If you don't wash your hair every day...

If you don't wash your hair every day, what do you do if your non-wash day falls on a special occasion that you want to look your best for?

I wash my hair every day, but have often been told (by friends, hairdressers and most frequently my sister) that I shouldn't, would be better condition if I didn't etc. It isn't in bad condition generally, but if I don't wash it, it is very lank, stringy and greasy by mid-morning.

However, as I am returning to work from maternity leave in a couple of months I am looking for time saving ideas for work mornings! So thought I'd give it a go.

Thursday- went to hairdressers so had good wash and blow dry
Friday- left it; was just going to soft play and outdoor walk (hat on) so not too much of a problem but it did feel disgusting by the end of the day!
Today- have washed it, lovely and soft and clean
Tomorrow- meeting 12 frievds for Sunday lunch at nice restaurant! But if I wash it I will break my cycle!

Do you just break the cycle and wash it and then leave it the next day?

Another question- how do you keep feeling fresh and clean on a non-wash day?! I mean I had a shower and washed my body and face but my head and hair just felt so dirty, do I just have to get used to that?!

I am also trying to stop touching my hair throughout the day and have started rinsing it in cold water, any other tips?

I have a feeling I'm overthinking all this... TIA!

StatisticallyChallenged · 28/02/2015 17:29

I haven't washed my hair since last monday.

It's long and curly and non greasy.

Today, it is looking fairly yetty-ish, but not smelly or anything.

tearoomtrash · 28/02/2015 19:54

Mine hair's greasy too & I used to wash every day but styling was damaging the condition so over time I have trained myself to wash every 4th day. The condition is much better and my colour (auburn with copper tones) holds for longer.

I wash the night before so it dries naturally, then heat style the next morning. The next day I use dry shampoo (although it doesn't always need it anymore) and heat style again, the third day I put it in a bun or top knot, the fourth day I put up again and wash in the evening.

It has taken time to get to this point but it is much less greasy now.

I tend to wash it for a special occasion if it needs it, regardless what day in the cycle.

I second shampooing twice. I went from short to shoulder length and have gone also from daily wash to every 3 days over about a year - starting with every 2 days and then every 3 when it no longer felt greasy after 2.
I think being very careful to concentrate shampoo on the scalp but concentrate conditioner on the ends really helps as you are not overdrying the ends or adding grease to the roots.
I have also swapped to non sulphate shampoo and non silcone conditioner (L'oreal eversleek) which I think (couldn't prove!) has helped by not being too harsh or coating the hair. Reducing blow drying has also helped (let it dry to halfway before blowdrying) as it doesn't dry out and need to produce extra oil.
Its al worth trying but I think its a case of extending the time gradually.
Oh and if I have day 3 hair and it needs something extra, I rinse it and condition the ends, then blow dry from half dry. Seems to work! Not sure why

I was a daily hair washer for years, and always found my hair greasy if I didn't.
I gave up on the daily washing when I was on maternity leave with dd (I let my hair grow longer and just tied it out of the way when I didn't have time to wash) and now my basic rule is every 3rd day, although I can go to 4 days at a push.
If for any reason I start shampooing it more often (frequent swimming trips in the summer, for example) it just seems to need it more often, so I am careful not to slip back to old habits! I have a fairly short and simple style, though, and don't need to blow dry or style it (although it does look a bit neater if I do, and when it's cold weather I prefer to).

Blamenargles · 28/02/2015 21:19

yes shampoo twice your ment too, and conditioner shouldnt go any where near the roots.
I never understand people that say they run out of conditioner before shampoo, I use 3 bottle of shampoo to 1 bottle of conditioner

I highly recommend dry shampoo and if your hair is in good condition spray leave in conditioner might be a better option as its a lot lighter and just use normal conditioner once a week

Long hair, naturally wavy if left. Wash it every other day. At night so by the morning the slight post blow dry frizz has calmed down. Then curl/wave it. Wash fringe everyday though. Fringe takes literally a minute.

Double shampoo. First with clarifying and then a moisturising one. Suspect that's a big no no but it keeps my hair smelling fresh whereas a single shampoo didn't.

If I had something to go to I'd wash it again regardless of which day I was on, hair wash wise. Although prob still the night before as it just looks better when waved which is how I'm liking it styled at the mo.

I used to shampoo everyday but all that blow drying made it frizzy and had to control. I don't have that problem now. Also partly because I use one of those micro fibre hair turbans to part dry it before the hair dryer. Cuts down the drying time a lot.

CremeEggThief · 28/02/2015 23:22

I wash mine with conditioner every other day. I only use shampoo as well once every week - ten days.

GrinAndTonic · 28/02/2015 23:28

I wash my hair once a week. Obviously more often if I have a special occasion, it's sweaty or dirty for done reason.
However I have very dry hair. It never gets oily.

Imisscheese · 28/02/2015 23:33

I think people just have different hair types. When I was pregnant I washed my hair every four days and it was fine, now I can just about get away with every other day. Dry shampoo is your friend. As are nice long evening baths! Grin

zombiesheep · 28/02/2015 23:35

I wash mine every other day or every 2 days, I use dry shampoo when needed.

However if I'm going out I will just wash it. Sometimes if I'm doing stuff all week I'll end up washing it, say, every day for 4 days straight. No biggie, I don't usually wash it every day so it copes fine. I don't have a set routine, I just try to leave as long as possible inbetween washes but sometimes life just gets in the way - it's not a strict ritual, just preference. I'd rather look my best than have greasy hair just because it interferes with my "washing schedule"

ouryve · 28/02/2015 23:37

I just tweak it so that I have nice clean hair when I especially want nice clean hair. It's dead short anyhow, so I can wash it in less than 5 minutes, if I need to. It gets washed 4 or 5 times a week, depending on how greasy it gets or how hot I am.

zombiesheep · 28/02/2015 23:37

I haven't washed mine since Thursday :o I will wash it tomorrow morning though.

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 23:39

I wash mine at the most twice a week because I'm doing the curly girl low poo thing... But before with normal shampoo and styling I had dry ends and greasy roots - just to give you an idea of what my hair is like, lol.

If I've got something on where I want to wash it so I can style it, I either wash it sooner than I normally would or, put it up and miss an extra day beforehand so I'm not washing it too close together.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 28/02/2015 23:50

I shampoo every 4 days and just condition it after two days. I have thick, wavy hair which won't dry properly overnight and takes 30 minutes to blast dry and 20 to straighten really quickly. I tried braiding it for waves once, and it took almost 48 hours for it to dry out completelyHmm

I used to wash every day when I was younger as it would be greasy every morning and just leave it wet for the day. I hated not being able to style it properly like my friends. I trained it with dry shampoo and lots of braided hair disguises one summer holidays and never looked back.

missmartha · 01/03/2015 00:07

Oh I always use a conditioner. I used to wash my hair everyday, and still do in the summer because my head sweats like the rest of my body.

I have even omitted shampoo and just used conditioner, but I do shower and wash my hair then, it''s hard not to shower and not wash your hair imo.

purplepenguin86 · 03/03/2015 01:14

I don't wash my hair every day - I just do it when I think I need to. Sometimes that might be 4 days, other times I wash it 2 days running. I go by how it feels rather than any set pattern. I do shampoo twice.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 03/03/2015 01:42

I genuinely thought that the " lather, rinse, repeat" was made up by marketing men to double shampoo sales!

Anyway, I go 3-4 days between washes, jiggle that around to accommodate special occasions, and love Batiste dry shampoo

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 03/03/2015 01:44

Not completely imagined - apparently a fictional marketing man Smile
