Auburn/red hair dye

I've mid brown hair that is greying at the speed of light. I have been colouring it auburn for several months (Excellence Natural Auburn or Recital Bohemian Auburn - which struggles to cover the grey roots for some reason) and I like it...but I'm wondering if the 'orange' tone of auburn suits my colouring (pale skin, quick to go red, blue eyes).

I spent my 1990's teenage years throwing all sorts of mahogany and plum at my hair and now fear that purple hue you get with a lot of red dye.

I am considering opting for something a bit more 'true red' essentially steer a million miles from 'aubergine' but not go pillar box red.

A couple of my good friends dye their hair different shades of red and look amazing but their colouring is nothing like mine.

Give me your 'red but not teenager-with-Glints' (remember them) suggestions people

I'm a fellow fake redhead, and I use Wella Colour touch. I've had a few different versions - it's a salon dye so you can mix up a version to suit you. I like shades 66/45 and 55/54. I'm currently using a mix of the two as the 66 was a little too orange and the 55 as a sniff too purple. You can also get intensifiers to make it even brighter.

It works out cheaper for me, as I have long hair and need 2-3 boxes of shop bought dye to cover it.

I'm probably not a million miles from <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/1e/5b/a3/1e5ba3bcb6d121f499be90d37e0b4648.jpg&imgrefurl=www.pinterest.com/badel671/red-hair/&h=353&w=236&tbnid=iO_q2LO6JUn1xM:&zoom=1&docid=a1kuBgD9fUI54M&ei=NCveVL2WKoKNywPptILoBA&tbm=isch&ved=0CD0QMygHMAc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this in the 66/45 and a bit more like this with the mix of the two. I did lighten my hair first but it's naturally super dark

That sounds interesting, do you need to be a hairdresser to get that Challenged? Can you blend any shade? I fancy 'bold but could potentially be found in nature'

I buy it online (cheaper!) but my local Sally Salon Services sell it. You need the tubes of colour and the colour touch emulsion. There are two strengths, they recommend the 4% for reds.

It is only a semi perm, but personally I dont mind that as reds need redone every five minutes anyway.

shade chart

(note, I have found the reds brighter than the shade chart. Google image the dye e.g. "wella colour touch 66/45" to get a better idea, there;s normally some good photos of it on people)

Marvellous! Thank you. Is there anything in a chemist worth buying?

Shamelessly bumping for advice from those bottle redheads that rely on high street chemists and the like, tell me of your true but naturalish reds.....

No plum! Oh I have grey - lots of it, it covers really well

I changed to a more brownish colour a few months ago and got told off by the girl who cuts my hair as even sheloloves the morello once she accepted I was too tight to get my hair coloured at her salon

Blue eyes, fair to medium complexion but my friend is quite dark skinned / brown eyes and suits it too.

ZaraW · 14/02/2015 12:10

What about henna? www.justforheadheads "Red" shade is lovely. I've used it in the past when I want to go darker and it works well but I have natural red hair.

VodkaKnockers · 14/02/2015 16:11

I'm currently a bottle red. Naturally I'm a medium brown with blue eyes and I'm very pale.

I used this

How have you got one stars with your quest

starsandguitars · 22/02/2015 09:22

I've just used the last of my auburn stash to even it up and then I think the Garnier Nutrisse in Morello will be given a whirl..... I'm tempted by the Olia dark red but wonder if it might be a bit bright....
