Knotty Hair

My hair is driving me crazy.

It's quite thick, with a natural wave, and there's a lot of it. Whenever it gets pay the bottom of my neck (which it has to be, I look a dog's dinner with an unmanageable crop) it basically goes into one big fat dreadlock on the back of my neck.

I wash everyday, hair is coloured red. I hate going to the hair dressers! i haven't found a good one since moving house and am fine trimming my own hair. I'm not particularly au fait with different hair products and what they do, but is there anything I can slap on it that would minimise knots without making it greasy?

My hair did this. Then the hair dresser said it was dried out. Told me to wash it less and use a deep conditioner once a week but to wash twice and then condition no more than alternate days. I use Pantene BB cream only on the ends and that seems to do the trick. I also now brush my hair several times in the day.

  1. Don't wash your hair every day.
  1. Brush your hair throughout the day.
  1. Condition weekly with pure coconut oil, soak hair in it overnight (cover pillow in a towel) and wash out in the morning.

I think if you do the above 3 things your hair will be fine again - do you have a gentle shampoo and conditioner you are happy with?

NimpyWWindowmash · 15/02/2015 10:50

Plait your hair before you go to sleep.

It is what women have done for centuries

BadPoet · 15/02/2015 11:05

All above and consider a silk pillowcase - my hair is fine and tangly and it has made such a difference.

Glittermouse · 15/02/2015 11:13

My hair is thick and gets knotty, to minimise this I wash it as little as possible every 3/4 days. I also deep condition once a week, loads of conditioner wrap head in cling film with a towel wrapped around that and leave on overnight. Also use a tangle teezer.

Plonkysaurus · 15/02/2015 13:38

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Bit scared of not washing my hair everyday though I accept my hair is probably a bit dry and needs a break. it has always been this way though, coloured or not, long or short, as long as I can remember.

I've been using tresemme and hair had gone more straw like lately so am open to suggestions. Have bought some argan oil for my hair. Cue DH wandering around Boots talking about Jason and the Arganoils Hmm

I would say conditioner is the key. It needs to be combed through and left for a couple of minutes every time you wash it.

Go and have it cut properly as well. Ask people who have nice looking hair where they get theirs done.

Germgirl · 15/02/2015 14:04

Mine is very knotty. I've bern using the VO5 Extraordinary Oil after washing which helps a lot. Try ti only wash it twice a week and try a brush like this which really helps to remove the knots.
I can't wear my hair down or in a ponytail for long because i get the dreaded neck deadlock so I tend to wear it clipped up or in a bun or plait. And I plait it at night which helps a bit.

Plonkysaurus · 15/02/2015 14:12

I really don't want to go to the hair dressers. I'm fine trimming my own hair and get it restyled every so often. This is more about managing it daily.

I do try combing it in the shower when is had conditioner on for a few minutes, but invariably give up because I can't spend 15 minutes combing before I just get to angry and give up.

I will order a tangle teezer and see if that helps.

Tangle Teezers are really good, it should help.

bluewisteria · 15/02/2015 16:15

I use Organix coconut shampoo and conditioner, from boots. It's amazing... Plus coconut oil as a serum. It has revolutionised my hair. Might try the silk pillowcase too.

NimpyWWindowmash · 15/02/2015 17:29

Tresemmee killed my hair, it is horrible harsh stuff.

Any other brand is better!

ICantFindAFreeNickName · 15/02/2015 17:32

Another vote for the Tangle Teezer - amazing product

TheHappinessTrap · 15/02/2015 18:09

OP, I wash my hair most work days. I use a deep conditioning mask, the ones that advise weekly or monthly use, every time I wash. I wash my hair first so the conditioner gets to stay on for about 5 minutes, I also then often use a hair serum. My hair feels clean and not weighed down but it also feels looked after by the deep conditioner, and hairdressers always remark on the quality of my hair. The only time I get a tangle is at my neck when I wear something that traps hair, like a necklace so I've stopped wearing those.

Plonkysaurus · 17/02/2015 10:23

Thanks for all the advice I got here!

I switched my shampoo and conditioner to the Organix Macadamia nut stuff, which feels nice and light compared to Tresemme, managed to get the comb through easily when it was caked in conditioner, and used a tiny amount of argan oil on it after towel drying. I washed my hair yesterday morning, plaited it, brushed before bed, brushed this morning and plaited it again. Daily washing will be a hard habit to break, but my hair isn't greasy (yet) or knotty.

I've yet to get my tangle teezer but it's still on the list.

Treat your hair to some oily goodness - argan oil is my personal favourite, but I've heard that coconut oil does wonders too. Rub them into your hair before bed and leave overnight.

Also an egg mask is meant to be great, just wash it out with cool water to avoid scrambled egg hair!
