Best outfit for a long haul flight?

We are flying to Singapore and then on to Australia in a few weeks and I would like something super comfy but stylish to wear on the flight. What would your ideal outfit be and what kind of things do you take in your hand luggage to make sure you don't look like a dogs dinner when you arrive? Thanks :)

genuine q - why are you concerned about looking stylish on a 24 hour flight? nothing that is comfortable enough for such an endurance feat will ever look "stylish". Just stick your best diamonds on with the sweatshirt and leggings.

earlyriser · 02/03/2015 13:35

I would wear a loose fitting dress over leggings with a cardie and maybe a cape type blanket for the flight. When you get to Singapore you can whip off the leggings and cardie and still be cool.

SusuEnglish · 02/03/2015 13:36

Because I like to look nice - it's not the end of the world if I look like crap but I like to look nice and well put together :)

You won't look stylish by the time you get to Singapore. Think dehydrated, knackered and looking pretty rough. Double that when you land in Oz!

I fly in light jersey style trousers or leggings or joggers, a t-shirt and a sweater that you can take off if plane gets too hot and may be a large scarf for if it gets cold. Don't forget toothbrush, toothpaste and a moisturiser for face and hands. Cosy socks are good as well as I take my shoes off.

Seriously though don't worry about looking stylish.

StrawberryCheese · 02/03/2015 13:40

I had advice on here to buy harem pants and they were great and so comfy. Layer up with t shirt, cardi, scarf etc. As for things to have in your bag, face wipes, moisturiser, deodorant and toothpaste/toothbrush is all I needed. Plus the obvious fresh underwear and spare t shirt. I've never flown all the way to Australia but have gone to Singapore several times.

bryonyelf · 02/03/2015 13:43

oh yes, I remember the next harem pants from last year.

BearPear · 02/03/2015 13:52

We did that trip last year and I read all the advice at the time - harem pants, scarves, etc. I travelled in skinnies (with Lycra stretch) a t-shirt, Whistles blazer and a scarf. I wasn't crumpled, dehydrated & scruffy on arrival, just tired!

Nolim · 02/03/2015 13:54

Confortable shoes and a bra with as little metal as possible.

And agree with pther posters than when it comes to a long flight style is pretty itrelevant.r

CMOTDibbler · 02/03/2015 14:00

I've done an awful lot of longhaul travel, and imo the people that are dressed comfortably look a lot better at the other end than those who try to look stylish.

If it bothers you, then wear whatever you want to the airport, then get changed into yoga pants, long sleeve tee, crop top bra and cardi (or similarly layered soft clothes) and take your makeup off in the loo at the boarding gate, then put the nice clothes on again in the loo once landed.

Swimmingwithsharks · 02/03/2015 14:00

Have you got a long layover in Singapore? Go to the free massage chairs and they will squeeze your swollen legs back to normal size. Go to the hotel and have a shower or book a room for a nap as well. You can even book in a wash and blow dry. Change your clothes and let them get all crumpled up again on your looooong flight to Oz.
Otherwise, minimal make up, tooth brush and toothpaste, a great big cotton scarf to keep your neck warm or use as an extra pillow. A fresh tee shirt and matching cardi/ light jacket to put on when you arrive. A clip for your hair, the static will make it look flat and greasey even if it's squeaky clean, so put it up or pull it back into a sleek pony tail when you get off.

Artandco · 02/03/2015 14:02

I always travel in Hareem pants and blazer if warm enough ( ie no ski jacket needed). Then add cashmere jumper underneath, and vest top. Can take layers off as needed. I take a thin cashmere blanket also if long haul as can cold ( and plane blankets always shed colour - thanks Virgin for making whole plane of people a red tinge)

TSSDNCOP · 02/03/2015 14:08

Black yogas, t shirt, cardi and wrap. Leave london in trainers and socks, on flight ditch trainers. I bag have flip flops plus new pants, yogas and t shirt. Have toothbrush, toothpaste, hair bands and sunglasses ready for landing.

SusuEnglish · 02/03/2015 14:13

Thanks all - we actually have a 2 day stay over in Singapore so we'll be getting showered and stuff ready for the next leg of the journey. I like the sound of a dress with leggins. I've never tried on any harem pants - It's one of those things I think they look good on other people but I don't think they will on me. Maybe I should try them and see. Never thought of packing a toothbrush in my hand luggage so thanks for that tip

My travel outfit is warm, comfortable and stylish. It's skinny jeans with Lycra stretch, Me&Em long sleeve tee which is made of modal material do is warm. Over it I wear a beige white company cashmere knit. I also take a cashmere travel wrap/pashmina, cashmere socks and boots. Sometimes it's my Ugg boots, other times it's my Russell& Bromley biker boots. I also wear Jewelry with it.

Essentials on the plane - moisturiser, lip balm and bottle of water. Apply/drink every 2 hours if awake.

FrugalFashionista · 02/03/2015 14:17

I fly long haul quite a lot and my waist expands and ankles swell when I'm confined to a tiny space and fed salty snacks and alcohol. Hence, sweatpants or yoga pants and a sweatshirt and a throw, earplugs, an eye mask, melatonin and Ambien and woolen socks, throwaway hotel slippers, a personal water bottle, lip balm and an iPad are my special touches for the trip. An ultralight down jacket is great too if you have a window seat. A hood is a plus. Color coordinate them or something for maximum style.

If you want luxury, I suggest the following: fresh underwear, toiletries, sleepwear and a couple of extra outfits... If you change planes, it is not guaranteed that your checked-in luggage will make it.

trader21c · 02/03/2015 14:20

I fly longhaul a lot to Asia - you need to wear something cozy because they will turn the lights off on the plane and nearly everyone will go to sleep! I'm not sure that a dress is suitable while you are flying. I usually fly in leggings and heattech tops with a smarter jacket because you can get cold on the plane. I wouldn't worry about style - your prime concern surely is to get some sleep!! Incidentally I usually have a smarter change of clothes (pack the dress?) in my handluggage and pop these on when I've landed at the stop-over (we nearly always fly via the Mid East). As someone else said, toothbrush essential for the handluggage!

BritabroadinAsia · 02/03/2015 14:28

Agree with wearing harem pants, t-shirt, jacket and scarf. I was given a lovely cashmere cape as a present which folds down like a very small blanket but acts as a great layer when it gets cold on the plane. Probably a ridiculous luxury if this is a one off journey, but as a fairly frequent long haul flier it is one if the best gifts I've ever received!

Don't forget your sunglasses in your hand luggage and an extra pair of socks to put on once you take off. I would recommend comfortable slip on shoes (ballet flats/ skater shoes etc) that you can wear with pop socks (I know!) at the start of your journey and without anything once you are in Singapore/ Australia in the heat - if you want to sleep with them off you won't want to be faffing around tying shoe laces every time you need to go to the loo (and let's face it, you'll definitely be wanting shoes on your feet then).

As others have said, load up on the moisturiser, lip balm, toothpaste and hand cream, and be cautious about what jewellery you are wearing - I have spent uncomfortable hours with earring studs pressed into my neck courtesy of falling asleep with earphones on... I tend to take my earrings off, but then I don't wear anything too precious that I would be devastated to lose if I dropped one. I tie hair back to start and finish, and sleep with it loose.

Remember to drink LOADS of water, long plane journeys are horribly dehydrating, and have a great time in Australia. Smile

Unidentifieditem · 02/03/2015 14:41

I look like a Hush sample sale when I fly longhaul Grin
Leggings, long vest top, layered with a short cashmere jumper or long sleeve tee. Also some sort of pashmina/ shawl thing

TheWordFactory · 02/03/2015 14:50

My uniform for long haul flights is black yoga pants, dark coloured tee shirt, soft cardigan.

You want to be able to sleep or at least relax and watch movies in whatever contorted position you can manage. It is also less likely to show spills, which seem unavoidable on long flights (especially if you're flying with DC).

plumstone · 02/03/2015 18:00

I have just done this flight and hate looking "crumpled" on arrival. I left in Gap joggers and hoodie, and had skinnies teeshirt and pashmina for arrival with new underwear, and all the toiletries and makeup that I could fit in my plastic bag. 90 mins before landing went to the loo with bag and came out as fresh as you can after 24 hours in a confined space. Also sunnies on arrival are a must - very pretentious but they cover my very attractive piggy, squinty, unslept eyes!!! Have a fab trip

Sausagerollers · 02/03/2015 18:16

Great Trousers

I swear by the trousers above for travel. They look smart but they're super comfy with an elasticated back of the waist. They're also made from Thermalcool fabric which is supposed to keep you warm when it's cold and cold when it's warm, so on a flight where someone else managed the temperature controls they're perfect.

With a jersey top, cashmere jumper and colourful scarf it's like wearing pjs, but with style ;-)

SunshineAndShadows · 02/03/2015 18:34

Lots of longhaul here too. Fail safe: leggings and a dress with boots, or skinnies, t shirt and boots, plus blazer, scarf and comfy socks. Pack flip flops for arrival, deodorant, facewipes, moisturiser and sunglasses.
Have fun

SuburbanCrofter · 03/03/2015 16:07

Another long haul traveller. I usually wear cotton skinnies (with Lycra), and as other have said, wear with pop socks and flats, then take the pop socks off when I arrive. I wear this with a loose shirt that I know doesn't get too crumpled, and a cardigan. Planes do get cold! Also reiterate what others said - take toothbrush and toothpaste, hairbrush and lip balm as carry-on.

Sausagerollers I love the look of those trousers! However it says they are made of polyester - forgive me for asking, but don't they end up smelling cheesy round the crotch??

FreeButtonBee · 03/03/2015 16:38

I like pj style trousers, a nice loose v neck tshirt, jersey jacket, slip on shoes (I love ballet flats/soft suede pointy flats) then big scarf and merino/cashmere jumper and nice socks in carry on bag. Take off jacket and shoes, put on socks and jumper. wrap upper torso in big scarf and chill.

An awesome trick is to find a beauty stand in duty free that will do a cleanse and treatment (rather than makeup) session. Lovely jubbly. Ditch DH at the bar and have 15mins treatment and then skin is nice and hydrated for getting on the plane.

KiteKit · 03/03/2015 20:09

I travelled a lot of long haul flights a couple of years ago and had my 'travel' outfit down to a tee in the end.

I tried it in jeans, even with lycra they were super uncomfortable to sit in for so many hours.

I cannot / will not travel in joggers.

So. I wore some loose cotton tunic style dresses (I had them from noa noa and monsoon) with a long sleeved pure cotton top beneath, good quality leggings (so they don't go prematurely baggy), brogues or ankle boots, a long line cardigan or a fitted blazer depending on the dress and a very large light wool scarf which doubled as a shawl / blanket when the air con got too much.

In my hand luggage I had sandals / flip flops and the usuals - toothbrush etc

Once we arrived at the terminal I nipped into the ladies and took off the long sleeved top & shoes etc. If I was not too hot I left on the leggings, otherwise I took them off too and slipped on my sandals and I was good to go! And I still felt like 'me' iykwim?
