She is using this herbal essence one & it's OK for when she wears her hair in a pony (she has an afro) but she needs something a bit more defining for wearing it out

Any suggestions?

Tresemme do a conditioner for curly hair you could try

ZaraW · 21/02/2015 06:26

Have a look at www.naturallycurly.com for their recommendations a lot of their articles feature afro hair. I use deva conditioner which works well for me but she might need more moisture? Maybe shea conditioner. Have a look on the site you should get lots of good ideas.

Would a gel give her more definition?

Once it's completely dry and 'set', she can scrunch out the crunchiness.

I use Body Shop Rainforest Moisture conditioner or Sainsbury's coconut conditioner. Both CG friendly. My hair is 3a/b though.

Also is she using shampoo? That's very drying (as I'm sure you know anyway).

Does she leave enough conditioner in? Lorraine Massey (CG method) says that most Curlies don't use enough conditioner.

My hair looks better after shampooing rather than cleansing with conditioner. I asked Mat James when I had an appointment with him last year and he said it is down to personal preference and he prefers to use shampoo.

As long as the shampoo is sulphate free you should be ok my hair is in great condition.

She does use shampoo but mixed 50:50 with conditioner - she washes less than once a week

We've bought some conditioner in the same range as the one she uses - as we are a bit scared!!

We are so close to perfect - we've bought a lighter one she can use more of & the silky one that might be better

I don't know

The Naked leave-in conditioner is great, and I'm liking the Palmers Coconut shampoo and conditioner at the mo - all sulfate-free

KatyMac · 21/02/2015 23:40

Is that the herbal essences Naked range or a different Naked range?

Naked is a different range - only sold in Boots. Most of it is silocone and sulphate free.but but careful, the confitioner for curly hair is not silicone free.

KatyMac · 22/02/2015 13:00

we tried this a while back & it didn't work

She's been wearing it out & it dries out too quickly

Conditioner wise, I use either Tresseme Naturals which i buy in huge 900ml bottles for less than a fiver or the Herbal Essences naked range. I use a lot of the tresseme as it's thinner than the herbal essences but is great for co washing as it's quite light and rinses out easily

Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Scrunching Jelly is great for 'setting' curls after washing. I don't have afro hair but I do have curls and find this great for defining the curl in my hair. I apply it to damp hair and then either air dry or dry with a diffuser and then 'scrunch out the crunch' when it's totally dry

Laquila · 22/02/2015 15:35

OneLittleLady - do you find that the curl maintains though, after scrunching out? By the next day mine is all over the place!

KatyMac · 22/02/2015 17:59

DD's is always a good shape just dry and starting to frizz Sad

We will get it right - it looks amazing after washing & OK after re-conditioning with watered down conditioner.....perfection is out there!!
