hair up or down for a ball?

I'm 36 and average looking and want to look and feel fab for this do. I'll be getting it cut and blow dried (a treat as i have boring straightish brownish hair which just gets a quick trim and no styling ever) or getting a proper hairdresser to put it up....what would be nicest?

What's your dress like?

floor length black, one shoulder strap, kind of grecian. Going to have some big showy accessories to add oomph.

Up I think with one shoulder strap.

I think it depends on what you usually do.

I wear my hair down on a day to day basis so when I want/need to dress up I have it up. My sister wears her up on a day to day so on an evening out she has it down.

How long is your hair? I personally think that most people look best with some hair around their face. Hair that's completely up highlights all your face's flaws whereas a bit of loose hair softens them.

Also, sometimes up styles can look a bit dated and when you've got a show stopper dress and lots of accessories a simple blowdry can look more modern.

If you do have it put up, I'd do a half up, half down style.

I think it also depends on your hair - with the best blow dry in the world, mine looks tatty an hour after. An up do will still look great hours after for me

Up. to show off your shoulders and the single strap feature of the dress, also it will high light earrings if you are wearing them.

ok, so Up seems to be taking the lead. Day to day it's usually pulled back but not piled up, and nowhere near voluptuous tresses piled up on the top of my head. I'm trying to think how i'd like it up, as I'd agree with PP i need some tendrils or the like loose to soften my round face! Been googling up-dos but nothing is quite right...Anyway, thanks for the input!

I agree with half up.
Loose tendrils can look seriously awful, I would strongly advise against those

I def don't want straggly wispy bits...isn't there a more robust version of tendrils?...if i find the right picture i'll post it up.

Have you got layers?

not really, just a layer/feathery bit at the bottom if you know what i mean. But I'm having my hair cut and may well get some more layers. I've got bad hair right now as i have post baby regrowth which is about 3 inches long sticking up from the top of my head; i lost so much hair after DC3 and it's all growing back thank goodness, but it makes my hair look very frizzy.

Have you got a fringe or swept fringe? I'd have it up if you have nice earrings and make up, I am very jealous
