Make up for 40+ that isn't winged eyeliner and red lips?

Help, please! I want to wear more make-up (i.e. some) but don't want to look "made up" and I'm completely clueless. I bought a brownish Kate Moss lipstick that's really nice but I don't know what else to do with my face...

I've watched a few youtube videos (Zoella, the Beauty Dept etc) for hints, but I'm not really the target audience, and I don't really want to do the red lip and winged black eyeliner thing. Any recommendations for websites/videos etc that could show me how to look like a grown-up? What make-up do you wear to walk the dog/do the school run/go to work that doesn't look too young or vampy?

Sorry OP - recalled some good Bobbi Brown/Salli Hughes videos on the Guardian website. But, having taken a peek, both winged eye liner and red lips seem to feature!

Try Lisa Eldridge and ruth crilly on YouTube.

nequidnimis · 13/02/2015 09:48

Have you thought about making an appointment for a tutorial at a make up counter?

I've had these at Lancôme, Benefit and Chanel counters. In all cases they were very helpful and gave me the natural daytime look I asked for. They'll try to sell you everything they use, but I just bought the few products I liked on each occasion.

Buy the urban decay naked set - it is the best investment my mother (42) and I (24) have ever made make up wise - will bring you day and night shades that flatter any age! I would suggest a soft Smokey eye and then a highlighter such as high beam from benefit to make your skin glow! I think darker lipsticks can on occasion be aging and dated if not done right. Whilst expensive the naked eye pallette will last you ages! I've had mine for about 4 years and I'm not even half way through!

Lisa Eldridge is in her 40s, have a look at her website. She is totally inspiring, she often looks tired and washed out at the beginning of her videos but it beautiful by the end. Each one has a list of the products used.

Lisa Eldridge x1000.

She's brilliant, knows her stuff (rather than being a teenager who shops a lot) and give proper info.

I like Ruth Crilly on A Model Recommends as well - again a higher quality than the Zoella/Viviana/Lily Pebbles lot.

I bought a great copy for the Urban Decay naked set on Amazon, its a brand Called W7.
It lasts all day and the colours are very neutral and they last all day.

I have my eyelashes dyed, and my eyebrows threaded, which makes me look and feel a bit more 'groomed'. I don't have my eyebrows dyed as I they are naturally quite dark (although the number of white hairs is increasing exponentially).

I really like the Pixi brand, especially for eye shadows.

I also wear mineral makeup, but I have quite oily skin, and I know it doesn't suit a lot of women.

Lisa Eldridge for the win!

I love chunky eye crayons just now. Maybelline do cheap ones so you can have a smudgy - not full on - eyes.

Pusspuss1 · 14/02/2015 16:54

I think go for subtle enhancement of your natural features, not makeup-makeup. Tidy brows and nails, a light foundation or tinted moisturiser, subtle blusher, tinted lip gloss, brown eyeliner, curled lashes and a nice coat of mascara. Highlighter on the cheekbones is good too.

PulpsNotFiction · 14/02/2015 17:02

Lisa Eldridge has cost me a fortune! Her YouTube videos are excellent, it's not all expensive make up either, she does use a variety of stuff,.
Gel or cream eye shadow's are my favourite at the moment, they're really easy to apply and blend (Mac paint pots and bobbi brown cream pots have recently been purchased!).
She did a video for MN at Christmas That's worth a watch, it's on YouTube.

I like Lisa eldritch and Gossmakeupartist. She's my age and he's cool because he puts stuff on his own bearded face, which is funny. He's good for quick tips and cheats.

MassaAttack · 15/02/2015 09:56

ihate thanks for the W7 recommendation. Just trawling through their Amazon listing now - I desperately need to sort my face out. I wear a lot of eyeliner and dark eyeshadow - it's time I varied this a bit.

My friend booked me into MAC for a makeover. It cost £50 but then you got the money back to spend on products. I bought face and body foundation which makes my skin look amazing, so Glowy, and you can add more without it going Cakey. Also Subculture lipliner which is a lovely nude, and Patisserie lipstick which is lovely natural and moisturising. It took half an hour, and she reshape my eyebrows with a pencil which took years off me. She didn't do winged eyeliner, but a dark brown powder very close to the lash line, and some subtle contouring. It was worth every penny, and I went into dryling to check the foundation shade as I know MAC can be on the orangey side, but it was perfect. I'm a convert.

Then, my friend had an appt as Estée lauder- she's older than me so had quite a few wrinkles- they used double wear which seemed drying and settled in her lines, and grey eyeliner which did nothing for her lovely eye colour. To top it off a too strong red lipstick- it was like painting by numbers. My friend ended up wiping it off and putter her own stuff back on. It was free though.

Thanks for the recommendations - I'd not come across Lisa Eldritch before, and she's really good. I like how she starts off bare-faced, too.

So far, I've had my eyebrows waxed, which is helping, and got a bit more diligent with foundation/concealer, lippie and mascara. I think highlighter might be next - I bought a bourjois bronzer, but I'm so pale, I think it makes me look a bit odd... Although I might just be doing it wrong!!

After what you've said, shonajay, I might start saving for a Mac makeup lesson too.

If your very pale op you might find Mac turns you orange!
They can be a bit heavy handed.
How about Bobbi Brown. They offer make up lessons for free.
Very neutral colours.
