Wish I could wear a sari...

Just been looking at next door's washing - 3 saris hanging on the line... they look so elegant and beautiful compared to my line full of jeans!!!

Why is western clothing so bulky??

(Yes, I know I could wear skirts, but its still not the same effect...)

Erm I think it is the cold......

My aunt is married to a man from Kerala and she wears saris most of the time now.

It did take her a while to learn to wear one properly, w/lots of help from her SILs and the Indian community in Austin.

But she never looked back.

Austin is hot most of the year and saris are the perfect garment, IHO.

She has dress saris for formal occassions.

I couldn't figure out how to wear one to save myself.

Honestly, Tia (aunt in spanish) has some that are sooooo exquisite it's a delight just to hold hte fabric.

Flamebat · 23/10/2006 11:39

I don't tend to feel the cold . I have enough problems trying to tie my hugabub on me... I dread to think what I'd be like with that much fabric

Do we think my neighbours would get upset if I went and held their washing

some of the sari's are absolutly stunning.
i now live in a very asian populated area and have seen some of the parties and weddings, they are just so beautifull.

i once had one of those asian tunics with the light trousers underneath, it was so comfortable and lightwieght, great for summer BBQ's

now sadly i am way too fat for them.

I was in Nepal recently and looked in awe at the clothes of even the village women - couldn't work out how they stayed up on the shoulder all day till a gust of wind revealed that even the most sophisticated ladies use a safety pin.

Also noticed that anyone doing anything even slightly strenuous or physical wrapped the dupatta (ie over-shoulder bit) round their waist again rather than across and over shoulder so were basically wearing a skirt and blouse.

Easier to wear (and much easier to ride a motorbike in) are salwar kameez.
There's also a cheating sari-type outfit called a lengha (literally 'skirt') which is a top and skirt with a separate shawl - you can either wear shawl seperately or tuck one corner into waistband, wrap round and pleat over shoulder to approximate look of sari with less hassle (highly recommended for dumb white girls at weddings )

I think saris are more bulky than western clothing. My dp's elderly gran now lives in tracky bottoms as she is getting on a bit, and can't be doing with the hassle of saris. She saves them for special occassions now or trips to mandir. They are beautiful though. We went to the diwali celebrations in trafalgar square last sat and some of the outfits worn by the dancers, tv reporters and the crowds were gorgeous.

I love wearing my sari's, they are so elegant and beautiful, but a bit difficult in winter here in the UK - you get draughts up your back, have to wear sandals, not shoes, not v nice in November, esp if it's raining!

p.s. Welcome back Mrs Badger, was wondering where you'd got to - hope you had fun in Nepal.

MrsBadger · 23/10/2006 12:09

re draughts, in Nepal when the weather got nasty I saw people wearing longer-length, long-sleeved blouses tucked into their waistbands, particularly those Nepali/Tibetan wrap blouses . Even saw some people in polonecks - not as elegant as a short choli but a sight warmer!
