I've lost 4.5 stone - get rid of large clothes?

Inspired by another thread on here, but I didn't want to hijack. I've lost just under 4.5 stone since the summer, with maybe another ten pounds to go to my target. When I had to do a rummage through my wardrobe for a formal work event last week, (assuming I would have something that was wearable, if belted, in from years ago) I realised that virtually everything I own is unwearable huge. I have bagged it all, with the idea of leaving it out for the local hospice shop collection. But is it naive to think I will never need those big clothes again, given that people do regain lost weight? Or would it be self-sabotage to keep some, as it would be setting myself up to regain?

I'd get rid of it. I think it's easier to let the weight creep back on if the clothes is already in the closet.

And congrats on losing weight! :)

caravanista13 · 11/03/2015 11:31

Well done! Definitely get rid of them - if you feel the weight starting to creep back you'll have much more incentive to get back on track. I lost 3.5 stone over 10 years ago - sometimes the odd half stone creeps back, but as soon as my clothes start to feel tight I know what I need to do!

SpicyBeat · 11/03/2015 11:36

Get rid. I've lost just over 3 stone so far and the vast majority of my old clothes are unwearably huge so I an imagine how much too big your's are.

I don't want them sitting there wasting space and waiting for me to grow into again. The way I see it, if I did get bigger again in the future (which I obviously hope not to!) the stuff will be well out of date by then anyway.

I'd get rid of them. It's true that a lot of people regain weight but keeping clothes just in case this happens seems a bit defeatist to me. Donating your old clothes and only giving wardrobe space to items that fit your current shape seems like a more positive outlook from which to continue as a slim person.

Well done, shedding 4.5 stone is no mean feat.

Tapwater · 11/03/2015 12:18

Thanks, everyone. My instinct (quite apart from physical space issues) says they need to go, but looking at them all laid out together on the bed was a very odd moment. Both making me think of how many years I had spent overweight, and also memories of wearing those clothes, and, in mercenary terms, how much they'd cost...

Get rid. I lost 4 stone a couple of years ago and threw out everything bar one pair of hideous jeans which remind me of everything I hated about being fat.

I did ebay lots though to raise money for new stuff!

SpicyBeat · 11/03/2015 12:37

The money they represent is more wasted clogging up your wardrobe than being used by charity. I take mine to the local charity shops and because I leave my details for Gift Aid, they write with updates on how much they have raised. I love getting those letters - leaves a nice warm glow!

Superherosidekick · 11/03/2015 13:14

Congratulations on your weight loss.

I suppose the harsh reality of the question as to whether you are being naïve to think you wont put it back on is that it depends how you lost the weight and whether you have made sustainable lifestyle changes that will mean you don't put if back on.

Having said that 4.5 stone is a substantial number of dress sizes so definitely get rid of the stuff you have - an excuse to buy new things! I have lost only a couple of dress sizes but I have still taken all my old things to the charity shop as caravanista says if they are gone then you cant let the weight creep back without confronting it.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 11/03/2015 13:34

get rid of them! I spent 10 years yo-yoing between sizes as they were all in my wardrobe, this time round as ive gone down a size I have got rid of everything that was too loose/big. It has definitely given me an incentive to stay on track. ive kept one dress to remind myself not to get that big again.

well done on the weight loss.

Totallyaddictedtoshoes · 11/03/2015 14:48

I got rid of all of mine, although I do wish I'd kept something just to remind me when I'm eyeing up the biscuits! Well done on your weight loss.

ClaudetteWyms · 11/03/2015 14:53

Well done on the weight loss - and yes, do get rid of them.

I lost 3.5 stone a couple of years ago and got rid of my big clothes (bar a couple of tops which look quite good baggy), it is lovely to have a wardrobe of much slimmer clothes!

I too occasionally put a few lbs back on and when my clothes start feeling tight I know to cut back on the grub and move around a bit more.

BsshBosh · 11/03/2015 15:40

Well done! I lost over six stones, got rid of all oversized clothes, never needed them again. Get rid!

WellTidy · 11/03/2015 15:44

Get rid. I am in the middle of getting rid of my post partum clotjhes, which are a dress size or so bigger than I am now. I am afraid that if I keep them, I will allow weight to creep on as I wouldn't be in the position of feeling that I needed to lose weight as I had nothing to wear. I am sending them all to the charity shop. I am also sending all the clothes that I had before I was pregannt, and was a size 8, as I also know that I am not going to be that size again either.

Well done on your weight loss.

toffeeboffin · 11/03/2015 15:52

Wow, congratulations!

Ditch the clothes.

Or maybe just keep a pair of jeans to remind yourself how big you once were and don't want to go back there.

Lardylassnomore · 11/03/2015 17:15

eBay them and buy something wonderful! Congrats on your weight loss. That's amazing!

scurryfunge · 11/03/2015 17:22

Well done! If you don't want to part with all of them, can you use the material for craft projects or even make them smaller so they will fit again if you like them? Depends if you are in to sewing though Smile
