Starting the curly girl method

Advice please!

I have wavy hair which can be straightened easily but curls which are put in, drop out.

If brushed and left to dry it goes wavy/curly

If not brushed it goes crimpy and frizzy

I would like to start the curly girl method as the waves are crap and all the straightening is killing my hair. But I don't know where to start despite researching online.

Can someone please instruct me step by step like the dummy I am, including which products to use (cheap as possible please)

Many thanks in advance.

You really need to try 'hair plopping' - it gives the most AMAZING curls ..... I never would have believed the results if I hadn't seen them on my own hair!

take a look on Youtube (search: hair plopping!)

Interesting!

Do I wash and condition as normal?
Use any other products?
Brush first?

I've tried the curly girl method but it didn't suit my hair at all! Now I have adapted certain elements from it to suit my hair. This is what I do now:
Wash and condition with L'Oréal eversleek (best shampoo and conditioner ever, can not recommend it enough! )
Turn my head upside down and blast it with cold water.
Leave it dripping wet and gently scrunch in some boots own curl creme (the pink stuff, costs about £1.50)
Repeat with a blob of Umberto Giannini curl friends scrunching gel (pink tube, costs maybe £5.00)
"Plop" my hair with an old tshirt as suggested above.
Never ever brush it as that gives me terribly frizzy hair. And I try to touch it as little as possible while it dries.
Once it is completely dry I might have a few "crunchy" curls, if I do I just turn my head upside down and gently squeeze/scrunch it a few times et voila, lovely curls!
Hth :)

I only wash my hair once a month or so, in between I wet and then put on conditioner (one without any silicones like the Treseme products advertised as cone free). I use my finger tips to rub my scalp and wash out any dirt that way. Then I apply a silicone free serum and plop my hair with a t-shirt. Ta da! Great curls and little dryness. I only comb with conditioner on otherwise my hair goes a bit potty. Once a month I put on an intensive conditioner and shampoo it out.

Lots of people end up 'modifying' the curly method or dropping in and out of it, I think. It is worth starting it according to the 'rules' though and seeing if it works for you. This is a good introduction -

This site has a list of products on the high street in the UK (check the labels though in case of change of ingredients) -

justkeeponsmiling I do exactly the same method but with John Frieda Dream Curls shampoo and conditioner! I do it at night and sleep with the t-shirt on (usually pull it off during the night and lay out curls over the pillow) and I have lovely sleek voluminous curls in the morning!

The t-shirt plopping really helps if your curls tend to fall out or get weighed down during the day. Mine is looong and the first 5-6 inches get straightened out by the weight when I don't plop, especially if I let it dry naturally loose.

My skin reacts to Naked products,I hate Body Shop Rainforest smell and Tresemme naturals made it flyaway. I'm not sure how CG the John Frieda products are but they are doing a good job at the moment.

That dormroom site is great, thanks temporary. Going to have a good read of it, buy a couple of products and will get started! Will update as I go.

Think I will need to comb my hair through with conditioner in it as it likes to try and put itself into dreadlocks if I don't brush it.

I do a CG version, currently with Palmers Coconut shampoo and conditioner, and then their leave-in conditioner, all of which are sulphate-free. At the moment I just use a bit of VO5 styling crime and leave it to dry. It isn't perfect, but it's better than the pat 20yrs!

I did go to Matt James a few months back and whilst I was impressed with how he did it, it didn't feel achievable for me at home and it gave a slightly artificial look ( used to it being messier!)
