Having another crack at going grey......

KissyBoo · 13/03/2015 15:11

After even Majirel failing to tint my temples and 3/4 of my hairline I am taking the plunge again. It bloody ridiculous that 30vol peroxide is unable to do the job.

On the plus side I have the colouring to pull it off and my hair is super strong so it's probably going to look striking. I might have a bit of a Mallon going on with salt and pepper through the rest.

I already have a pixie so should be through the other end in four months. I love silver hair but what I hate is the transitioning part as the dye washes off and it gets brassier as the badger grows. I have a light cool skin tone, black is my best colour and I really suit matte red lipstick and silver jewellery. I really don't suit any warmth in my hair so struggle with the blorange crapness. Any tips from those who have done it?

Anyone else currently fecking off the hair dye?

Me Grin but you may remember me from my thread the other week. Am really glad I am doing it. Still got some "warm brown" at the ends - but blended in with some highlights so the inch of regrowth is not too noticeable

Can you not get the colour removed?

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2015 18:38

I'd strip the colour with a couple of lots of ColourB4 and then take any brassiness out with a dose of Manic Panic virgin snow

GobblersKnob · 13/03/2015 18:44

I've done it, I love it. It thought I was going to keep it in a pixie which is how I have had it for the last eighteen months. But I love the colour so much I am now growing it.

doctorboo · 13/03/2015 18:47

I've had enough of icolouring my hair, so after 20 years of doing it it I'm about to ask my SIL (hairdresser) what's the best thing/way to do it (and still look decent ;) )as I've had enough of it looking great for the first week(s) post home dye job and then the roots revealing my, quite obvious, amount of grey and not covering it all in the first place.
I can't pull off anything shorter than chin length, so that's quite a few months of growing out to put up with...I imagine she'll say something about highlights or lowlights or wash in/out colour to tide things over?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/03/2015 18:54

I'm 2.5 years in and still growing it out I want to keep my hair long. Not too much more to go. I can't wait!

Thanks for all the replies Flowers

Because I have had to dye it so much it wouldn't be worth stripping it all out as it would be Easter Chick yellow underneath and too porous to take a toner. I think what I need is one of those root touch up pens until I am through the worst (ie looking bald where the white is coming in at the scalp for the first half inch) but I want to be sure they don't stain/flake. Anyone used anything they can recommend? Would it be better to just to tin hat it?

Chop- of course I remember and your transformation has given me the spur I needed! Smile

Hmmmmm...just had my first wobble. I have just had a shower so wet hair and have not really bothered styling it really - tis just damp and a bit mussy. I thought it looked quite good and was going to see how it dried to get another variation for styling.

DS (6yo)just came in from the garden they are camping out there with DH..don't ask...all bloody madness if you ask me. He looked at my hair and asked "What have you done Mummy? Have you have your hair changed colour again?" I replied "No, it is just wet." Waited for the compliment....and.....

"Oh. It is grey there." and he walked out of the room. Er..yes...that grey bit at the front has been grey for 2 weeks!!!

I always knew he was the most unobservant child in the world. This has just confirmed it. Grin

I am actually really enjoying the white/grey bits as the pattern becomes more apparent. Think my wish for a Caryn Franklin is not going to happen ie I am more white than I thought. I am hoping the pattern is going to be OK and fingers crossed I can aim for something like Paola Marella (hairwise, will never be as beautiful). It was images of both of these that finally convinced me you could look glorious with grey.

I am feeling the loss of the curls a bit. Feel a bit shorn/butch at times (I know, crap) but think I have worked out that a lot of my clothes are quite plain - very few patterns - as the curls were the "fussy/feminine" bit of me iyswim and so before I felt overwhelmed with patterns etc. Now I do not have the fruffy curls I need to add something to replace them.

I am overall though totally, totally delighted that I had the chop. I am relieved to have got off the dye treadmill - still a bit to chop off but not having the roots issue at all.

I am also enjoying having the pixie - that too is quite liberating. That is is a bit of a shock/change to lose length...but it is only hair. And it is fun and a challenge to suddenly have to learn how to style it - utterly different ball game.

CliveCussler · 13/03/2015 21:22

Me too. I just cant afford the highlights anymore. Unfortunately I don't really have the right colouring as I'm naturally dark blonde.

Shoulder length hair with layers and I'm only an inch and a half in so a long way to go yet.

ChopOrNot · 13/03/2015 21:23

Oh and I used to use this www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000TC0NIS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage They do various colours so one may suit. And is pretty cheap so if no good you will not have wasted a huge amount.

I used to use it just on the parting from about 3 weeks post dye - just broke up the badger line a bit. Only tended to use for a week or 10 days and then would have roots touched up - so cannot say whether it stains/impregnates hair though.

KissyBoo · 13/03/2015 21:37

Clive- some of the nicest transitions I have seen have been blondes. They end up with a lovely tonal shade whereby mine is going to be high contrast.

Thanks Chop- will go and look it up now. Re style stuff- treat yourself to some statement jewellery that is your taste to liven things up.

That's good to know Kissy. I've not had any comments either way yet. However, I'm seeing my mum on Sunday - I'm sure she'll have an opinion to voice Grin

ChopOrNot · 13/03/2015 22:09

I forgot my pics...if you are interested Grin

Thanks Chop- I went and looked up Paola Marella. She is stunning. What was really great though was finally finding someone with my grey patterning and how good it could look if I grew it out when transitioned.

What is your patterning like?
