I sort of want this hair - what do i ask the stylist for?

Morning Smile

Hair appointment on Saturday. I usually just have a trim of lengths and fringe but I've decided I really hate my hair and its got to go chin length ish. Crop will not work so please don't suggest it. I don't particularly like shoulder length.

I want this or something along those lines but have no idea what to ask for - hair is fine, fringe, natural colour, a shit perm happened 4 months ago but its on its way out now thank fuck.

What is the difference between these two? The first one has layers I assume? What has the second one got? Is it just messy?

Or do I go for something safe like the 3rd pic, until I am used to the shorter length, then get layers at the next appt? (I usually have a trim every 8 weeks)

I'd just take the pictures and have a chat - I did this when I wanted a long side-swept type fringe that would frame my face when my hair was up but blend in when it was down and be long enough to pin back when it irritated me Confused
Needless to say my lovely hairdresser appreciated a visual clue in addition to my insane ramblings!

I think you could ask for a choppy bob....I wouldn't go for Dawn Porters hairdo (I refuse to use that ridiculous O' thing she's put in front of her surname) as to me it looks a bit Lego hair, y'know...helmetty.

Just take the picture in and discuss how it could work with your hair type. It may be that yours isn't thick/long/straight enough but the stylist will be able to talk it through.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2015 11:25

Dawn O'Porter's hair is too heavy IMO (I use whatever name people have decided they wish to be known by) It might also need a fair amount of upkeep to keep it neat and sleek.

I like Cheryl Cole's new do can't be arsed to look up how to spell her latest
Or the Amelie Bob when it's styled messily.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 03/03/2015 11:48

Thanks for replies Smile I am so embarrassed that I just had to google Dawn to work out which pic was her - I just got the pics by typing chin length hair fringe into google! Blush soo out of touch with the celeb world! Sorry. Right so now I know which one we're talking about, yes bit Lego-hair for me...maybe not her style then! Grin

I really really want number 1 but I am.not brave enough. Or am I Confused
I am still overweight, will it look terrible on a lady who is a bit fat? My face and neck aren't particularly chubs though. Will I feel I need to make extra make up effort/dress pleasantly to keep in with my new hairstyle? (this would apply to any type of restyle I guess, colour/length/shape change whatever)

Also I am worried about looking less feminine with shorter hair. Broad shouldered, large hands, no make up, jeans and a fleece...if I had a proper crop I could easily be mistaken for a man, were it not for my height Confused

I wanted roughly your first picture but without the fringe and with a side parting. I took in pictures and discussed it at length with the hairdresser. I ended up with more of your third picture (without fringe and with side parting). The hairdresser seemed very reluctant to cut my hair short and halfway through asked me if it was short enough and when I said no, she didn't seem to take any more off. Angry

It has now grown to the boring shoulder length you so want to avoid (and I do too). I shall have to go back again soon - but to a different hairdresser who listens!

Good luck. I can only recommend taking in the photos and saying 'this is what I want and this is what I definitely don't want'. But, as I said, it didn't work for me.

Dumbledoresgirl · 03/03/2015 11:57

Oh no, your first picture (well, all of them really) is a very feminine cut. You won't look like a man at all! Go for it! I was a bit worried about getting my hair cut short as it has been at least shoulder length and often much longer all my life but I thought if the worst comes to the worst, it will soon grow out. In my case, far too soon, grrr.

Lovewearingjeans · 03/03/2015 12:43

I like both 1 and 2, and say go for it! Trouble with fine hair (my type) is that you have to put in a bit of work to get movement. Pictures are always good to take to the hairdresser, and a good hairdresser will talk you through styling it.

polyhymnia · 03/03/2015 13:24

I like the first one best. Definitely very feminine and fine on any size. Think the style is what my hairdresser would call a messy bob. (He rather specialises in that look - he does Alexa Chung, though even he will never be able to transform me into someone as cool, slender and youthful as her!).

daimbardiva · 03/03/2015 13:55

Go for it and definitely take the picture. Ive just gone to chin length from shoulder length (messy bob, but w natural waves) and i feel fresher' younger and edgier. Like i have a hairstyle again rather than hair that's justhanging there.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 16/03/2015 21:07

I did it, I had it chopped! Grindon't regret it one tiny bit! Grinsoo much nicer now.

I played it a bit safe, a slightly graduated bob, not dramatically layered, but definitely too short to tie back and i love it. Smooth and bouncy. I will add a pic when I'm feeling brave and have got some make up on, hate doing selfies!

My hairdresser neighbour friend did it for me in the end, I had the main length of it (a little over 9 inches) cut off in a ponytail first before she did the style, and I'm sending the ponytail off to the Little Princess Trust for wig making Smile

I would love to see the pic of how it looks not Daryl. Please post one. I have a shorter than chin length layered bob and I love it.

Bakeoffcake · 16/03/2015 22:53

Oh yes please posts a photo!

I have a rather boring bob at the moment and would love to jazz it up a bit.

Horsemad · 17/03/2015 14:49

Would love to see a pic (I love pic no. 1 in your OP) and well done for donating your hair, what a lovely thing to do. Smile
