High-waister bikinis - yay or nay?

What say you, stylish ones?

5 years after having twins, I am still clinging onto the hope that there is a bikini out there that will look good on me.

I started trying to wear those but they made me look a bit like a weeble because of my small norks. If your norks are on the larger side, they may work for you.

Bonsoir · 19/02/2015 22:18

I think they can look great.

but yesterday I was in the new season's swimwear department of a very swish Parisian department store and it is all about one-piece swimsuits this year...

JohnCusacksWife · 19/02/2015 22:33

Only if you have a very flat stomach. A hint of roundness and they just look matronly.

SgtBlousey · 19/02/2015 22:35

Bonsoir does this mean I won't look quite so prudishly British should I venture onto a French beach anytime soon?

mammmamia · 19/02/2015 22:45

johncusask if I had a flat stomach I wouldn't be wanting to hide it under a high waisted bikini Grin

Providing your swimsuit and accessories are suitably glamorous!

I always wear one piece and have several on the go - mostly plain colours from Eres - and lots of accessories. I love beachwear!

SgtBlousey · 19/02/2015 23:12

A Carrefour bag for life won't cut it as a glamorous accessory, will it :(

mammmamia · 20/02/2015 00:13

Bonsoir can you link to a few? I got some good ones last year - nicely cut, plain colours like olive green, but looking at the photos I hate how I look in them!

If you've got a big belly and a thick waist, they're a complete no no.

I like them, I'm hour glass figured with big boobs and an alright bum but a bit of a belly so I find they really suck it in and show off my waist. Really depends on your figure, I also think the shape of the top makes a difference too. I wouldn't wear a high waist bottom with an unstructured top. You wanna push the tummy in and the boobs up to show off the waistGrin

Bonsoir · 20/02/2015 07:16

I'm nowhere near a computer and won't be for a while - will try to find some nice one pieces later. However, I think one pieces are best in red or yellow. Olive green, navy, grey and black can look very drab on the beach unless you are a Goddess with an Amazonian body and Rapunzel locks!

DamsonInDistress · 20/02/2015 07:55

If they suit your figure and you have the boobs to counterbalance the look then they can be gorgeously 50's in style. Two stone lighter and two children ago I used to rock this look - sheer glamour!

itsaysonthetin · 20/02/2015 08:03

I think they can be hard to pull off - with high waisted jeans or trousers, usually the fabric is very stiff, so it really holds everything in and gives a lovely shape. But with bikini's, the fabric just isn't thick of strong enough. It might be able to give a bit of shape, but not that much.

If you're conscious over your stomach, how about a tankini?

carrie74 · 20/02/2015 10:35

I think they can look amazing, but more often than not, they tend to draw attention to the area you're trying to cover up. I have to say, looking around on beaches in the US and Europe, unless you're surrounded by beautiful teens, there are all shapes and sizes, and other nationalities seem less hung up about covering up, and just go with it. I've tried to do this too, and actually, despite being worried about how I'll look when I'm trying on at home, I feel I blend in more once I'm actually on the beach when wearing a normal bikini. You can usually spot the Brits: covered up with massive bikini pants or unflattering one pieces (agree with Bonsoir about dark colours looking drab). And maxi dresses.

DialsMavis · 20/02/2015 12:08

Last summer I thought a high waisted bikini would answer my prayers, suffice to say it didn't. I love the look but unfortunately it accentuated rather than hid the bits I'm less than happy with

leedy · 20/02/2015 13:00

I have a freakishly long torso and DD boobs and got two for my hols last year on the advice of Oprah magazine (never argue with Oprah), where they suggested that they work really well for my body shape - tankinis tend to gape unattractively at just the least flattering bit of my tummy, and low-rise bikinis just seem to expose endless miles of torso. Got one from Toast and one high-waist control panel bottom from Figleaves to go with an existing halter top, both looked great and quite "bombshell"-y. I have a nice one piece as well, but like two-pieces for just faffing around on the beach (for one thing, it's easier to go to the loo...).

Behooven · 20/02/2015 13:08

They suit me too, but I'm old and fat
The 50s style ones from For Luna for example have a bit of vavavoom about them.

Kiffykaffycoffee · 20/02/2015 20:37

I think they'd hold your tummy in a bit but then it would all spill out over the top. I prefer one pieces with a bit of ruching across the tummy. And a bright jazzy pattern hides a multitude Grin
