Mineral makeup/Lily Lolo advice appreciated.

I'm having problems with my eyes reacting to the usual BB & CC creams I've been wearing, possibly a reaction to SPF.

Until recently I didn't wear makeup day to day but I am over 40 now and feel I need some coverage.

Having done a bit of looking around I think mineral makeup might be worth a try. Lily Lolo looks to be in my price range and I like the idea of a reasonably priced starter kit.

The reviews are quite mixed but a quick Mumsnet search shows it to be quite highly thought of.

Has anyone used it recently?
Will my occasional dry patches be a problem?

Also I am not sure which kit to try. I have dark brown hair and eyes, tan easily and have a yellow tone. My face is the palest part of me.
The No.7 foundation match put me at Cool Vanilla.

I'm thinking Light/Medium. Does that sound right?

Thanks

Well I am Cool Vanilla as well but with different hair and eyes to you. I used Barely Buff (winter) and In the Buff (summer) from Lily Lolo. I would try some testers before buying the big pot. You can't really fault the colour range or their efforts to give you a match.

I used it for a while and then again at the weekend and remembered what I don't like about it.

1 All that buffing especially near my nose is a pain, if I press too hard near my nose it drips.

2 There are certain areas of my face that it won't stick, just under my eyebrows is one. I then look a bit patchy.

Certainly worth a try with their sample pots though, lots of people love it.

Thanks Joseph, that's very helpful. I had a look again and the sample pots are a great idea. Do you think the finishing powder is necessary? And is the tinted better than the translucent?

I've also looked at Bare Minerals and would be interested in hearing opinions on that brand too.

I wouldn't bother with the finishing powder, it's a good one to use on liquid foundation but not necessary on their mineral foundation. Perhaps if you have greasy skin? Again I think they do sample pots of the finishing powder.

I had my face done at a BM counter and I wasn't impressed; the colour wasn't right and it seemed to separate on my skin. BM is hugely popular on here though.

I was happy to use LL because it's so much cheaper and the tester pots can be used at home in private.

I love Lily Lolo and use it every day. I'm very pale, beyond the range of normal foundations, so I wear Porcelain or China Doll in winter and Blondie in summer. My skin is dry and I used to have dry patches. I thought mineral foundation wouldn't work for me but I was wrong.

I prep my face with a serum or moisturizer or sunscreen about 10 min before applying mineral foundation. I buff a lot - if not, it will look cakey. Use minute amounts (1/2 rice grain or less), swirl and tap before applying. I have quite small features so I use a baby kabuki for the nose area. When done, I spritz my face with Avene thermal water. This way, I avoid a tight feeling.

The buffing controls my dry patches much better than foundation and I quite enjoy it. Very occasionally I moisturize with Eucerin. All in all, my skin is in much better condition than before.

I have samples of three finishing powders but have not needed them. One of them feels like grated glass on my skin. The concealer is useful for occasional blemishes, but watch out: the palest shade is ghostly pale.

Jacla you sound like you have very similar colouring to myself. I am NC15 in Mac and Bone something in EL. I ordered 3 sample pots from Lily Lolo last night in Blondie, Barely Buff and Warm Peach. You can ask customer services for advice online but an NC15 had already asked. I just picked the same ones. I have a feeling I may be barely buff in winter and warm peach in summer.

Pompomsandtassels · 23/02/2015 20:12

I'm cool vanilla and I use China doll. No dry patch problems :)

Taystee · 23/02/2015 20:19

I really like BareFaced Beauty for Mineral foundation. I get a better finish and staying power than Lily Lolo and a better colour match than bare minerals. Think it might be cheaper than Lily Lolo too

I use Lilly Lolo, Blondie year round due to hiding from sun like a non-nocturnal vampire.

I do get dry patches, and find the best way for them to not end up all highlighted is a routine of Lots Of Mousturiser, with a good ten minutes to sink in, before the "tap tap swirl" magic happens.

I like it because I can't feel it on my face. Having to use a BB cream at the moment cos the LL has run out and I can't face the post office to stick some money on my visa electron. Which is the one downside of LL, having to buy by post via the lame Italian postal donkey.

I bought the finishing powder, but never used it. Also got the "give yourself an illuminated look" finishing one. But abandoned it cos it looked like Tinkerbell had farted violently in my face.

I like the eye shadows. But spill a lot.

Love the blusher. Athe only one I have found that is "blue " enough to avoid the instant tango look.

I want a second kabuki, cos they are fab. But I though the blusher brush was utter utter shit and I've had better off the cheapo market stall in Town.

Their really thin eye brush thingie is good when wet for turning all the eye shadows into eyeliner. Which is nice cos pencils drag a bit these days.

My sister like the lipgloss.

I turned her onto it too. We are both of an age where make up free causes too much "oh, are you not feeling very well ?" but neither of us enjoy the clarty feeling of normal foundation anymore.

daftyburd · 24/02/2015 22:01

My sample pots came today. Out of the three Blondie is a very nice match. Lasted well through the day and didn't stick to the dry patch on my cheek. Will see how it performs at work tomorrow.
Has anyone tried the blush away corrector from Lily Lolo? Green or yellow primers do nowt. I am currently using an NYX green concealer which is good but my rosacea has improved a lot recently. I don't need such thick cover.

MuttersDarkly · 24/02/2015 22:07

I've used both the yellow and green correctors.

Meh.

It might be me being cack handed but I managed to make myself look like my eyes had jaundice and my face was suffering from a strange greenish rash.

Those pots are still almost full years after purchase.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 24/02/2015 22:23

I'm a Blondie here too! All year round, tho tbh I probably could have gone even paler this winter. It can highlight dry patches, I'm having to use more moisturiser lately with the cold weather so I've not had any trouble. Been using it for about 2 years, I think its excellent value for money. I use a kabuki brush to apply as well, but have done a bit with my fingertips in an emergency.

Is there an illuminating finishing powder? Ooh might try a bit of that next time I order.

MuttersDarkly · 25/02/2015 20:52

Daryl

Be aware. It is very sparkly.

I felt like a bauble.

I think it's probably great for younger skin. They can get away with being all bright and shiney,

mrssmooth · 14/05/2015 20:55

I got the Bareminerals starter kit and love it (In medium beige). After nosing around for bm reviews I came across Lily Lolo, saw the sample pots and ordered them. I only got them on Tuesday and have used two of the three sample colours, the matte finishing powder and the silk finishing powder. I think I prefer it to bare minerals! I have found the lily lolo lasts longer and gives better coverage than bare minerals.

The finishing powders are lovely too - the silk finish one is more or less exactly the same as mineral veil. I'm going to try the third colour tomorrow but think it may be too pale. The fact that it is half the price of bm is a good thing. The downside is not being able to see the rest of the range as it only seems to be available online - I'd love to try the blushes and eye shadows but don't want to end up with loads of products that I won't use because the colours aren't right for me :/

mewkins · 14/05/2015 22:23

I really like it - use barely buff as I am pale with yellow/cool tones. I would also recommend the kabuki brushes (the mini one is really good with the blusher) and blusher in Flushed is a lovely colour.

MamaMary · 14/05/2015 22:33

Hello ladies!

I wear Lily Lolo Blondie Foundation on my oily skin and really like it.

I do not recommend the concealer, though - it doesn't absorb into my skin.

My question is - what is the finishing powder?? Never heard of it till this thread. What does it do - is it worth it? And if I'm a Blondie in foundation which finishing powder would be right for me? I can't work out why the matt one is white like talc??

FrugalFashionista · 14/05/2015 22:39

I have had a finishing powder sample for about a year and am still not done with it. I guess it is mattifying. There are three altogether, one or two are white and one a nude color. Some of them felt a bit gritty. I sometimes use the mattifying one to powder my t zone or to set concealer but don't need it as a part of my foundation routine,
