So: culottes. Are we doing them?

I rather love these and they've got 20% off. But will I look silly?

I'm 36, 5'7, size 10-12, slight but not-too-bad baby tummy.

I think they look more like a skirt on the model. Obviously she's a mega-babe Envy

Anyone out there contemplating a culotte purchase?

I like these too, more structured.

Like both those, Judy (did you used to be judysdreamhorse or was that someone else?).

Right, ladies: I'm going in. I'll report back.

No, that wasn't me Daphne - I'm quite new. Report back, soldier.

lavenderhoney · 20/03/2015 19:02

My dd wears gym skorts as she hates shorts and its a compromise for pe:)

I would want to see what I looked like from behind wearing floaty culottes.

I think i prefer Capri pants.

DaphneMoonCrane · 20/03/2015 19:09

I have quite a small rear end, so I'm not so worried about that.

My muffin top, on the other hand... Shock

Daphnia you have been saved from a fashion disaster. Take this as a sign - it wasn't meant to be Grin

squoosh · 20/03/2015 20:07

The internet has sent you a message Daphne. Heed that message.

alittleegglayonaleaf · 20/03/2015 20:11

love culottes, so chic

DaphneMoonCrane · 20/03/2015 20:11

That means hundreds of size 10-12 spotty culotted people will be roaming the country this summer. Angry

I always thought that culottes were more flowy, like a skirt (like the first link). Otherwise, if they look like cut-off work trousers, the they're just cut-off work trousers. I want something floaty-light, like a skirt, but must be knee length for work, and with some material between my legs.

SanityClause · 20/03/2015 20:35

I saw someone wearing some at the theatre last night. They were a bit wrappy-roundy, and looked lovely. Not very helpful, I know, but I'll have a bit of a hunt for them.

LoveVintage · 20/03/2015 22:44

I used to wear culottes in the eighties. I had a black heavy crepe pair and a navy pair with white spots. That was back in the days when I could wear tucked in tops.

courgettesoup · 21/03/2015 00:57

Took my long denim culottes out for a spin tonight (DC call them my clown trousers). They are completely ridiculous but I enjoyed wearing them. They need a seriously clumpy shoe to balance proportions.

louwn · 22/03/2015 10:46

I have the second warehouse pair that Judy linked. Masses of compliments when I wore them to work the other day. Do think you def have to be tall and slim to pull off though, and wear heels.

niminypiminy · 22/03/2015 12:49

Tbh I've never known a fashion trend to come along where people have said 'you really need to be short and dumpy and wear flat shoes to pull this one off'. So I shall, as usual, ignore all warnings about being tall and slim and wearing high heels. Otherwise I'd never go out of the house. Waiting for payday and then will look at a pair of severe culottes to be warn with my new silver trainers.

NoRockandRollFun · 22/03/2015 19:31

niminy same here! I wear mine with trainers or DMs. I have my eye on some silver flatforms for summer. Defo not tall and slim.

niminypiminy · 22/03/2015 20:55

high fives NoRockandRollFun silver flatforms are on my summer shopping list too. With culottes Smile

fiorentina · 22/03/2015 21:26

I've got some shorter and longer length ones. I wear the shorter ones for work and the longer ones more casually. I get lots of compliments at work and think I've made them look smart enough for a city job..

PoppyAmex · 22/03/2015 21:40

I've said this before, but Mum dressed me in culottes when I was a child in the '80s, much like every other kid in Continental Europe.

No excuse then or now. They are unspeakable, especially when they fall just below the knee.

NormHonal · 22/03/2015 21:42

Nope, I "did" culottes as a skinny teenager and they looked shit then, still look shit now.

DaphneMoonCrane · 22/03/2015 22:23

Skorts? Flatforms? Let's call the whole thing off... Grin

OP posts:
SuperFlyHigh · 22/03/2015 22:25

poppy same with me but think late 70s, I hated them then!

PoppyAmex · 22/03/2015 22:27

Well at least for once this isn't a fashion moment that only suits tall, skinny models; they look equally bad in any body type.

I suppose at least that makes them democratic Grin

NoRockandRollFun · 23/03/2015 09:09

Hmm. Sometimes I think fashion is not just about looking nice/wearing something that suits/is in proportion to your size/doesn't make you look too fat etc. Sometimes it's just fun to wear something totally different for the hell of it.
