Bright trainers: on-trend, or American tourist?

My thoughts are turning towards spring shoes, and as my previous trainers - one pair Converse, one pair FitFlop high-tops - are beginning to fall to pieces, I am rather drawn to the bright trainers all the young people seem to be sporting with leggings or skinny jeans

However, as I'm approaching 50 , I realise I'm danger of looking tragic rather than directional. Do you think there are any top tips to avoid the former? Does one need long thin legs, for example? In which case I'm done for...

Bright trainers feel a bit passé now - I think the plimsoll look is more relevant.

I bought black Stan smiths a couple of weeks ago and have worn nothing else.

herbaceous · 12/03/2015 17:36

'Relevant'. I like that!

I need a whole lotta cushioning underneath my ageing feet. But without the massive platform effect of some of today's offerings.

I think the coloured trainers make even the nicest clothes look a bit tourist! I live opposite a holiday let and its really popular with older tourists and all the women wear them but they don't look cool at all just a bit old fashioned

AmberNectarine · 12/03/2015 18:13

That being said I think the sporty styles in more muted colours like burgundy, grey or navy look really good. It's just the shouty 'look at me' pinks and oranges I'm not feeling.

RonaldMcDonald · 12/03/2015 18:31

In New York there were a lot of floral trainers
I shuddered but I'm not one for prints

herbaceous · 12/03/2015 18:37

I rather like the liberty print nikes...

Go with the white. It'll probably be over pretty fast but it's more now if it matters.

noddyholder · 12/03/2015 19:37

I like the liberty ones too

spaceal · 13/03/2015 16:50

Sorry to barge in here but thought I'd post here rather than a new thread. Are either of these acceptable for everyday trainers? They seemed to look much better on me than New Balance or anything like that. I do run but probably wouldn't actually use these for running, just for pottering.

I think the Nike ones are better. All over pink is a bit too bright!

CoconutAmericano · 13/03/2015 18:13

Love the Nikes

spaceal · 13/03/2015 18:19

Thanks viva and coconut I think I prefer the Nikes too - and have found them much cheaper online ;)

This is one on...

noddyholder · 13/03/2015 18:26

Yes I like those too!

herbaceous · 13/03/2015 18:45

Ooh, I like the nikes too! What are they called? And where can I get some?

OP posts:
herbaceous · 13/03/2015 18:51

Actually, I'm having a shufty at Sports Direct, and it is chock full of bargains, and Nike shoes just like those!

OP posts:
spaceal · 13/03/2015 18:57

Yes, herb SportsDirect is the cheapest I found. We have one down the road so may have to pop in tomorrow. Anyone know how Nikes are size-wise?

herbaceous · 13/03/2015 19:05

I always find they come up small. I'm usually a 6, but with Nikes, or indeed most trainers, have to get a 7.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2015 19:06

I've actually got those Nike trainers but with a pink flash. Got them from sports direct and yes had to go a size up. They're a bit narrow but I do have wide feet.

spaceal · 16/03/2015 10:59

Hello again. Reviving this thread - sorry. So I tried those Nikes over the weekend and they just don't work on my feet Sad I tried a few other different trainers but think I'm going to give up.

So now I'm thinking Superga or something similar. Converse are way too narrow for my feet. Are Superga wider? Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Basically they're for everyday/weekend wearing with boyfriend or skinny jeans, with leggings etc. Would like something colourful but not crazy. Thank you!

yazzy85 · 16/03/2015 11:17

I find converse too narrow as well but quite like the fit of Nike Pegasus 83. They are wider in the front and come in lots of colours.

ChinUpChestOut · 16/03/2015 12:15

Brightly coloured trainers have totally passed me by. But as I have knackered old feet, would love to incorporate them into my sad little wardrobe. I have skinnies (invariably tucked into boots - must move on from that) but am not sure what to do with mine as they are a longer length? Am I rolling them up a little? Is that the look?

spaceal · 16/03/2015 21:42

So I've gone with these:

oigetoffmycheese · 16/03/2015 21:45

This sounds really daft but have you tried loosening the laces on converse? I always found them tight until I loosened the laces right out. It was a revelationConfused

Find superga too heavy.

I am thinking Adidas gazelles at the moment though. I just can't decide which colour

QueenBean · 16/03/2015 21:50

Watching this thread with interest!

Want / need some but can't decide which ones either

yazzy85 · 17/03/2015 17:43

oigetoffmycheese I've tried loosening the laces of my converse but they are too narrow in the front of the where the toes are.
