Best Perfume for a Sixteen yo

Just that really.

DN is coming up to 16 and I'd like to get her something special - was thinking of a proper 'grown up' perfume.

Would like to get something nice, but age appropriate. Chanel for example would be to a bit too 'in yer face' for a teenager I think. Something light and floral. Not chavy. Not frumpy.

Anyone got any recommendations?

My DD was 16 a couple of weeks ago. We have a tradition that on your 16th birthday you get taken to choose your own 'grown-up' perfume. She chose Chanel Chance Eau Tendre. Apart from being Chanel it does seem to tick your other boxes Grin

I don't know that perfume.... is it new?

Will check it out. Chanel is a nice special thing to get, isn't it.

It depends what her tastes are, if she likes loud scents then Katy Perry is nice or some Chloe or Daisy by MJ are nice ones too.

I'd take her round a dept store with testers, get her to try some on then either buy then and there or return and get one.

They often do free gifts too even on the nicer scents.

when I was 16 I used my mum's Rochas Femme but when 17 and earning it was Obsession and Byzance. Grin

Cristalle is nice. by Chanel.

It really does differ on the skin though how it smells. She may like Elie Saab Le Parfum (which is lighter than the main one) she may not!

I got Miss Dior ( linky ) when I was about her age...it reminds me of a messy week in Faliraki but it's lush. You should bring her with you and go for afternoon tea or something afterwards! Eugh I'm jealous.

TranquilityofSolitude · 02/03/2015 14:37

I think for my DD it was as much about the process of choosing as it was about the perfume itself. Would you have a chance to shop with your DN? We turned it into a morning's entertainment and were lucky to find a shop assistant in Boots who was sympathetic and keen to make DD feel special.

Some of the Britney perfumes are surprisingly nice Blush Circus fantasy is really quite a pleasant fragrance.

The new Jimmy Choo 'Blossom' is very floral and the Vera Wang 'Princess' perfumes would be worth looking at. We bought 'Pink Princess' for my DN for her last birthday and she loved it!

Stella McCartney, the original edp...gorgeous!

LeoandBoosmum · 02/03/2015 18:28

For Chanel, she'd probably like Mademoiselle or Chance edp...both younger scents, I think. Miss Dior is lovely but smell both, the edt, edp and le parfum are different. I think a younger girl would like the edt, it smells a lot like Coco Mademoiselle.

Tommy Girl by Tommy Hilfiger is gorgeous. Also Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana.

Ooh also Touch of Pink by Lacoste and Ralph by Ralph Lauren.

They all have fairly plain bottles but if you want something with a flashier bottle then check out Viva la Juicy by Juicy Couture which has a fun bow and a chunky glass stopper. And a chain, I think?!

They're all fruity frangrances which will probably go down well at that age. No 16 year old wants to smell like gardenias.

Escada usually have a summer fragrance - I think this year's is called Turquoise Summer. They are usually quite popular with teenagers and are usually quite sweet and fruity.

There are so many brands that make lovely perfumes - Chanel (Chance and the newer/lighter Chance versions), Dior (the Addict ones, J'Adore, Miss Dior), Guerlain (La Petite Robe Noire, Aqua Allegoria, Idylle), Issey Miyake, Chloe, Victor & Rolf (Flowerbomb), Burberry, YSL (Black Opium), Prada and so on.

I really think it depends on what she likes and what works on her skin.

My mum was recently given a 100 ml Prada Iris something perfume - my mum hadn't tried it herself, but it smelled lovely on a colleague. It smells awful on my mum (and me) and it is now a very posh air freshener in the bathroom... To avoid that, I'd really try to get a sample of the perfume that your niece can try before opening the full size perfume - so she can exchange the perfume if it really isn't her thing.
Alternatively maybe get a list of perfumes she would like.

DD1 has Sa Majeste La Rose by Serge Lutens.

DD2 has Katy Perry's Meow.

Do not recommend the latter under any circumstances.

When I was that age I had a glamorous aunt who brought me perfumes from Switzerland. The best presents ever.
(She wore Vol de Nuit herself.)

The bottle is as important as the content - so check out Marc Jacobs perfumes and Chloes. Chanel have entry level perfumes (Chance, Allure, and the lovely and relatively little-known Allure Sensuelle; if she is into orientals, Coco Noir is light and easy to wear). Guerlain have Aqua Allegorias (most of them easy to wear but try them first - Pamplemousse is pretty scary). The Hermes Jardins series is high quality and not fluffy pink. Tommy Girl is great too, but she probably won't love the bottle.

I second what others say: take her shopping and let her choose.

AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 19:15

my dd likes Daisy

TheWoollybacksWife · 02/03/2015 19:21

DD1 (20) has worn Vera Wang Princess for a few years now. It smells gorgeous on her.

DD2 (15) wears Eau So Daisy by Marc Jacobs and that smells lovely on her too.

Both have lovely bottles and do other items such as body lotion for "layering"

justaweeone · 02/03/2015 21:05

My Dd had Chloe for her sixteenth
I fancied buying some but was told I couldn't as it was her signature scent !!
