How to create a messy bob

fiorentina · 05/03/2015 10:37

I had my hair cut into a long bob a few weeks ago. I was hoping I would relatively easily be able to create a slightly messy look as my hair isn't dead straight. However I am struggling. How can I create sort of wave that Sienna Miller or Wearing it Today's Laura have? Which products or tools should I use? Any recommendations much appreciated. Thanks

Marking my place as I was going to start a thread asking exactly the same!

Wit uses salt spray on hers but it just makes mine dry and frizzy. I've found that no product and drying naturally works the best with an occasional scrunch whilst drying

I'd love to know too. I had it cut and now it just looks like a hat.

QueenCardigan · 05/03/2015 13:48

I've been thinking the same this week. I think Laura uses sea salt spray but I've never got on with that in the past.

An article in grazia says you need to ask for an undercut. They recommend kerastase spray a porter tousled effect spray, £21 and Hershesons tourmaline professional waving tongs,£98. Also John friends blnde sea waves sea salt spray which apparently has coconut oil in to counteract the drying effect, £6.99.

An undercut? Seems a bit drastic...

I use Aveda Volume Grains on the roots and a TiGi styling cream on the ends.

OP...I have short hair so cannot help, however, I had to post!! Whilst scrolling throw mumsnet actives, I found this thread and was convinced it was titled.."how to make a messy boob"

Grin

Apologies....as you were

HermioneWeasley · 05/03/2015 14:05

I use a home made salt spray when it's wet and then put waves in with straightening irons when it's dry

fiorentina · 05/03/2015 14:15

Messy boobs is not what I need..!

I will look again at salt spray and look at some waving tongs. This isn't as low maintenance as I would have liked. Confused

Can you just use lots of volumising spray on the roots and blow dry your hair upside down using your fingers to poof it/mess it up? IYKWIM. Works for me.

Hadmeathello · 05/03/2015 14:34

YouTube tutorials seem to suggest mousse and texturising spray.

I've got a 'lob' hate saying that Grin

And wear it in a messy style but I have found that the only way it looks nice messy as opposed to scruffy messy is to wave it all properly first and then brush it through and then add products, I use salt spray.

I will experiment at the weekend and buy some not too expensive waving tongs and give it a go! Thanks

Don't think you necessarily need a full blown undercut. My stylist says you do need to chip into the lengths though if you want to create a textured, messed-up high volume finish. I've got pretty straight hair though.

GallicIsCharlie · 05/03/2015 19:42

If your hair's thick & wavy, having some choppy layers cut in should sort it for you. If it's not so thick or you don't want layers, try letting it dry naturally and twisting chunks of it round your fingers every so often - or you could do that with a hairdryer, I guess.

I've got a hot brush thing instead of a hairdryer. It's really easy to just twist it a bit while drying, then use it to flick the ends up :)

LadyB49 · 05/03/2015 22:26

Mine is layered and razor cut. Dry upside down using gel on wet hair. Scrunched dry. A touch with straighteners. Run fingers through hair using product to texturise,
