I have booked to have mine done. Dentist did the mould yesterday. I'm going back next week to pick them up and get the bleach, then I have to apply it myself at home.

If you've had this done, can I ask
Is wearing the mould uncomfortable?
Does the actual whitening hurt? I've heard it does and I'm a big wimp.
How much whiter did it make your teeth?

I did this before Christmas using the Opalescence 10% gel. The mould was absolutely fine, I wore it overnight without any problems. I also had no problems with sore gums but did get a very small amount of sensitivity. Took 2 weeks to whiten them quite a few shades, but not gleaming white (which I didn't want). I had a veneer on one of my front teeth which I used as a guide because obviously this didn't whiten. When I was happy I had to have the veneer replaced to match the new shade. It has lasted quite well, but I believe you can top it up a couple of times a year. I have heard that higher percentage gels can be more painful and cause more sensitivity.

I do it now and again.
I use 'tooth mousse' afterwards - it s a product I put into the trays - my dentist got it for me. You could do the same with a sensitive tooth paste. It helps.

I was one of my dentist's original 'guniea pigs' for this type of whitening - in 1997!

Yes it's a bit painful & there is an increase in sensitivity but, in my experience, the results are so good that the discomfort is just not worth crying about.

My original tooth colour is a natural dark yellow, my children inherited that shade too, they both had their teeth whitened by this method at 16. Same dentist. Top ups from time to time. I cannot recommend it highly enough Wink We all have lovely teeth, if I do say so myself!

Thank you,

I really like the shape of my teeth and they are very straight. They have always been a slighty yellow colour though and as I get older it seems to be getting worse and I now avoid smiling.

I'm very excited but a complete baby. Hope it doesn't hurt too much.

I had moulds done this week and I'm going back next week to start the whitening. Hopefully it works.!

Can you give me a rough idea of price? I'm also cursed with hereditary yellow teeth (and a tea addict)

thenextday · 06/03/2015 14:55

It doesn't hurt.
However I had mine done ten years ago and find that when I top up (mid 50s) the moulds hurt in places

AntNebula · 06/03/2015 15:11

I did this about four years ago for the first time, and then topped up last year. Was delighted with the results. Like Fozzie says, I didn't end up with gleaming white teeth - they were just nicely brightened up.

I was worried that the process would hurt, as I have receding gums. But the dentist advised me to use Sensodyne toothpaste for a couple of weeks beforehand and then during the bleaching process, which I did, and everything was absolutely fine - no pain at all.

My dentist has a teeth whitening discount day. There's a choice of 2 trays for the teeth and I picked the better type of tray...no idea what they're called. It cost me £200. she said the gel has a long expiry date so I can top up if I need to. Also I assume I can then just buy the gel on its own.

LadyPenny · 06/03/2015 15:41

Puts Sensodyne on shopping list.

barleysugarmine is costing £250.

VeryStressedMum please come back when you do it. We can compare results.

Did mine last year and topping up now - have your hygienist clean your teeth first - even better results. It does sting a bit but not much x

mycatlikestwiglets · 06/03/2015 22:03

Did mine in September. I found the moulds ok in themselves although they rubbed my gums in a couple of places so after a few days' use (I did 10 stints altogether, each for a few hours overnight) they were a bit sore. The gel caused pretty bad sensitivity though, especially when the moulds were removed. It was like shooting pain through my teeth and pretty unpleasant. I had fairly white teeth to start with and they went noticeably brighter but I wouldn't rush to repeat the process (I paid £200 on offer from my dentist). I used sensodyne toothpaste for a few days before, throughout and for a fee weeks afterwards.

IshbelAnderson · 07/03/2015 12:16

I've tried again & again with the moulds, but I end up puking every time I do it because of the taste of the gel, I have no idea how people manage to keep them in overnight without choking. Envy

Trizelda · 07/03/2015 12:29

Paid about £250 I think a few years ago for the moulds and 2 weeks worth of gel. Nothing much happened for a few days then all of a sudden I noticed a difference and was really pleased with the final result. Since then I have bought some more gel from the dentist and used it for about 4 days for a top up. I could sleep in the moulds but took them out if I woke up in the early hours.
