toning down blonde hair at home

hi, i have been bleaching my hair at home for about the last 6 months but my roots never lift enough first go and end up brassy. my re-growth is also horrendous.

i hate my hair at the moment, doesnt help i am 6 wks pg and covered in spots and tired and just generally hating my appearance.

i am thinking of toning it down, ideally altho i kp reading on here they are out, id love an ombre similar to khloe kardashians but ill have to do a home jobby amd wouldnt have a clue.

what colour could i put on bleached hair that i have been using purple shampoo on to tone it down to maybe a base 8 or even 9?

I bleach my hair at home too and often have the same problem with bright roots, I tend to use a toner to even it up so it matches the rest of my hair.

I can't really help with the ombre but I've been considering trying out ballyage to make my hair a bit less obvious when my roots are showing. There's a fab hairdresser on YouTube called ElleBangs who does various tutorials...I'm not sure if she's done ombre but worth checking

Congratulations on the pregnancy, I'm 17 weeks and had the same 'bleugh' stage, now I'm in the second trimester and feeling more energetic and less sick, hopefully you'll be the same Smile

At least you have some training, I just slap stuff on and hope for the best!

Please will you let me know how it goes? I plan on doing this in a month or so as I think I'd struggle with a full roots and toner session with a newborn!

I didn't have any symptoms (other than worrying) until around 9-10 weeks but feeling pants is certainly one Smile

gingerbreadmam · 26/02/2015 08:48

i have symptoms i guess but u just exoect to feel full on ill and a lot of the time i dont, however i do on occasion i guess. i had an mmc nov / dec las year and so far this one is totally different which is a good thing but doesnt stop the worrying.

yes im going to buy a dye today, will u need to tone it if u darken ur roots? mine should be fine and if u choose a colour close to u root colour im hoping it wont need touching up half as often?! will definitely let u know. if i can get dp to take a pic ill add it on.

Sorry to hear about your mmc Flowers

I'd love to see a pic if you can. I don't think will bother toning when I have darker roots as it will blend better I imagine. I think regrowth will be much less obvious so will be able to go longer between touching up.

Ellebangs also has a balyage root touch up video too which seems easy enough.

MuttersDarkly · 27/02/2015 12:21

When that happened to my hair the women I worked with said use a n Ash toner.

Had never heard of them, but it worked.

Not sure if that is still an option becuase the market is all confusing with Castings and other stuff, but anything temp and Ash blonde should tone the brassyness right down. Maybe focus your application at the roots and comb to the ends after five minutes or so ?

gingerbreadmam · 27/02/2015 12:29

thanks mutters I do use the purple shampoo which has the same sort of affect but it is still a noticeably different colour at the roots and just gets on my nerves more than anything.

I will try the ellebangs tutorial this weekend when dp is at football and hopefully that will solve my brassy roots problem and regrowth all in one go.

You could try a semi permanent hair dye in a darker blonde colour. After a previous home dye (bleach) disaster, that 's what my hair dresser did to me. It's fairly risk free given the semi permanent dye will eventually wash out, but will take some of the brasiness away.

gingerbreadmam · 27/02/2015 21:20

i thought of that bouncey but i have big brown roots and would still have roots i think if i did that. im going to try the bayalage and hope i dont regret it.

well i am sat here with my bayalage on developing. hope it works. didnt go down as far as ellebangs as my hairs quite short compared to hers.

also added my own little twist to it. picked a few bits of hair out, twisted and coloured right to the end. just to make it blend right down a little better (i hope). will try and add pics later (all being well Grin )

only took about 15 mins btw. bit fiddly when working on the side ur not 'handed' though.

So its all done. The technique is good. I used a base 7 and think i should have gone for a 6 tbh. The colour i got was called honey something, think a more flat or ash colour would have been better.

Ive got a pic not the best mind but here u go.

Oh that looks really good, it is very natural. Are you happy with the result?

I have waist length hair but think I will do the same as you and colour some sections right down too.

gingerbreadmam · 02/03/2015 08:01

yeah happy think ill buy a base 6 tomo and give it another go. i went down to just above my ear on the roots bit but might go a bit further this time to make it more noticeable.

yeah give it a go. could always use a 20 wash dye which would fade eventually if u werent too keen.

I bleach my hair too and when it goes brassy I mix bleach with shampoo so it's like a paste and put in a few drops of water and put it on for 5 minutes and it lifts out orangey colours. it's called a bleach bath I just mix it up until it looks right so might be worth a Google for measurements etc Smile

gingerbreadmam · 02/03/2015 08:33

ill bear that in mind for future reference, should help. hate it when it goes orangey.

thank you for the tip.
