What kind of shoes do you wear with smart/work trousers?

Picture a bog standard pair of black work trousers. Could be straight leg, bootcut or slim. What type of shoes go well? I've always struggled and I'm going back to work after nearly a year of mat leave so I want to look the part!

One problem - I'm 5'3" so should wear heels really but prefer not to, got a 20min walk to the office and no way I'll do that in heels, not wanting to change shoes every time I get to the office although I have done that in the past!

I wear trainers with suit trousers, silk shirt sleeved or sleeveless

Itwontletmenamechange · 12/03/2015 15:51

I wear trainers or boots to walk into work and keep a pair of basic black flats and heels under my desk. I almost always wear flats for comfort but most friends wear their heels. Then change at end of day to walk home.

minipie · 12/03/2015 15:52

Black shoe boots with a heel (I am also 5'3) but that's not too high or skinny. I generally get a pair every other winter and wear them to death. Last ones were from Clarks, others have been from Dune, can't remember where else!

Something a bit like this

This is on the boring/conservative end of things - I work in the City - so you might be able to go more funky depending on your job!

CointreauVersial · 12/03/2015 16:39

Depending on the weather, I wear:

Black mid-heel ankle boots (socks underneath)
Low- or mid-heel courts, various colours (no socks)
Sandals, either with a heel, or a wedge.

I rarely wear anything completely flat, although some of my court shoes are pretty low. Having said that, I don't have far to walk.

Flingmoo · 12/03/2015 16:44

Thanks! Are smart black flats okay with smart trousers in summer? Socks/tights or nothing?

I'd say so.

hiccupgirl · 12/03/2015 17:47

I wear lace up brogues with smart black trousers with black socks. I've got a pale cream pair and a greeny blue pair that both work well.

Otherwise boots. I'm 5ft 4 but don't ever do heels as I have a job where I'm out and about not at a desk all day.

Ballet flats as soon as the weather allows.
Always leather, in about a million different colours, some with bows, some with cut out detailing. Look in Jones the Bootmaker, they always have a good selection of shoes for work

Brookville · 12/03/2015 19:55

I second the brogues. I like their quirkiness. I've got gorgeous patent leather ones from
Clarks and a pair from Shoe Embassy.

fiorentina · 12/03/2015 20:00

I have some red pointy flats, black patent reasonably pointy court shoes, and some heels with ankle strap as well as some shoe boots, I like to mix it up. I do also wear dresses or skirts with ankle boots.

BikeRunSki · 12/03/2015 20:02

Brogues

hettie · 12/03/2015 21:13

Shoe boots in colder weather.. I have a pair of sueded ones from dune at the mo, but rather cover these
Warmer weather has been much harder tbh... My feet are very neurotic and anything that I could/would wear bare foot (or with those pop sock things) tend to to rub... I msut have tried 4-5 pairs over the years with endless plasters. I am hoping that these will be my saviour this year [sceptical]

HenriettaBarnet · 12/03/2015 21:38

always high heels at work - change when you get there. I think flats make most outfits look scruffy.

cropped trousers do look ok with pointy flats (maybe a little heel). but round ballet pumps look less smart imo.

I wear high heels in the summer
and ankle boots in the winter - but still high and fairly smart ones (my current ones are whistles and sam edelman black suede ones).

I don't wear boot cut or wide trousers - just slim ones.

I walk to work in trainers.

louwn · 13/03/2015 08:11

Lots of people at my work wear ballet flats but agree with Henrietta, they can look a bit casual with a smart outfit. Always heels - changing shoes at your desk is surely not that big a task?!

HmmAnOxfordComma · 13/03/2015 08:48

Pointy flats, brogues or wedge high heels.

Shoe boots are nice, too, but normal ankle boots with a bit of a heel - No way.

HenriettaBarnet · 13/03/2015 09:15

Hettie there's a compeed stick thing that you can rub on your feet - I find that really stops rubbing.
