Help - tights that don't dig in at the waist

SweetieTime · 18/03/2015 15:40

I am in need of comfy tights. Do they exist in the real world??? I have recently returned to work from mat leave and as time is limited on a morning invested in a new work wardrobe of a couple of dresses rather than having to find matching, clean, ironed bottoms and tops every morning. I hadn't anticipated the tights issue.

So where can I get tights that fit my short legs that don't dig in my ample waist? Does such a thing exist? I currently feel like a rolled pork joint waiting for the string to be snipped.

I am 5ft 3 and size 14 but with very little waist, lost that somewhere in my pregnancy I think.

TIA for any help, tips or links.

Suspenders?

IfNotNowThenWhen · 18/03/2015 15:49

Just take a pair of sharp scissors and...snip! Snip down an inch on either side. And relax!

LondonRocks · 18/03/2015 15:50

If you cut them, they'll ladder, surely?!

SirVixofVixHall · 18/03/2015 15:58

I think tights are often ridiculously small on the waist. I am tall so buy the large size anyway, but still find them too tight (I'm a size 12) and I hate that digging in feeling. I would have to be my old size 8 to not find most tights too small. So what tights do bigger people buy?

vvviola · 18/03/2015 16:02

I buy the biggest size tights I can find. I'm a size 16/18 but I usually buy XXL - or the size for either size 20/22 at my height, or size 16/18 for a much shorter person. I also never ever buy the "waist slimming" type. Bound to cause untold agony.

PetiteBateau · 18/03/2015 16:43

I wear m&s tights & they don't cut in, they have quite a deep waistband which is what stops them from cutting in like some tights do.

Stillachristmastree · 18/03/2015 17:16

M & S magicwear 60 denier black opaques £6 are my best friend Smile!

The only ones I'll wear.

They are to smooth bum, tum and waist so come up to just under bra.

So smooth and flattering and comfortable .

I'm a size 14 and I have to buy xxl as their neat on my thighs otherwise.

I wear them under leggings also to smooth and so I don't get dreaded see through leggings .

IfNotNowThenWhen · 18/03/2015 17:56

Nope they don't ladder if you only cut the waistband.

xiaozhu · 18/03/2015 18:09

I snip the waistband in the front of mine, a couple of inches down the seam does the trick. My tights are the thick black ones though - not sure if that would work on low dernier nudes...

LondonRocks · 18/03/2015 18:49

Thanks for the snip tipSmile

DaftSkunk · 18/03/2015 18:55

I have tried many different brands and Asda are brilliant. I can't recommend them highly enough. Granted I've only tried opaques (60 and 80 denier) but they are bloody fab. 3 pairs for £4 (60 denier) and £5 (80 denier) I'm a 16 and buy xl - they don't cut in and they stay up really well.

Howaboutthisone · 18/03/2015 18:56

Another vote for M and S tights. The 60 denier body sensor /3d waist/ any really in large. I'm 5 ft nearly 4 and a 14

SweetieTime · 18/03/2015 19:10

Seems I am not alone with my tights issue. I will try the snip technique on the tights I already have. I do have the M&S ordinary ones and I still have the same problem. I think I may not be buying them big enough as I usually get a medium for fear of rocking a Nora Batty look.

I will have a look at the M&S shaper or other varieties in a bigger size. I am hoping to find these more comfy.

I don't pull them up as far as the waist, just the hips. Doesn't seem to cause an excess of fabric in wrong place or make them fall down!

skylerwhite1 · 18/03/2015 19:16

hold ups? just don't use body lotion on your legs before putting them on.

Bolshybookworm · 18/03/2015 19:52

Hold ups have a habit of falling down halfway through the day on me. Normally at a highly embarrassing moment Blush

I have same issue with tight strangulation and my waist is 10-12. I think it was an issue even when I had a (sob) size 8 waist- it's just the way tights are made. The flip side is when you get a pair with a looser waist band and they spend most of the day round your knees. You can't win.

2 words though- maternity tights. I still wear some of mine (baby is over a year old!), they're just so darn comfy! Half tempted to buy some more.

You've just brought back nightmares of standing on steps of very important public building waiting for very important person to arrive (& then having to subtly sprint upstairs to organise meeting details) all while desperately clutching on to hold up that had failed. Never again.

So, yeah, I'd advise against hold ups Grin

I like m and s autograph tights generally. And I'm a 12 but buy a large every time.

MrsSkinnyLegs · 18/03/2015 23:33

I second IfNotNowThenWhen's tip to circumnavigate the sausage tied with string feeling. Have snipped my tights for YEARS, ever since I was a flabless teen. Works perfectly.
