Why are all dresses above the knee?

Orangeanddemons · 07/03/2015 16:45

I've got shit knees. I hate them. Plus at 5ft 9 calf length is the most flattering on me. I don't like Bodycon dresses which are the only ones blowed the knee. what happened to midi length? When I put in in a search engine it just brings up knee length.

I just want a below the knee summer dress in cotton. is this short dress thing a way of saving manufacturers money or something? It's been around for years

I do sympathise .Even (expensive)brands aiming at slightly more mature women seem to have fallen into this trap , but only in the last couple of years. .I've actually got quite nice knees/legs but at my advanced age I dont feel I should be flashing them to all and sundry .And if a skirt is straight they ride up even further when you sit down . I like them just below my knees as calf length 'shortens' me . I'm 5 f 3" Have been known to buy longer and put a hem on, but it depends on the cut .
Even my tall slim good legs (25 yearold) daughter complains...

Comito · 07/03/2015 17:25

Argh yes. High, round necks, no sleeves and mid-thigh. I love dresses but it's so hard to find flattering ones.

RingtheBells · 07/03/2015 17:26

Although some of the styles are a bit frumpy, I have had the occasional nice dress from LTS. I usually go for their knee length ones or about 110-112 cm. I'm 5ft 10.

Also Per Una sometimes has some longer length dresses.

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 07/03/2015 17:27

I'm same height - Toast & Anthropologie do some nice midi dresses & skirts. Warehouse also occasionally has a few.

I know what you mean about waistlines Orange - I gave up on anything from Boden with a twist top as the twisty bit is invariably too high.

I rather like that US dress Hacked - bit worried about sending it back though if it's no good.

stripytees · 07/03/2015 17:31

I agree, dresses seem to get shorter every season. Items of clothing that used to be known as tops are now sold as dresses. A tunic now seems to be intended to be worn on its own rather than over leggings/trousers as previously. So many of these so called dresses are so short that everyone can see your bum cheeks if you bend down (or travel on an escalator).

I'm only 5ft3 but have never liked my thighs so would prefer dresses and skirts to at least come to the middle of my knee.

I saw some longer dresses in the latest Hush catalogue earlier, though. And Seasalt dresses are quite long (their models are very tall - I bought one that was above the knee on their model and it came to mid calf on me!).

Needalifecoach · 07/03/2015 17:34

I am smaller than you but have the same problem.

I ordered eight dresses to try on for a night out and they were all ridiculously short. I ended up wearing a tube skirt and top I already had.

Orangeanddemons · 07/03/2015 17:38

That American one is very very nice. But don't want to get hammered for import and returns. Why can't the Uk do stuff like that. I like the spotty one too, but would have to change the buttons

I hate this too. I'm 5'10" and long-bodied, and any dress that has a waist has the waist virtually on my boobs and the hem somewhere around my upper thighs Angry.

One solution is maxi dresses - buy them and cut off and re-hem at the length you want (or get them altered if you don't want to sew). There are a lot of very simple maxis with no defined waist, some have short sleeves. Good places for these are Hush, Superdry, Dorothy Perkins, Boden (sometimes), Gap. You can make them the length you want and if you want a waist, add a belt or put in an elastic gathered waist.

I also have dresses that are actually knee-length on me, from Hobbs, Damsel in a Dress, White Stuff, Mango and Boden. Some of these were sold as "midi" though. I think dresses are getting shorter, so you can sometimes get a decent longer dress off ebay or in a charity shop. I have a lovely Hobbs one that was £25 and like new, and it's just below the knee.

Or this - more below knee

Agree agree agree.

I have settled for charity shops or making my own!

Now I think about it I always found Laura Ashley dresses too long (used to think their buyers must be tall) But haven't been in lately

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 08/03/2015 10:14

I always buy 'tall' versions of skirts and dresses even though I'm only 5'9" as I prefer the extra length.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 08/03/2015 10:23

Seasalt and East have dresses which are below the knee. Both firms have frequent sales (I think the prices are high). You can find both at John Lewis, find your size and buy from the online sales. Also the dresses are cotton.

herecomesthsun · 08/03/2015 11:24

Also 5ft 9 and long bodied. I buy Boden in the sale, I like a 42" dress or 25" skirt, these will hit just below the knee on me. I'm happy with my legs below the knee, though I think that calf length shirts have been more in vogue recently and looked less "Amish". Boden are good because they give v detailed measurements. I am long bodies, this was more of an issue when I was younger and had an unusually small waist. Im more of a regular hour glass now, and generally fit off the peg clothes better. I even have something of a tum, so clothes that skim the waist arent so bad on me.

Orangeanddemons · 08/03/2015 12:54

Laura Ashley are all short too. Am not overly keen on Seasalt or East tbh. One too twee and one hippy vibe. Going to check them out though

I've just bought this. Viscose rather than cotton, but at least t has sleeves and is longish

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 08/03/2015 19:59

Zara do quite a few longer styles?

Zanzibaragain · 08/03/2015 20:08

I hear you!

A skirt or dress just below the knee, esp a pencil skirt looks so much better.
So many pencil skirts on me are just ill fitting minis.
The proportions all wrong.

MissBattleaxe · 09/03/2015 08:10

The 90s though? Bodycon sleeveless polo neck dresses, and shapeless denim slouch skirts? Nooo!

I was thinking more the boho days of floaty midi skirts and long pinafore dresses. Back when Monsoon was good.

Bunbaker · 09/03/2015 08:19

"Miniscule room for boobage, massive on hips,"

Sounds like they would be a good fit for me then - no boobs, pear shaped.
