Foundation...

Hi!

I need a new foundation, and I need full coverage. I currently use 010 light in Rimmel Perfect match. I want a higher end foundation and don't mind spending. My difficulty is that I can't get a colour match, nearest store with estee lauder, mac etc is an hour away on the train.

Any tips? Thanks!

I'm keeping my eye on this too. Currently using Laura Mercier but the colour match is too dark as I'm very fair.

The joys of pale skin! Makes contouring a pain in the arse as well!

Have you tried Clarin's everlasting foundation? It gives full coverage without looking chalky and lasts all day??

storynanny2 · 01/03/2015 19:22

This was me a couple of weeks ago, needing more coverage for more mature (old) skin.
I used Maybelline 24 stay in fawn for years, really like it.
However treated myself to a makeover in Debenhams, tried Chanel on mumsnet recommendation. I've got the cc ( concealing cream?) and then the aqua luminaire. I I
Ts lovely although next time will go a shade lighter.

Tips?

Mine would be to get samples of colour matches and take them home to try in daylight before you pay £30-£40 for mid-high end foundation. What looks like a close match in artificial, department store beauty hall lighting can look very different indeed in sunlight.

Comito · 01/03/2015 19:56

yy mrsraegan it's a PITA isn't it? I cannot tell you how many times I've sat at the counter telling the assistant I'm very pale while she paints my jawline with something approaching the shade of creosote.

I used to love the Laura Mercier, but I think my skin has changed enough in the last five years to make it now unsuitable. It does also have an annoying habit of turning a kind of powdery white if you sweat or get a few drops of rain on your face.

I'll definitely try and get some samples, I hadn't actually thought of doing that for some daft reason.

frankietwospots · 01/03/2015 21:57

Just got a sample of Clarins Everlasting today in Ivory. OMFG - amazing coverage and goes on brilliantly with the Real Techniques stippling brush. I added the Clarins Instant concealer jobbie and Bobbi Brown pot rouge in Calyspo Coral and was good to go.

CarlaVeloso · 01/03/2015 22:02

Estée Lauder Doublewear Light is lovely. I'm moderately fair and use 1.0. They'll give you sample pots that last ages,

southeastastra · 01/03/2015 22:04

i quite like the bobbi brown foundation seems to suit me

HootOnTheBeach · 01/03/2015 23:12

I have a Clarins one. It's in a pot and slightly messy but if you go to a counter in House of Fraser they will match you.

avocadotoast · 01/03/2015 23:15

Illamasqua Skin Base is great, and they do it in super pale shades. If you have a store nearby you can go in for them to match you up.

I haven't used their other foundations but I got Skin Base for my wedding and it was perfect.

avocadotoast · 01/03/2015 23:16

Oh! And if you ask nicely they'll give you a sample pot of primer too. (I swear I sound like I'm on commission for them haha.)

Lisa Eldridge, the nice make up guru gives lots of examples of foundations for very pale skin. She also differentiates between tones of pale skin too.

I agree with getting samples - it can save you a fortune as you'll avoid buying expensive products that might not work for you - the shade could be wrong, the foundation could oxidise on the skin or make you break out or just look terrible on you.

I'm not a fan of full coverage foundations so my experience is fairly limited, but I have Clarins Everlasting and I've been using it a bit.
It is decent enough, but can look very cakey, especially in fine lines and on dry areas.
It doesn't cover my freckles and is not completely matte which I like.
It doesn't wear as well as I'd like - on the oilier bits of my face, it seems to separate or split a bit, and on the drier bits of my face it seems to enhance everything I don't want enhanced like fine lines and dry patches.
It seems to contain a lot of perfume - I can smell the foundation for a long time after I've applied it.

For similar coverage, I prefer Diorskin Nude which I think looks better and more natural on the skin. It might have a little less coverage but it just looks better all over, doesn't enhance dry bits and fine lines and generally just looks awesome.
I've used this one for years and I just don't have any complaints.

Estee Double Wear is full coverage, but there's a Maximum Cover that might also be an option for you. I haven't tried them, but have heard so many awesome things about both foundations. I do have Estee Lauder Double Wear Light which is brilliant - it's light/medium coverage and matte and worth the money.

All three companies have always been good at giving me samples.

You could get the samples, test and decide on one and then buy online.

I don't know if it'll help you at all but I have:
107 Beige in Clarins Everlasting (which might be a tad too dark at the moment - I think I bought it during summer)
010 in Diorskin Nude (perfect for me right now - it is more neutral than the other two)
ELDWL is Intensity 0.5 (perfect for me, but more yellow than the other two).
Mac Face & Body in N1 also seems like a perfect match.
I have a sample of the Rimmel Lasting Finish foundation in 100 Ivory and it looks like a perfect match for me.
I've had a few Bobbi Brown foundations and they are terribly yellow on me.

I wouldn't buy anything without at least having had a look in the store, but it might give you some kind of idea if they'll have a shade that will work for you.

Comito · 04/03/2015 08:50

I got a sample of the Chanel Perfection Lumiere in (I think) 12 beige rose which I've tried this morning. Colour match was excellent and it went on well with good coverage. Will see how it goes through the day but definitely promising.

Comito · 09/03/2015 20:47

The sample I got was actually Beige 10. I wore it for a few days and it's been great. The coverage isn't quite as full as the Laura Mercier but that's actually not a bad thing. It held up with only minor retouching after a lunchtime gym session and someone told me yesterday that my skin looked fantastic and glowing. I've bought a full bottle now, as well as the loose powder in clair. That's actually a tad too pale but it's not a massive problem.

MrsRaegan · 13/03/2015 09:24

I ended up going with the Clinique conceal and perfect in the palest shade Alabaster, with my MAC pressed powder to set.
