going to talk to my hairdresser about going grey!

I had an appointment next week for cut and regrowth. I've just cancelled the regrowth part of it (kept the cut) and am going to talk to her about going grey!

I've been dyeing it chestnut brown (permanent) for years and I'm sick of the roots. I reckon I'm about 65% grey at front, sides and crown. Not sure about the back. I've got a short bob and it grows fast, but not willing to go much shorter. I'm prepared to put in the effort with different dyeing strategies and high/low lights whist it grows out. Not prepared to look like a badger though.

Feel exhilarated, but rather odd. I'm 43 and people usually guess I'm about 10 years younger. I quite fancy looking like a young woman gone prematurely (and stylishly - ha!) grey. Not quite so sure I fancy suddenly looking my age. Or worse yet.... Older....

Hmm, I'm sceptical, because you have said you want to go grey and she has talked you into a full head of highlights plus colouring the non highlighted hair with a permanent colour! I'm waiting to go grey too, partly because I feel I'm becoming allergic to the permanent dye. I wish I'd stuck with just high lights. My hairdresser talked me into putting a permanent on the non highlighted bits. Then an all over permanent colour. I think it might be better to use a colour than washes out over a number of washes until the roots grow out. (And that will be much cheaper too!)

I too would be wary. According to a hairdresser friend of mine (and experienced, very fussy and particular bottle blonde herself) getting rid of the "warm" tones is nigh on impossible - they are the last bits to go - so I would question the condition of your hair if she were to achieve this - she would have to strip all the colour out completely and then go cool. In addition, as jingle says adding another solid colour just delays/shifts your badger line - so not sure what it is achieving tbh. You may be able to go longer until the next root touch up - but you will still need one iyswim.

I (yesterday) did the going grey a different, scary way. I got all my hair chopped off. I had about 2cm of regrowth (so cool brown/white roots and then warm brown solid colour). The fab colourist, helped by the fact I was going for the chop just fed through loads of really fine highlights on the top (ie just bleach) and then toned them white/grey. She focused more around my hairline at the front to make a feature and it is naturally where I am more grey. I am potentially now looking at one more chop and they are done. It is drastic though. Am a bit wigged out by it this morning - and ultimately want to grow my hair/curls longer again. But now I feel much more natural. The fake warm look to my hair has gone. I now look eek greying. But I like it. freaking out a bit too thread/photos here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please
