type shoes from t -reds. (They have a sale one to the moment)

This is the website for the German shop selling Birkenstock sandals.

Rivercam · 22/03/2015 18:40

The second link hasn't worked. Google The Golden Boot (superb shoe shop) and Josef Seibel to find the range. I think I have the Amanda shoes.

Psipsina · 22/03/2015 18:41

I like the Fly treu ones actually, which leaves me with a dilemma!

Thank you for all the very good suggestions - the German link is great, I might go for that too. Flowers

I was really pleased with the speed they sent the Birkenstocks and the colours they had in stock. I paid £30 I think.

MissStoHelit · 23/03/2015 09:33

I have these. They're extremely comfortable and, while they're never going to win prizes for their beauty, I have had lots of compliments on them! They go well with jeans, shorts, and trousers, but in retrospect I should have bought the flowery tan pair as they'd have gone better with dresses.

Psipsina · 23/03/2015 10:06

Do you know what, I've been staring at those for a while wondering if they are nicer in real life!

Thank you - I might go and try some on.

Birkies Mayari style, usually in white. So so so comfortable and supportive. I don't think they're particularly beautiful but I always get compliments.

I also wear Sam Edelman Gigis for dressier summer dressing down. Amazingly comfy given how flat they look (there is some hidden padding).

Occasionally flip flops, but I find my feet can slide around too much.

Also skate shoes if it's raining or don't want open toes. I've also got a few pairs of Converse but have gone off them a bit as so flat.

Selks · 23/03/2015 12:07

I have these Art Company sandals, they are fantastically comfortable.

wildone81 · 23/03/2015 15:00

have you tried Dr Marten sandals -

BeCool · 23/03/2015 16:15

you seem to be needing some Birkenstocks OP?

MissStoHelit · 23/03/2015 18:08

Psipsina - I'd say they're worth a look. I didn't like them in red or pink, but the black and tan pairs both looked good when I tried them on. Mine are a size 5 and don't look clompy, but the straps are still substantial enough to keep my feet well covered. They're also very, very, very comfortable!

Mine are black and still look brand new, despite having been worn daily last summer for a very physical job. If I hadn't already blown my clothing budget for this year, I'd seriously be considering buying the tan ones as well!

RoganJosh · 23/03/2015 21:02

Ooh, ooh, what about Fit flops?
