I'm going shopping just for me next week and want to choose a new serum or similar. I have been using Clarins Double Concentrate for three months and really like it as it I find it's lovely under my foundation. I'm not sure I'm seeing any actual improvement in my skin though. I am nearly 50 and feel that I need a product which is more refining or exfoliating to liven up my tired complexion. I don't mind paying a similar price to Clarins if it works, but am equally happy to hear about cheaper alternatives that are good. All advice gratetfully received.

Pretty I looked at the dermalogica site. Do you remember which product you used? The spf Crream looks good, definately worth a try. Agree that lots of those creams irritate eyes.

It's all the age smart range, I like the multivitamin power firm but I don't think the moisturiser or 'dynamic skin recovery ' had the plumping effect I wanted and felt a little greasy. I also don't want to sleep in anything spf, it just makes my eyes water.

Thing is everyone's skin reacts differently so it's all worth seeing if it suits you. You can usually buy testers off eBay really cheap. The moisturiser alone is £50 so expensive if it doesnt do what you want.

Retin A is the only preparation that has been scientifically proven to treat wrinkles.
I don't know why anyone would waste money on anything else.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/02/2015 18:36

I buy dermalogica off eBay, you save a fortune.

pinkfrocks · 14/02/2015 20:09

prettywhite I'm really surprised that you want your face tanned to match your arms- you will end up like prune you know! :) The safer option is to use a fake tan for faces, or a darker foundation.

Fabulassie · 14/02/2015 20:11

Agree that Retin A is the only topical thing that actually reduces wrinkles.

Botox is fantastic for the forehead.

For general dryness and dullness, then there are products that help. Olay Regenerist is some good stuff, especially the night Elixir... It's glycolic acid. Acidic exfoliating products are good for that. But they don't erase wrinkles.

pinkfrocks · 14/02/2015 20:14

*OP how is your diet?
Are you eating oily fish, avocados, almonds, brazils, keeping off the booze and coffee etc - and refined carbs? If your skin looks dull it may well need nourishing from the inside.

prettywhiteguitar · 14/02/2015 20:18

No ! I use SPF 20 at weekends I really don't want a dark brown face Smile

That sun block really does work, no sunlight gets through at all so you stay really white. I want some colour on my face so I swap when I know I won't be working that day.

When my dermalogica runs out I might try the retin a. My wrinkles are probably due to dryness and being outside and weathered all year round Sad

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 14/02/2015 22:33

pinkfrocks, my diet is pretty good, a little alcohol only at weekends, lots of veg and fruit. Hate fish but love nuts and avocados. But I do have a very tiring teaching job and by the end of a half term I look haggard. Tbh, I'm not so bothered about wrinkles, it's the recent lack of density and luminosity that bothers me. I am nudging 50 though so probably to be expected.

Never found anything that can come anywhere close to the Nu Skin range www.nuskin.com/

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 15/02/2015 15:54

Thank you for all your comments. The one product I wouldn't change is Liz Earle C+P, and I looked at her (Avon's) website earlier to reorder. There is is a very good offer on her superskin moisturiser at the moment. Has anyone used it and would recommend?

DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/02/2015 16:20

I have used the Superskin concentrate oil, which is lovely. I was also convinced I'd never change from C and P but at the moment have the Elemis one with neroli, cedarwood and bergamot which is bloody lovely and leaves the LE standing!

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 15/02/2015 19:21

I have already placed an order with LE. Last day of this particular offer. I did need more C+P, which I have previously bought in John Lewis stores. Bloody Internet! I was hooked into the promotion and bought C+P, Tonic, super skin moisturiser and serum/oil plus 3 samples.

The liz Earle oil is gorgeous, I love it. The Superskin moisturiser not so much but the new version of that with neroli is one of my faves :)

DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/02/2015 21:14

Anything with neroli is lovely, isn't it? So uplifting!

I'm 52 and everyone guesses me at under 45, sometimes younger.

I use BodyShop aloe vera moisturiser as I have really sensitive skin and it's one product I can use without itching.

Roc under eye cream, been using it for decades.

I don't sunbathe and never have.

When skin feels a bit rough (maybe couple of times a month) I borrow dd's face scrub for her spotty teen skin and do a quick swish round under the shower.

Everything else is down to genes, fat, and the fact that I have no forehead lines and no 11s. Neither of my parents have/had these ... it's just the luck of the draw.

Chiggers · 16/02/2015 08:11

I get mistaken regularly for a 22yo. I've tried all sorts of serums from expensive to cheap one and the expensive ones were a waste of money. I use Differin gel and coconut oil at night and Balance Formulas Hyaluron serum during the day (it's in a turquoise/green dropper bottle from an independent local chemist for about £2.99). I'm 37yo. That serum was the only one that worked for me alongside the Differin Gel for my acne. All the rest (Clarins, Estee Lauder etc) made my face break out even more)

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 18/02/2015 19:49

Still waiting for my LE order to arrive.

There is no cream or potion in a bottle that will work its magic.
The best you can do is block the sun, ditch the booze and the fags and eat well.

It's down to genes, lifestyle and, after 50, hormones. HRT might give you better skin but you wouldn't want to or be prescribed it for that reason!

I've read some much stuff by dermos and they all agree that anything not on a prescription ( face creams) will not help much.

People here who are saying they look young for their age- you'd probably look the same whether you had used creams @£5 a pot or £150.
