How to clean white Converse trainers

pineapplewoman · 25/02/2015 12:06

DH dragged me on a muddy walk yesterday despite my protestations that I was wearing brand new white Converses (Angry!)
Predictably they are now spattered in mud. Does anyone know a way of cleaning them please? Would it be safe to put them through the washing machine? Thanks in advance Grin

Yep stick them in the washing machine, that's what I do, with some vanish.

And with a couple of old towels (white, not coloured!) so that the noise does not deafen you - I have done this successfully many times . Dry the shoes slowly near a heat source with either shoe trees in them or some padding to keep the shape .

I always put our converse in the machine . In a pillowcase although I'm not sure why it's just something my mum used to do with trainers Grin

Skivvywoman · 25/02/2015 15:15

I scrub mine with vanish soap and bleachy water and put in the machine

Notfootball · 25/02/2015 16:11

I think being in a pillowcase stops the toes from scuffing.

OneLittleLady · 25/02/2015 16:39

yep, in the washer with some vanish and they'll come up fine

ElizaPickford · 25/02/2015 16:52

I stick mine in a pillowcase and bung some whitener in there as well, job's a goodun Grin

Whiting toothpaste and a toothbrush can also clean them up nicely.

Thanks everyone! Grin

Never trusted putting them in the machine, would they not damage the drum?

I get an old toothbrush, fairy liquid and scrub at kitchen sink for 5 mins. Dry with newspaper stuffed down them by a sunny window.

pineapplewoman · 26/02/2015 16:58

UrbanVoltaire thanks, hmmm maybe I will try that first. Do not want to ruin the washing machine!

I put mine in the washing machine inside a pillowcase but with other washing too so that they are 'cushioned'. No damage to drum.

Remember that crappy shoe whitening liquid you used to get in the 80s? That didn't work did it?

pineapplewoman · 27/02/2015 13:21

TheCowThatLaughs I only remember the late 80s! Wonder if they still make it

TheCowThatLaughs · 27/02/2015 14:20

Oh I don't actually remember the 80s, I'm far too young in my dreams
I checked and you can get it off Amazon, maybe it's better now?

pineapplewoman · 27/02/2015 21:11

TheCowThatLaughs good call, shoe cleaning and 80s nostalgia in one [disappears off to Amazon] Grin

Those white eraser sponges (Magic Sponges) are good for cleaing trainers and converses. You get them in supermarkets.
