What the bloody hell am I going to wear on my feet?

I really need some good recommendations; I broke my foot a few years ago and now can't wear heels at all, which isn't too much of a problem as I'm on my feet all day.

Generally at this time of year I like to wear ballet pump type shoes and in the summer live in flip flops, last summer my foot started really hurting again, was unbearable at some points. My gp suggested it might be my shoes, but sent me for an x ray, which showed that the bone has heeled a bit twisted, but short of breaking and resetting it there isn't much they can do.

All winter I've lived in boots and had no pain at all from my foot, the last 2 days I've worn ballet pumps and I'm in pain again.

Any stylish suggestions for some nice supportive summer shoes, I'm only 34 and really don't want to have to wear frumpy shoes!

TIA Smile

Can you bear to wear trainers? Plain all white or black ones coordinate with everything.
If not, brogues possibly but make sure they have a cushioned sole.
Ballet pumps are hell on the feet. I have dodgy knees from wearing them and converse for years.

SwedishEdith · 11/03/2015 20:21

I'd go for trainers as well.

NormHonal · 11/03/2015 20:24

Have a look at Skechers Go Walk range. They are very popular on here because they are super-comfy and very light.

They do a flip flop as well.

Not very stylish though, sorry!

NormHonal · 11/03/2015 20:25

Or (gulp) Crocs. Really - they have some styles that don't look like Crocs at all, but still very light and comfy.

gonegrey56 · 11/03/2015 20:27

Ecco shoes have cushioned insoles and are very supportive (and not too frumpy if you search the range). I sympathise as I too suffer after breaking an ankle a few years ago . I have also found the Fit Flop range of shoes and boots well worth the cost , I am convinced they helped the healing process .

candycrushhater · 11/03/2015 20:31

You have my sympathies, I broke my foot 3 years ago and finding shoes can be so difficult.

I've just bought these from BHS of all places. They are much nicer in real life and are very supportive.

Hotter (I know, I know!) have some half decent summer styles. Some are white-soled visions of God-awfulness but there's two or three bearable styles.

Myfanwyprice · 11/03/2015 20:50

Thank you so much for all the suggestions and sympathy, I think I was pretty naive when I did it and really didn't expect to still be suffering this long after the injury.

I love these, but am worried that I'm falling into the old trap and that they won't be any better for me. . .

I have all sorts of foot problems that I won't bore you with.
I wear Dr Martens ( my favourite), Fit Flops,Clarks Unstructured, Lands End sandals and Birkenstocks.

Are you thinking of getting your foot fixed by a surgeon? I had surgery 18 months ago (I'd developed a small piece of bone sticking out the back of my heel that meant I could only wear backless shoes - nightmare!) So I bit the bullet, had the op, which wasn't half as bad as expected, and I'm now totally back to normal.

You're too young to have such footwear restrictions OP!

Myfanwyprice · 11/03/2015 21:33

petal I haven't ruled out surgery, but I had put it to the back of my mind over the winter as the pain was so minimal when I was wearing boots all the time.

This week has really reminded me of how much I suffered last summer and so I am thinking now that maybe I should look into having the op done.

My mother always said ballet flats will kill your feet.

Can you feel a 1cm heel? 2cm? The same as in your boots?

For the past years ultra flat (ballet flats, converse, skater shoes, birkenstocks...) has been fashionable but they are no good for feet.
Right now there are more options, loafers and low block heels.

MrsMyrtleMarple · 11/03/2015 22:28

Frugal, why aren't Birkenstocks good for your feet? All the physios I work with wear them in the summer

hettie · 11/03/2015 22:30

What about the slightly heeled pointed loafers that are around at the moment?

What the bloody hell am I going to wear on my feet?
FrugalFashionista · 11/03/2015 23:24

mrsMyrtle we all have different feet. I used to work in an hospital, Birkies were not my thing, they felt too wide for my long and narrow feet. Mother found they weren't supportive enough. They are fantastic on many but not everyone and podiatrists seem to have varying opoinions.

Ponyphysio · 11/03/2015 23:29

Ballet pumps are really bad for all feet - ideally feet need foot shaped shoes, with support under the arch. Fit flops fit the bill, and they do shoes too, or you could get some orthotics to put into normal shoes. I sympathise cos I have the same issue with my foot after breaking it 2 summers ago. Good luck!

KissyBoo · 11/03/2015 23:48

I find Fly London low wedge shoes (oily sandals and piat shoes) wonderful.

Birkenstocks were awful for me.

JenniMoo · 12/03/2015 03:12

I have the hotter ones you linked and fund then really comfortable. They aren't entireky flat, as there's a slight slope, and feel like I'm wearing slippers. Definitely worry a try.

Thumbwitch · 12/03/2015 03:30

I suspect that it may be the thinness of the sole that is your undoing, OP - you need more cushioning than a ballet flat can provide. Also the lack of support won't help at all.

Birkenstocks work for some (obviously not all) so you could look into those; and have you looked at the Scholl range at all? I think Clarks shoe shops still sell them, don't they?

LadyB49 · 12/03/2015 07:52

I use Diaped insoles. They are expensive at 21.99 on Amazon but excellent. I have them even in my slippers.

They are too thick for some shoes and then I use the best thinner insoles I can find. Worth every penny.

Also I have some Clark's flats that look like pumps but are just a little more structured. They are a godsend and I have them in we use pink, taupe, black and burgandy. I even got an extra pair of the black and burgundy in the Outlet sale at 10 to have.
