Oily skin skincare recommendations

I'm approaching 40 and my skin is getting oilier by the day: Enlarged pores on my cheeks and a chin which make up slides off. Sad

Any recommendations? I've been using la Roche Posey recently but don't love it. I can cover the worst with primer and double wear but would really like a more effective treatment

I don't know what your budget is, but most of my skincare is Origins and they have a range called Zero Oil. If you can get to a counter, they will try the products on you (if you can bear the lack of glamour Grin) and give you some samples...

Origins Zero Oil

Dr Hauschka cleansing cream and clarifying oil - specifically to balance oily skin. www.dr.hauschka.com/en_GB/products/clarifying-day-oil/

Budget not an issue - have decided spending ££££ on clothes is waste of time whilst my skin looks rubbish so prepared to spend whatever it takes

It's the bloody hormones. I'm in my mid 40s and have this problem too.

The key is not to overload or aggravate the skin any further. Try to stay away from heavy anti ageing creams and if you want anti ageing go for a light gentle serum instead ( Laura Merciers multi vitamin serum is quite good as it is not too harsh).

I personally have decided not to bother with the anti ageing bit anymore but just focus on the pores and spots. The best products I have found for my skin are the Clarins Lotus facial oil at night time and the Hydra lotion with SPF15 during the day (I suppose the SPF still gives you some anti ageing benefit).

When I had oily skin I used decleor Ylang Ylang oil, night balm & skin fluid (moisturiser).
Very very effective and nice to use.

MrsTShelby · 14/02/2015 09:48

I use Alpha H liquid gold - in 2 weeks it has transformed my skin.

I also use Simple oil free/balancing moisturiser in day and Boots no 7 at night - serum and moisturiser - on days when I don't use the Alpha H.

Primer wise I use Clarins flash balm (application is key to getting this right) or Clarins primer. Use Clarins everlasting foundation over the top.

Am going to try that cleanser by Lush next - Herbalism and also Angels on bare faces as my friend swears by them. Also want to try their Enzymion moisturiser.

I do also take vitabotics skin supplements but don't think they are that effective really.

PastPerfect · 15/02/2015 12:52

Thanks all - I'm going to look into some of these suggestions.

Btw mrs I used flashbalm for about twenty years and recently - on a total whim - started using no 7 airbrush primer which is amazing: lifts my skin and gives makeup far more staying power than flashbalm ever did.

MrsTShelby · 15/02/2015 14:19

I will try the No 7 primer then as although I love the flash balm I use it for evenings out as I don't find it has the staying power for long days.

Other things I use are the Superfacialist vitamin c oil as first part of double cleansing.

I am a total product junkie though and always looking for the holy grail item!

Madamecastafiore · 15/02/2015 14:22

Cerave wash and moisturiser. It's the holy grail of oily skin products and the bonus is it has a good SPF which is mucho importanto at your age.

PastPerfect · 15/02/2015 18:29

mrst let me know how you get on with the primer...

MadameC I'm weeping at the "at your age" comment. In my mind I'm only 21 have morphed into my mother Grin

shop like idea of declor but can't get over idea that oil won't make my skin oilier. Is it for use in evening?

Madamecastafiore · 15/02/2015 18:34

I'm slightly older than you!

magicgirl74 · 15/02/2015 18:47

Are you sure you have oily skin? For years i have been treating my skin as oily/spot prone.Iv recently turned 40 and was fed up with my make up slidding off so i decided to traet myself and had skin analysis.i had to bring everything i was using on my face(mainly stuff for spotty greasy skin) and the lady doing my analysis was horrified and more or less told me to ditch everything i was using as my skin wasnt oily it is normal to combination.Apparently using stuff for geasy spotty skin dries it out and then the skin over compansates by producing more oil hence my make up sliding off.I was told all you need is a good cleanser, toner and moisturiser im using clarins which i like and never use harsh scrubs(which i was using frequently)Apparently my skin is quiet good and i have no wrinkles yet so i dont need an eye cream and i was also told not to use a night cream????which im suprised about(and i am still using)so it might be worth getting your skin checked in case your aggrivating it,its the best money iv spent recently and will probably save me money in the long run.

PastPerfect · 15/02/2015 18:57

MadameC I know (I've seen your previous posts) i didn't take your comment as a slight I'm just in denial Grin Blush

HazleNutt · 15/02/2015 19:12

no, oil won't make your skin oilier. I was exactly like a previous poster, always using drying mattifying oily skin stuff - it just dries skin out and makes it produce more oil. If you use oils, skin thinks it has enough and calms down.

Kundry · 15/02/2015 19:22

Am also 40 with combination skin and spots. I have stuck to oil-free but for me the key winner has been acid toners and a non-foaming cleanser.

I love Cetaphil - bland and non-stripping.

Acid toner wise, almost anything has worked. Have used Effaclar Duo, Paula's Choice 2% BHA, even Clearasil pads when travelling. I prefer salicylic acid as I tend to blackheads but acid is fab. No more spots at all - it was a miracle when the last one went.

Use SPF in the day and didn't bother moisturising at night until I went a bit crazy and decided to do Retin-A and then I needed to. But there is no law that says you need to moisturise so if you think you don't need to - don't!

When I did use moisturiser I went for Cerave - it is marvellous as per prev poster and is also my SPF of choice. Would expect their cleanser to be good as well.

Shop · 15/02/2015 20:05

No, my skin (more normal to combination now) has always loved oils.
The decleor Ylang Ylang is oil in a morning under day cream & a balm at night. It's definitely for oily skin though & would dry out a more normal skin.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 15/02/2015 20:34

I'm 37. I used to have oily, acne prone skin with a spotty, dry and flaky forehead. Lovely. I've turned it around in the last year by:

  1. Cutting out sugar and refined carbs
  2. Using a balm cleanser (Emma Hardie is amazing, I've tried cheaper ones but they all leave a residue). In the evening I second cleanse with something cheap and non foaming.
  3. Alpha H liquid gold twice weekly.
  4. I was using a salycilic acid toner but I'm seeing if I can do without it!
  5. Moisturiser in the day and a clarins facial oil at night; I change then depending on how my skin is at the time.
  6. Avoid Shea butter like the plague.

Caroline Hirons normally has it spot on.

JamesBlonde1 · 15/02/2015 20:37

Simple clear skin oil balancing moisturiser is very good. I've used it for about 2 years now and I'm very happy with it.

itsnothingoriginal · 15/02/2015 20:40

I really like Korres for oily skin (Greek homeopathic range). Recently changed to La Roche Posey but finding it very drying and my skin definitely over compensating by becoming even more oily as per the comments above. Will be switching back to the Korres again once I've used up the v expensive Effeclar duo!!

avagosling · 16/02/2015 15:30

Have a look at OCM (oil cleansing method), it's fab for rebalancing the skin: www.fushi.co.uk/healthy-lifestyle-news/oil-cleansing-method-for-glowing-skin/. Also use rosehip oil every night. Your skin starts overproducing oil when it is too dry.

Also there might be hormonal issues, chaste tree and borage oil are great for rebalancing hormones.
