Hair dye that actually dyes grey hair!

Usual story - have some grey, been dying it for years etc etc. Some brands work better than others but for a while I've been finding Perfect 10 to give the best coverage. Alas, it has been discontinued. So I've tried L'Oreal Preference. My god, two weeks on and it looks like it actually removed colour from my hair. It un-dyed it. If that's even possible!

So what products out there work? Anyone tried Vidal Sassoon Salonist? Is it any good?

Watching with interest - if a manufacturer could make something that would really dye the stubborn greys it would be great.

sincitylover · 16/03/2015 17:52

have tried the vidal Sassoon twice - the first time I thought it was very good but the second time not so sure. Use the root touch up but think that's overpriced and also L'Oreal preference which I thought was better than most!

PragmaticWench · 16/03/2015 17:54

Well don't bother with John Frieda 'Precision foam colour' as it makes the grey in my dark brown hair just go a very light, mousy brown. Rubbish!

Petallic · 16/03/2015 17:58

I haven't used the Vidal Sassoon but I do have bionic greys and which I find nice & easy covers well. Although I do always leave on a little longer than the box says -30mins for the roots and then an extra 5mins with the last of the colour run through to the ends.

The only colour I have found (and I think I have tried everything now) is Aldi. I have white hairs that refuse to be coloured with everything I have tried except Aldi. I also have to go a shade lighter so that new growth is less noticable.

I used to use Nice'n'Easy but found that it wasn't colouring the grey that well and that it was washing out out fairly quickly. I'm starting to think it's my hair that's the problem.

I was wondering if the Nice'n'easy Age defy might work better because of the pretreatment, but the online reviews were mixed and I chickened out of buying it.

I use John Frieda foam stuff but the last couple of times it hasn't fully dealt with the greys along my parting more separated them off into a frizzy halo Sad . Think I need to accept that I've moved onto the next level of greyness and need a new approach. But what?

PurpleWithRed · 16/03/2015 18:18

L'oreal Excellence works for me.

YoureMyWifeNowDave · 16/03/2015 18:23

This is why I stopped bothering trying to get a hair colour that looks natural.

Instead I have had my hair cropped short and let the semi permanent colour I was using grow out (I stopped using permanent colour about 2 years ago as I was getting mild reactions to them and didn't want to have a full blown allergic reaction).

I am currently experimenting with non permanent colour and at the moment have pink streaks Grin

After a certain stage I think you have to bow to the inevitable and go professional .I used Nice and Easy for years (my natural colour was very dark brown with reddish tinge) but eventually ...(It's also a lot less messy and more ' convincing' -though obviously also a lot more expensive, sadly) I do find Charles Worthington new spray on root colour is good on my parting, which delays a re colour for a week or so

AgathaF · 16/03/2015 18:24

This stuff (but not necessarily this colour Grin) is brill. It lasts around a month on my fairly grey hair. Leaves it in great condition too.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 16/03/2015 18:29

I would buy a proper professional colour and 30% peroxide and mix it yourself, equal amounts of each. It's the best coverage. I use the one my hairdresser uses in between visits.

KissyBoo · 16/03/2015 18:46

None of the high street ones work for me anymore and Majirel with 30vol is also just washing off the temples within a couple of days so I'm going natural.

Pisghetti · 16/03/2015 18:53

Perfect 10 is being discontinued Shock as soon as I saw this title in active threads I hopped on to recommend it. Wonder how much I can stockpile before DP decides I have a problem.....

LemonYellowSun · 16/03/2015 20:07

I use Schwarzkopf colour mask and works for me. I would recommend it for coverage and the thickness of it making use easy.

I used to use John Frieda foam one but it's too drippy.

PragmaticWench · 17/03/2015 10:46

Clara, which professional one would you recommend? There's a hairdressing warehouse near me for professionals, so I could go there for dye...

IHavemyownLighthouseyouknow · 17/03/2015 11:32

L'Oreal Excellence is the only one which works for me. Nice & Easy just doesn't cover the greys properly and their shade 4 is always a tad too ginger.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 17/03/2015 12:55

I like Wella Illumina or Goldwell. You'll get a huge big bottle of peroxide that will last ages. Get a proper hair dye applicating brush and a wee tub. I don't measure, just tip in equal amounts. You don't need that much for roots. Good luck OP!

Lynne2015 · 20/03/2015 11:09

I have about 40% grey hair and my natural hair is brown, I use red henna
its amazing the grey is an amzing red colour and the brown is shiny.

my hairdressers always say that it looks fab and it looks like i have had highlights, it is not a block of colour its all different.

i will try and post a pic to show you

Kennington · 20/03/2015 17:57

I find leaving the dye on 10 mins longer than recommended, around 45 mins then washing in conditioner for a couple of days then using a no sulphate shampoo. I use preference and have 50 percent grey and this works well.

paddingtonbear1 · 20/03/2015 19:24

Another vote for L'oreal Excellence. Have tried others but they didn't work very well.
